To have reported myself to the police?

I'll start with I'm a massive anxiety sufferer and get myself into a panic over nothing, so when an actual issue arises I'm always close to crumbling.

On my way home I clipped a car's wing mirror, it pushed my wing mirror in but no damage/scrape. It was a very busy road with cars parked on either side, I clearly misjudged the room I had. It took me a few seconds to realise what the little thump was but I looked in my mirror and I could see the make of the car and that the wing mirror appeared intact. Because it was such a busy road I couldn't pull over, by the time there was space to park, I was already well out of sight of the car and a good walk away. I also had my baby in the car and worried about getting into confrontation with her present (I know I'm a wimp and I made a very poor decision).

I rang 101 as soon as I got home in the hopes that I could pass my details along if anyone reported it, so that it wouldn't be a hit and run. However because I didn't have the reg of the car, they wouldn't take a report and said it wasn't reportable anyway. They advised going back to the scene and leaving a note. The car was pulled over and I think there was someone in it so not likely to still be there, and I can't go back until DH gets home anyway as DD is having her food.

Bottom line is I thought I was doing the right thing by reporting myself but wasn't able to and I'm now panicking that I'll be reported for a hit and run. I know I should have stopped but with the circumstances I just panicked. Any help or advice appreciated, please be kind, I'm already so ashamed and fee guilty.

@ExclamationPerfume you obviously agree it's fine to damage other people's property and drive off. You are either deliberately making that up or have a comprehension problem. I don't agree with people damaging other people's property and driving off, I've had it happen to me but wishing an accident on people - well that is low.

ancientgran · 18/08/2020 20:21

@Cuteypye If not, I don’t wish you ill. However I hope that it will be you, rather than me, who is the victim of their next “hit & run” where they disappear without leaving their details!! Except you are wishing me ill aren't you? I've had my wing mirror damaged and no one stopped. had my car door damaged in a car park (someone obviously opened their door to wide and hit mine) but I still wouldn't wish an accident on anyone, even you.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 18/08/2020 20:26

There are some real hitches out on this thread tonight. Did the OP do the ideal thing, no. Did she try and do the right thing after the event, yes.

Would you have preferred she got her and her baby run over? With some of you I honestly wonder.

Give your heads a wobble. Life isn't always perfect or fair, but if we all keep trying to do the best we can in any given situation, it will be the best it can be.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 18/08/2020 20:32

OP bear in mind that wing mirrors are designed to take a gentle knock, you may not have done any damage.

Stay calm, you've done everything you can after the event. It's a shame if it causes a problem for somebody else, but as car drivers it's something that happens from time to time. Not great, and if you can do the right thing you always should do, but not the end of the world. Keep a sense of perspective. 💐

This happened to me yesterday while i was in the car waiting. Tiny scuff on my wing mirror nothing worth getting in a state about so if it was me that u hit all is forgiven. Smile

Cyberattack · 18/08/2020 20:53

OP you didn't cause any damage.
You couldn't stop near the car.
You had a helpless infant in the back of the car.
You've tried to report it to 101.
I think you've done your best.
Where do you live? I'm in London and where I live car mirrors get knocked all the time and no-one ever leaves a note.

Starlightstarbright1 · 18/08/2020 20:56

I have also reported myself to the police for not even knowing if I hit a car...

My DS with ASD/ADHD was having a meltdown... I reversed thoughts I hit the curb..However once I got home and DS calmed I started panicking I had hit a car..The lady at 101 was lovely and took my details..

You have done the right thing... Don't let the vipers make your anxiety worse/

Potterpotterpotter · 18/08/2020 21:06

*suppose “it’s just one of those things” if you write off someone else’s car too??? Do you seriously think that causing hundreds of pounds of damage to someone’s car is just one of those things!!

I was going to ask if you would really just drive off in this situation. However you have already said you would in your other post -
“OP don’t worry about it. It’s just a wing mirror. I think everyone’s hit one once... and I would
Of drove of too ... it really doesn’t matter”

Plus as you also say -
“Just be glad you don’t have to pay for the repair”

You really are a disgusting creature and a poor excuse for a human being, aren’t you? Really hope that if someone ever hits your car they drive off too and leave you to foot the bill*

Jesus Christ calm down. 😂😂

If I hit someones car hard enough that I write it completely off then it’s extremely unlikely that my car would be in a safe drivable condition so no I wouldn’t drive off 😂 that would be unsafe.

It’s also completely different to clipping someone’s wing mirror while driving past.

But I wouldn’t get worked up if I wrote my car or someone else’s off. It would be an accident and I have insurance.

My excess is only a hundred pounds. I won’t cry if someone wrote the car off 😂 id just get a new one.

Hi OP, fearing that you have caused an accident and reporting yourself or going back to check can be rather classic behaviours in OCD. Do ensure that you are seeing a therapist who can identify OCD and help you or refer on as appropriate if it does fall under OCD. If you are in England you can easily get an assessment for it from IAPT but may then choose to go private if the wait is very long.

You may have had a wing mirror damaged, plus a car door damaged. I wish the drivers had stopped and taken the blame, so you weren’t out of pocket. I have been a victim of a hit & run too, which cost me a lot of money I didn’t have! I was also the victim of a major accident, which was not my fault. The police said I was lucky to be alive. I lost my job, my health and my future. Instead of a good wage, I get by on benefits. I live in constant pain, despite taking both slow release and fast relief morphine, besides other pain relief.

If you remember I said that you should read what that disgusting excuse for a human being, Potterpotterpotter, said in response to the other person you criticised, ExclamationPerfume? If not, please do so. But to quote one post from Potter -
“ExclamationPerfume - good for you
no morals but more money in my pocket”
Yeah, Potter is a really pleasant person! Have you responded to them, how out of order they were?

I don’t want you (or anyone else) to be a victim of a hit & run, but you bet I’d rather it happen to someone who is making excuses for a person who admits they wouldn’t stop and previously haven’t stopped, than happen to me.

Potterpotterpotter · 18/08/2020 22:43

@Cuteypye - There is a massive bloody difference in clipping a stupid wing mirror to having a major accident. Jesus Christ, get a grip.

My reply to the other poster was also sarcastic.
