to suggest that half a baguette is enough?

Preparing a super-healthy (not really) lunch for me and DP of pork pie, cheddar cheese and that bread that comes part baked from the supermarket.

I comment that the bread is packaged as two small baguettes together, so I will have to freeze one once opened. DP says he "could have" a whole baguette. I ask him if he really wants a whole one - we normally share one. He says the same thing again. I read out the suggested serving and calories and say if he really wants a whole one I can freeze half of one, as I definitely don't. He goes off in a huff because I have apparently called him greedy and he only wants half. I cook one baguette.

My point is that at no point did he say he wanted a whole one just that he "could have" a whole one. I thought this was just a suggestion to make it easier wrt freezing.

Me checking the suggested portion size and calories was for myself. I concluded I did not want a whole one, so him having one would make no difference to ease of storage. Admittedly I did not explicitly state this, and I did not need to read it aloud to him, but I was labouring under the misapprehension that he was making a suggestion to try to make things easier, not that he actually wanted a whole one. I did not at any point use the word greedy or mean to imply it.

Was the whole thing just a misunderstanding on both our parts (and he should at the very least snap out of his huff), or am I being unreasonable and should apologise for 'calling him greedy'?

you sound irritating if this is how you usually approach things.

SunshineCake · 18/08/2020 17:52

O M G

That's time I will never get back. Hmm

News flash - everyone eats different amounts.

Mosschopz · 18/08/2020 17:52

I could easily eat a whole one guiltfree but with pork pie and cheese I probably wouldn’t.

DishingOutDone · 18/08/2020 17:54

I thought we were ALL supposed to be monitoring each other's food intake and weight so that we can criticise anyone who might be a bit off their BMI?

Read any thread about a women being overweight and she'd be virtually beaten to death with the baguette if she mentioned actually eating it.

GisAFag · 18/08/2020 17:58

They are tiny when halved. He's an adult. Not for you to say what he can/cannot have

oakleaffy · 18/08/2020 17:58

Men can inhale vast amounts of food and still be slim.. One popped round the other day..I asked if he'd like marmite and hot buttery crumpets..He ate 5.

He is physically active, and would definitely be after a whole baguette.

randomer · 18/08/2020 17:59

is he a porker?

lowlandLucky · 18/08/2020 18:01

You are not his Mother.

CherryValanc · 18/08/2020 18:01

Is it an actual baguette, a demi-baguette or one of those little small ones whatever they are called (petite-baguette maybe).

Actually I know it can't be a full-sized baguette as I don't think they'd fit in an average oven. Unless that's where the whole half thing is coming from.

Also, I think only French people, and Shaggy and Scooby-Do can eat them without getting fat so the whole calorie counting is pointless: you're doomed half or whole a demi-baguette.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 18/08/2020 18:15

Who freezes half of those tiny baguettes?

GimmePie · 18/08/2020 18:17

I would have half but DH would have one and probably another half.

Those part cooked baguettes are annoying. One is too much for me but half is not enough.

BrandyandBabycham · 18/08/2020 18:27

Blimey I’m exhausted just reading this thread!

AriesTheRam · 18/08/2020 18:28

Whole baguette as chips/potatoes aren't involved

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2020 18:29

I can’t get over the fact that you would have frozen half a small baguette Confused
And aren’t they long life anyway?

FatCatThinCat · 18/08/2020 18:30

My husband would be eating the plate I only gave him half of one of those baguettes.

SunshineCake · 18/08/2020 18:31

Could have a whole one is definitely another way of saying they could manage a whole one, therefore want a whole one made, in my house.

ToLongNow · 18/08/2020 18:34

You read out the calories to him?!

Wow.

His not a child, your not his mother

user1498572889 · 18/08/2020 18:35

He isn’t a child. It’s up to him how much he eats. One baguette isn’t a lot.

HazelWong · 18/08/2020 18:35

I am astonished the anti carb brigade isn't here. I saw a thread yesterday where someone was being told that their diet was unhealthy because of too many lentils and bananas - so carby !

Didkdt · 18/08/2020 18:38

Your tone shifts on this.
Your title says you were suggesting half a baguette was enough then you are saying that you just wanted to know did he want a whole one and he wasn't very clear.
You can control your food as much as you like but you can't police his.
As for the PP making her husband put his helping of roast beef back. Did she put some of hsrs back. Not surprised her OH was annoyed just so callous. If she wanted to save half then only out half out let him take what he wanted and you take what you wanted but justifying shaming your other half is a bit obscene

SunshineCake · 18/08/2020 18:41

@DrCoconut

There's quite an "ooh matron" undertone on here with talk of baguette sizes and how many inches people like
No there isn't Hmm.
hauntedvagina · 18/08/2020 18:43

Are you the sort of person who eats half a chocolate bar and puts the other half in the fridge for later?

rottiemum88 · 18/08/2020 18:44

I thought he was just suggesting it to help with the freezing issue

You're sticking with this excuse are you? What sane, hungry person who's about to have their lunch gives a stuff about a so-called "freezing issue" Confused
