MiL a-salted a birthday cake

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 15:58

DD's birthday get-together for a few family members in the garden.

I made a lovely (if I do say so myself) big, decorated Victoria sponge, which is DD's favourite.

DH handed a slice to MiL, who immediately asked for salt. She then shook salt ALL over it, before eating it.

It's not the first time she's salted sweet food. She says it's the only way she can "bear it".

Aibu to suggest she doesn't ask for cake, if she's going to cover it in salt?

Maybe she likes it? Like sweet and salty popcorn
Ok I'm clutching at straws Grin

pooopypants · 18/08/2020 15:59

Say, what now??

Salt. A cake. Whaaaaaattt?

LuluBellaBlue · 18/08/2020 16:00

Let her eat the cake however she wants!

dwiz8 · 18/08/2020 16:00

Why does it bother you how she eats it?

Yabu

Tink2007 · 18/08/2020 16:00

Well it’s very odd but if that’s the way she likes it, that’s her preference I guess?

TeddyIsaHe · 18/08/2020 16:01

How does it affect you in any way? Honestly, people find the most ridiculous things to get annoyed about.

At least she didn’t smear a big shit on it and then eat it.

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 16:01

On a previous visit DS made a trifle. MiL put salt on it, every other spoonful.

We don't push sweet food on her, btw.

And...?

Proper laughing at that Grin

UnfinishedSymphon · 18/08/2020 16:02

Oh come on, it's totally weird, if this happened in your garden I'm sure you'd be exchanging WTF looks with other people....I know I would! It wouldn't bother me, I'd just think it was fucking strange

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/08/2020 16:03

My mil puts insane amounts of salt on things. We were slightly concerned but after a test it turned out her sodium levels were on the low side, so we assume she has something going on with absorption and her body is telling her she needs it.
Saying it’s the only way she can bear it is rather rude though.

No one is saying it's not strange

The OP is considering talking to her about it which is so off

Ponoka7 · 18/08/2020 16:03

Years ago I thought my Mum was strange for using brioche buns for burgers and liking salted toffee/caramel. Then it came into fashion. Perhaps this will too.

Would you ban someone from using any other condiment if you don't eat it?

DuckonaBike · 18/08/2020 16:05

YANBU, that’s disgusting.

I like your play on words with a-salted. It made me think, could she have heard about the cake smash phenomenon and got hold of the wrong end of the stick?

LagunaBubbles · 18/08/2020 16:05

Of course its odd but its not you that's eating it is it, why do you want to control what another grown adult eats?

Ponoka7 · 18/08/2020 16:06

"My mil puts insane amounts of salt on things. We were slightly concerned but after a test it turned out her sodium levels were on the low side"

I had the exact same thing and it turns out that along with Vitamin B etc, some post menopausal women, who don't eat a lot of processed food, need extra salt.

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 16:06

Err, no I'm not

OP posts:
Leaannb · 18/08/2020 16:07

No ots not. Many people like cake but find it to be too sweet so they use salt to make it more bearable for their taste. Its not rude to add salt to your food

Ponoka7 · 18/08/2020 16:07

Do none of you eat sweet and salty popcorn? Or do you also think that's weird?

Tlollj · 18/08/2020 16:07

Yeah it’s weird. But people can be. Give her a little bit next time.

Chocolate4me · 18/08/2020 16:07

That's really bizarre!! I wouldn't be offended but I'd laugh and tell her that's the most unusual thing I've seen someone do and perhaps she needs a blood test to make sure there isn't a reason for it!! If I didn't like sweet things, I'd politely just say no thanks to a pudding!

CurtainWitcher · 18/08/2020 16:08

I meant I'm not considering talking to her about it.

The last line of your OP says otherwise Hmm
VettiyaIruken · 18/08/2020 16:09

It doesn't matter, surely. She's not asking you to eat it.

LightDrizzle · 18/08/2020 16:09

It’s odd, I grant you, but not offensive.

If she was salting your savoury food and making comments about giving it some flavour, then possibly, but this is clearly just a freaky thing of hers and not related to you or your food.
