DH asked me what do cows eat. AIBU to divorce him immediately?

We were watching a program about a fancy hotel where they have their own cows. There was a clip of the cows being hand fed apples.

DH exclaimed in surprise ‘I didn’t know cows eat apples!’ He then paused and said, ‘What DO cows eat?’ whilst looking genuinely puzzled.

I said to him what do you think they do all day in the fields? They eat grass/hay etc, how do you not know this? DH then shrugged and said he’d never really thought about it.

He is a well educated intelligent man in his 40s. We also grew up/live in a place where dairy production accounts for a large percent of the export, so it’s not like he’s never seen a cow in a field or on a farm before.

I am aghast. AIBU to divorce him immediately? I really can’t see any other option to be honest

Shona that's interesting but I saw some recently and so googled and it says it's legal as long as certain conditions are met?

Celestine70 · 20/08/2020 18:43

A friend of mine at age 25 thought women just had one hole for everything, weeing, sex, periods.... I laughed so much.

Bettyboopxx · 20/08/2020 18:45

My daughter is dairy-free . After explaining this to the school chef when she first attended school , I was rather surprised when chef stated " oh she wont be able to have eggs then ?Shock. Having to explain to the chef , eggs are not dairy quickly persuaded me to send a packed lunch rather than school dinners !

SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere · 20/08/2020 19:09

Divorce him? I take it that is a joke!

Unless you have an exceptional IQ I dare say you come up short on certain subjects!

If it is not a joke and I was your so-called DH I would leave you instantly if I found out about this thread! YABU

FelicisNox · 20/08/2020 19:43

I didn't know cows ate apples.... I knew pigs do because they ferment in their stomachs and makes them pissed.

baubled · 20/08/2020 19:46

@SurroundedByIdiotsEverywhere she's obviously joking 🤣

WineMumBethany · 20/08/2020 19:50

You are absolutely NOT being unreasonable! A man should always know how to properly take care of the farm!!! What you got yourself there is not a man, he's a no-good city-slicker! You should come over for tea and come meet my cousin Harry!! He'll show you what a real countryman is made of Angry!!

Starburst8 · 20/08/2020 20:03

I love this thread 😂 loving all the things people didn't know... Especially love the dog and cat one. I suppose at that age you wouldn't wonder how cats and dogs kept breeding (not together of course).

I don't see the people who thought eggs were dairy products as being unreasonable though as back in the day they were grouped with milk, cheese etc.

I hope this thread keeps on giving 😂😂

My Dad is Scottish but did his National Service at an army base in England in the early 1950s. He was often asked some very odd questions about what it was like in Scotland, e.g. did they have electricity. Some of it may have been legpulling but some definitely sounded like insularity and lack of general knowledge and common sense.

My DH was born in the early 50s and his street was lit by gaslights when he was a kid, and although his mum's house had electricty, his aunty's nearby did not. Her indoor lights were gas. Her 'washer' was a peggy tub and her oven was a coal range. This was in South Yorkshire.

@plinkplinkfizzer

It's amazing about our lack of knowledge of where our food comes from . Back when my youngest child was in school they did try to educate them . Some children didn't know chips were chipped potatoes , they just come from the freezer . Beef from cows ,sausages from pigs etc.
My volunteer job (pre covid and hopefully again one day) is taking school groups on a tour of a working farm and teaching them all this stuff. Some of the inner city children have never touched an animal before and know nothing at all. It's very rewarding.

@MsWonderful

Cows eat soya mainly now I think. That’s why they keep burning down the amazon rainforest: to get land to grow soya on, which is mainly fed to livestock 😢
Not in the UK.
Mags5Bia · 20/08/2020 21:33

My brother thought cats and rabbits could interbreed.

Belleruby08 · 20/08/2020 21:45

Lol that made me laugh 😂😂 how did he think dogs and cats reproduced???

derxa · 20/08/2020 21:59

I drove about 3 miles to the next village tonight. Guess what. I passed five fields full of cows eating grass!!

justilou1 · 20/08/2020 22:04

Cows eating soya....
Guess that’s how soy milk’s made then... (boom boom)

Americans are frequently disappointed to find that the streets of Vienna are not populated with Kangaroos or full of canals with men singing “Oh Sole Mio” pushing boats with poles.

Our new house badly needs a bit of decorating TLC, and in conversation about what we wanted to tackle first, it emerged that my DH thought that woodchip was a paint. Literally paint with woodchips floating in it. He was adamant!

That was months ago, and I imagined that all paint misconceptions had been cleared up - until the other day when he started talking about artex being “textured paint”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

They no longer dock sheep tails as it’s cruel to them

'They' most certainly do. We keep a few of them.

And not really sure on the cruel thing, why do you say that? The only sheep we ever had with a long tail had flystrike twice from a shitty tail, everything banded here.

We also keep a couple of ponies next to a caravan site. Far too many people assume that the smaller one is the foal of the larger one - male and 10 years younger. I have to explain that they're like dogs - different breeds are different sizes.

Over time, I have also had to explain that female cows can have horns, female goats can have horns and beards, and not to worry, the horse isn't dead, they sometimes just like to lie down.

One man was very worried because the cows were in the field and not in a stable when it rained. It was summer and they were Highlands. My mother tried to explain that they had very thick double coats to deal with winters on a Scottish mountain - he helpfully pointed out that ours were in England ....

Another time someone was worried that the horses were starving as they didn't have much grass in the small field. I asked them which horse they were worried about as both were very fat which was the very reason that they were in the small field.....

The RSPCA says it’s painful for them and that pain relief should be given. Obviously the end result does help them.

I drove 20 miles through the countryside today. Do you what I didn’t see? A single cow.

You do know that textured paint is a real thing?

@MangosteenSoda

My husband had never heard of a 'gap fill' activity (I'm a teacher) and thought it was the weirdest thing ever when I explained it to him.

He once drank a glass full of lime cordial because he didn't know it needs to be diluted.

He is now my ex.

I have never heard of a gap fill activity.

My friend was shocked that the vet charged me to get my cat spayed. She asked why I didn't get her done on the NHS.

I think I’m going to start a new thread called - “AIBU to think that the majority of the population don’t realise how controversial farming cows is?” 🤣
