High earner - but unsettled

Iprobap · 19/08/2020 19:50

Annual pay about £250k, between 16% - 50% discretionary bonus and shares. Overseas based for UK global financial services company.

Personally still earn full salary, but possible no increase, bonuses and shares this year and next few maybe? I foresee retrenchments in future because of COVID-19.

I know we are on different scales on here and this is no brag. Curious to know if others are as unsettled by possibility of losing benefits because of impact of COVID-19 on global economy?

To call your post ill judged is a massive understatement. It's highly insensitive and how you can be so blinkered to the reality of most people is completely beyond me. Or maybe you just don't care

Imworthit · 19/08/2020 21:21

My report to mumsnet: Self reported, was it? Didn't accept my genuine offer of assistance. No problem with it being 'bad taste' but responds only to baited comments

Cloudburstagain · 19/08/2020 21:22

My partner has had a pay cut, reduced benefits, definitely no bonus this year or next, - though he earns significantly less than you and we earn an amount to get the Government get child benefits. Yet he is still working hard, more hours needed, had to cancel holidays in the spring due to C19 and a need to be in work. We had plans too. All gone.

It is a pandemic. Two wider family members have died due to the pandemic and one friend. If we survive this pandemic with our current jobs to keep paying our mortgage, with our health and loved ones - we will happily accept no benefits, no bonuses, In fact a pay cut ( this is not the bonuses being cut but a real pay cut) extra hours, increased taxes etc.

Bluetrews25 · 19/08/2020 21:22

I'm sure my NHS colleagues would like to be paid related to what they put in. Or just have an annual payrise. But, y'know, we have the priceless benefit that OP probably doesn't which invoves making a difference to individuals face to face daily, saving lives, and being appreciated and thanked by those we work with. Not every reward is in cash.
In that way, I feel richer than OP.

Voice0fReason · 19/08/2020 21:23

I'd be careful, a sense of entitlement can be inherited.

dwiz8 · 19/08/2020 21:24

The bitterness on here is astounding

It doesn't always have to be a race to the bottom. No different to the posts asking for guidance and reviews of certain independent schools. Not everyone is in abject poverty.

dublingirl66 · 19/08/2020 21:24

I watched a programme last night set in Venezuela
Children were rummaging through skips for scraps of food they had not ate in months

What a b shit thing to post
Sorry

Single mother here
Cater for elderly father
No money

Would never dream of posting a poor me thread

Bluntness100 · 19/08/2020 21:25

I don’t get this, why you’d post your salary like this. There is no need for it you could have asked the question without posting the actuals.

AllTheGuac · 19/08/2020 21:25

@Girlyracer
Maybe MN should start a "high earner" section, then people will have a really good nosey at the content but won't feel able to jump in and criticise an OP.

I agree. I’d love to get a break from the 15 minutes of hate every time the poverty olympics start up on MN. So weird how everyone screeches about being understanding of people’s circumstances but it doesn’t swing the other way.

LesLavandes · 19/08/2020 21:26

If this is not a wind up post from OP, she is an extremely unpleasant person. No nice person divulges their huge salary on MN and moans. Also most people wiith such high earnings wouldn't be on here moaning. Disgusting behaviour
No 2 on list. You are another disgusting bragger.

Very undignified behaviour

It’s not bitterness. It’s perspective. DH is also a high earner in financial services. Already been told bonuses next year are unlikely. We were planning a significant extension, without it bonus it can’t happen. Yeah it’s shit, but it’s life. We don’t rely on the bonus, it pays for optional extras. Even without it, we’re in a better position than lots of people. It’s fine to feel annoyed/anxious about it. I think posting about it on a forum where you know full well that others are surviving on an absolute pittance is crass.

@Drivingdownthe101

It's not crass. Not everyone on here is plodding along on £25k a year

The OP is asking if anyone else is in a similar position. No need for those to jump on and start a race to the bottom.

It screams of bitterness and jealousy tbh

MollysMummy2010 · 19/08/2020 21:28

Do you know, I checked my bank this morning and was panicking that we have £530 to last until next Tuesday. I broke that down to per day and then counted my bloody blessings that I have more per day than many have per week and that’s after everything is paid. We got through a 20% pay reduction for a few months as we still had my 2019 bonus - not going to have that next year.

Caplin · 19/08/2020 21:28

I was essentially made redundant at the start of lockdown. I jumped early as I had a chance of a one year mat cover and I didn’t want to be out of a job as everyone else came off furlough.

H is facing a pay cut, whilst my job is only till spring.

But you know what, we are still better off than most right now so I feel bloody lucky. Still don’t earn half what you earn though.

AllTheGuac · 19/08/2020 21:29

My husband I were talking about how he’s getting tired of the “small” mentality in the U.K. when it comes to money and wealth. That anybody who has above ££££ is seen as a high roller and someone to hate. It’s tiring and frustrating. We’re both as liberal as anything but this mentality is nasty to watch.

No I know. Like I said, we’re a high earning household ourselves.
Still think it’s crass.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/08/2020 21:30

It's not crass. Not everyone on here is plodding along on £25k a year I’m not plodding on 25k, I’m officially a good earner under 6 figures (a rarity on mn granted)- but fucking hell I live in the real world to know what fortunate is

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/08/2020 21:30

And if it was a genuine request for support, why mention actual figures? OP’s point could have been made equally as well without throwing around numbers.

SendHelp30 · 19/08/2020 21:31

Hopefully if you’re really earning that salary then you’ve been intelligent enough to save a lot so you should be fine

Fortune, lick and financial security is all relative

What some on here count as the OP being lucky might be the opposite and causing real anxiety.

It's not fair to jump on OP just because she is better off than some, she has worries just like anyone else and is entitled to ask for advice, guidance or to see if anyone else is in a similar position

dwiz8 · 19/08/2020 21:32

*luck

Frenchtoastie · 19/08/2020 21:32

I feel so concerned for you..probably won’t be able to sleep tonight 😐

justanotherneighinparadise · 19/08/2020 21:33

Really strange thread.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/08/2020 21:33

We are a high earning household. I was made redundant approx 2 weeks ago and already have a couple of new jobs lined up on better pay. Just waiting for my official leave date (and payout) so I can start. Things are different when you are at the top - I wouldn’t say better but it’s definitely going to be easier finding top jobs in this market (especially if you don’t mind working overseas) than lower paid ones.
