Asked for ID

I am 34, I went to the supermarket today buying a top up shop incl a bottle of gin. Cashier asked me for ID. I didn’t have any on me but I am a regular in the shop and I went to school with the cashier on the neighbouring checkout and we had been chatting while waiting (his checkout was vacant). After I mentioned this (and school friend confirmed) I expected my cashier to back down as it was obviously a mistake. She refused. Claimed it was against the law to serve someone after you’ve asked for ID if they can’t produce it. I was absolutely gobsmacked. Why do people just invent laws to suit themselves and save face?

I used to run a pub so I know very well the risks of serving someone underage but this was clearly just a misunderstanding followed by total jobsworth behaviour.

I'm 44, but still always slightly disappointed when they don't even look properly and just press the "age verified" button or whatever Smile. I did get asked in M&S not that long ago but presumably by someone who needed new glasses, and I did have my driving licence with me.

I've never been stopped from buying alcohol in the supermarket because I've had one of my DDs with me though.

I do find it hilarious when I've been asked for ID as an adult though, particularly in my 30s and 40s. I did a fair bit of pub-going before I was 18 and never got asked then!

For the terminally stupid who have never worked a modern.
till...once you have requested id on the till you cant do anything else till you have put in the d.o.b. It's that simple. The screen stays on that there is no option to go to void anything. It's input dob or 'no id' button and sale of alcohol will not go through for that customers shopping

Of course they can void a sale, they'll have to if you don't have ID on you!

I was going to say that the machines just pop up with an age verified screen but I am not sure what happens if you actually need ID, given I've never been asked.

Some people really love to shit on cashiers................they're not making up laws

Customer service staff of all kinds (not just in shops but also eg in call centres) really do make up laws. Not their fault if the training has been rubbish, but the fact remains, they make up the law as they go along. If they don't know, they should ask. And if their managers don't know, they should ask. Not just about this, but also things like return/exchange rights or data protection. Too often people think their company's policy (or their specific interpretation of it, like the cashier above who decided that you had to be over 25 because of Think 25) trumps the law.

I get I'ded alot ,even when I've got my children(one is 11 so biologically impossible to be under 18) so I carry id with me .. I'm over 30 it's quite nice people think I'm under 25 .. It's the retinol I think 😂😂😂.. Be flattered by it and remember to bring I'd next time x

So you should know the law then?

I got ID'd in Sainsbury's buying scotch last year, I was 45 and although I do look 'good' for my age, there is no way in hell I look under 25. I was flattered though. The cashier said I have lovely hair and 'older people don't have hair like that' Confused flashed my driving license and went back to work, proudly told a few people who laughed incredulously Hmm Grin

She's correct once you ask for I'd if it's not provided store policy is to follow through and refuse the sale. Your also not able to accept word of mouth. Why would you take another employees word for it when your the one facing a 2 year prison sentence or unlimited fine. You could go to the person you know and be served by them if you wanted too. This person was doing there job. I'm 33 and got asked last week. I went home and got my I'd then went back again.
