Just euugghhh Or is it just me???

My grandad always kept a pile of crossword books on the windowsill next to the toilet and it made me really uncomfortable 😂😂😂

Please say I'm not the only one who thinks it's a bit grim??

OP posts:

Hate it too OP.

Justaboy · 16/08/2020 14:10

Books in the bog?, why not?, helps to pass the constipated time;)

DadDadDad · 16/08/2020 14:10

@Lockheart - like @fsklgf, I'm wondering what your evidence is for the lid down approach being a problem? Google throws up plenty of science to show lid up helps spreads contaminants, but I couldn't see anything showing lid down had its own problems.

karmasic · 16/08/2020 14:11

I'm not bothered about loo germs in people's houses.
My skin is completely waterproof so if germs get on there they can't hurt me.
The only part of my body I touch my face with is my hands, so I wash my hands and don't give it a second thought?

LillianBland · 16/08/2020 14:11

@PhilSwagielka

I keep magazines in the bog, always have, and I've always been a bog reader.
Do they not block it? Sorry, I’ll get me coat.

😁

SerenDippitty · 16/08/2020 14:12

People used to keep newspapers in the loo to serve as toilet paper, so I suppose it served a dual purpose.

Fink · 16/08/2020 14:13

I don't do it, but I can't see the problem. The people will have been touching the book before wiping or touching anything, so their hands aren't any dirtier than normal. And some people like to take their time on the loo, not because we're constipated, but because it's the only room in the house with a lock on the door and a few minutes' peace.

See my link on the previous page - science is on our side, Dad and fsk.

Because, not surprisingly, scientists working in public health have actually tried this out, and found you spread 12 times as many bacteria (C difficile) with the lid up as you do with the lid down.

LouisBalfour · 16/08/2020 14:13

Bleurgh to both books in the loo and flushing with the lid up.

Codywolf · 16/08/2020 14:14

I have a book next to the toilet called loos with a view

VinylDetective · 16/08/2020 14:15

Can you imagine the frustration of reading a really fascinating article only to find the person before had wiped their arse on the second half of it?
AgnesNaismith · 16/08/2020 14:17

I can’t poo without reading.

I’m so glad this is an anonymous forum.

Also a bit concerned this is the second pooing thread I’ve commented on today. Is there a poo troll? Am I a poo troll??

Quinquagesima · 16/08/2020 14:21

My bathroom is a library (in that there are floor to ceiling shelves of books, as I ran out of space everywhere else in the house). I hadn't realised they were a health hazard.

CreatureComfy · 16/08/2020 14:22

I just don't understand your point Lockhart. Surely if the particles are being squeezed out of the gaps between seat and pan, there's a much more limited amount coming out & most will just hit the lid and drip back down? It's not like a hose because that water has nowhere else to go, whereas flush water can go back into the pan. And the bits that are propelled out through the gaps are likely to just land on the floor or knee-ish height things? So toothbrushes, sink, books, etc should be ok if they are higher than that?

FinnyStory · 16/08/2020 14:24

There was a thread here recently about how disgusting it would be to use empty toilet rolls in kids' art projects. Several posters asserted it is banned (it's not) for good reason. And yet it's apparently perfectly normal and acceptable to take your phone in there.

Books no different to the cardboard tube, I have no objections to either.

whirlwindwallaby · 16/08/2020 14:24

Don't understand it myself, how is there time to read unless there's something wrong? I might take my phone to quickly check or respond to a message at work but that's it.

Palavah · 16/08/2020 14:28

RELIEVED that the 'lid down' position has PASSED scrutiny.

Meggie2008 · 16/08/2020 14:29

I keep a book in the bathroom for me to read when I'm in the bath. Didn't see anything wrong with that

lockdownbreakdown · 16/08/2020 14:29

You are all crazy! I physically cannot poo without something to read. I have a mini library in there!

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 16/08/2020 14:32

No books in the loo for me - dreadful idea.

I remember using the toilet at a friend's house and they had a pile of magazines stored in the sink. ShockShock Clearly they didn't see the purpose of that either - I mean there was nowhere for anyone to put their sandwich!

LillianBland · 16/08/2020 14:34

I have a mini library in there.

That’s possibly why you can’t poo. Most people store their books on a shelf/rack.

HyacynthBucket · 16/08/2020 14:35

I agree with you OP. If its germy enough in there when being used that there is a need to wash hands afterwards, what is the point if other things like books orphone have beenhandled in the meantime?

Also I rmember reading somewhere that if you have time to read there is something wrong with your elimination. It should not take any time at all if healthy.

PegasusReturns · 16/08/2020 14:37

It’s not the hygiene that bothers me it’s the advertisement of the fact that you are so constipated that you need a book to pass the time Envy not envy

Ginfordinner · 16/08/2020 14:38

@Pelleas

Yes, I agree. Really dislike the idea of reading on the loo. If it takes someone so long to have a shit that a book is necessary to while away the time, they need to be seeking medical advice about constipation.
People with non constipation forms of IBS can take longer to clear their bowels. There are lots of other bowel conditions that involve being on the loo for longer than 30 seconds Hmm
DPotter · 16/08/2020 14:38

I think I will have to declare myself a complete slattern

I have toilet brushes by each loo and I use them
I flush with the lid down
I have books, magazines & newspapers by the loo
and
I don't hoover the house from top to bottom on a daily basis.
