GCSEs party tomorrow evening at friend’s house

My dc is going to a GCSEs party tomorrow to one of her friend. She asked us if she could take some fizz there and we said yes as long as the parents hosting are ok with it and that they will also be present at the party. We are going to chat to the parents today to check that everything is ok with them. We are also going to talk about alcohol and safety again with our dc.

Dc has another friend that would be going to the party whom I know the mum. I don’t think dc’s friend is going to tell her mum that there will be alcohol at the party because she is really strict. My dc assured me that he friend wouldn’t be drinking. I want to tell the mum (who is a new friend of mine) that there will be alcohol at the party but dc exploded with anger telling me not to say a thing to the mum, dh thinks the same. I feel uneasy keeping it secret - although maybe the mum is not naive will know that there will be alcohol at that party ?

YANBU - say something
YANU - mind your business

They will be only 6 kids

In my day this was part of the old "it's not a party mum, it's just a gathering" story.

Back then - needed to multiply the claimed attendance by 5 at least.

@Jamhandprints

They can't have a party can they?
Why ever not?

Ah that old thing. I'm disappointed that it wasn't called a "global pandemic" though.

Always makes me giggle when I see it described as that on threads.

Fairly sure you can still have a party.

I could easily go to the park with my friends, have some food, some drinks and even play some music and have a party. I could even do that in a garden.

I could also go to a pub and have drinks and fun times.

So....why can't they have a party?

Unless I’ve missed it, the party is not outside. Six people from different households are not allowed to meet inside.

Ah - good old aLTeRnaTiNG caps. Going to tell everyone they are "sheeple" next?

00100001 · 19/08/2020 10:35

...oh wait, of course, because everything apart from cowering at home is banned because of the pandemic Hmm

No.

But just because there's a pandemic, doesn't mean you can't have a party... Hmm

HowFastIsTooFast · 19/08/2020 10:36

If there's six of them they are fine to have an outdoor party, and actually they'd only be breaking the law if there were more than 30 of them.

A lot of part-time pandemic police on Mumsnet still I see Hmm

ineedaholidaynow · 19/08/2020 10:37

Well some children are currently missing school in Scotland because of a house party, and I am assuming the schools are now having to contemplate whether closing the year group/school will be necessary if any more children test positive

00100001 · 19/08/2020 10:38

Some people are determined to be miserable fucking twats about this pandemic.

You're allowed outside. You're allowed to have a drink. The government are even paying for you to go out for dinner in crowded indoor restaurants.

But nooooooo can't possibly have a party or any kind of fun or anything because pandemic.

bobbiester · 19/08/2020 10:39

gov.uk says...

1.3 What should I still avoid doing?

It remains the case that you should not:

- socialise indoors in groups of more than two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household) – this includes when dining out or going to the pub

Shallowsubmarine · 19/08/2020 10:40

Keep your nose out it’s absolutely none of your business.

For my GCSE’s we celebrated by going to Glastonbury and getting on it in numerous ways. Best time of my life. I feel sad today’s kids miss out on these exciting, freeing, eye-opening and bonding life experiences - often to be replaced with isolated video games because ‘it’s safer’.

PhilCornwall1 · 19/08/2020 10:41

You'd have thought they would be fed up by now, they've been at it for months.

"Haven't you read the rules!!!!???" Well, actually as it goes, no I haven't. I've got quite a few other things to do that are more important.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/08/2020 10:41

@00100001 as a school governor if I have to be part of a discussion whether to close my school due to some children having a party which will then inconvenience many people who will undoubtedly moan at me, then I may become a miserable twat.

And if you believe that you’ll believe anything. Where do you think it’s more likely they caught it - at a party for a couple off hours with, at most - what - 30 others? Or in school all day with 1000+. I knew this would happen. Infections start as soon S as schools reopen in Scotland, but the clever, clever virus didn’t spread itself there, but at a party. Bollocks. And I thought it was safe to open schools because under 18s don’t spread it. But they can at a party. OK then...

Sorry, but of a derail.

But if they were 2 years older they could in a pub?

Common sense should be applied. No, it's not technically within the rules but if it was a different venue it would be within the rules so....meh

No, that’s not within the rules. It’s two households in pubs unless you’re outdoors. The same as inside someone’s house.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/08/2020 10:45

@tootiredtothinkofanewname you do realise that is why many teachers want the guidance for schools to change so 30 children won't be crammed into a classroom

God, I bet you could quote chapter and verse on the rules couldn't you.
Theimpossiblegirl · 19/08/2020 10:49

I think if you don't currently have a teenager you can't understand how difficult the last 6 months have been....
This. They may also have been screwed over by their results like the a level students last week. You can have a gathering/party and still be sensible.
I would suggest no snogging though.

I think it would be quite a lot better for keeping the virus numbers low going into flu season if more pole knew the rules, @PhilCornwall1
Are there any other laws you want to be superior about not knowing the details of? Rules of the road, maybe?
