Asked for ID

I am 34, I went to the supermarket today buying a top up shop incl a bottle of gin. Cashier asked me for ID. I didn’t have any on me but I am a regular in the shop and I went to school with the cashier on the neighbouring checkout and we had been chatting while waiting (his checkout was vacant). After I mentioned this (and school friend confirmed) I expected my cashier to back down as it was obviously a mistake. She refused. Claimed it was against the law to serve someone after you’ve asked for ID if they can’t produce it. I was absolutely gobsmacked. Why do people just invent laws to suit themselves and save face?

I used to run a pub so I know very well the risks of serving someone underage but this was clearly just a misunderstanding followed by total jobsworth behaviour.

bought a bottle of wine in Tesco today. I scanned it through the self service checkout and almost instantly it flashed up as being approved. I'm assuming that was a technical glitch unless they have programmed the machines to determine age now grin. Glitches aside, I'm 29 and normally get asked for ID.

I'm pretty sure that the member of staff on self service can approve a sale from their master terminal if they believe you are over 25 same as the checkout staff can in their till

FuckwitMcGee · 16/08/2020 15:52

I used to get irritated being asked for ID, but people are just doing their jobs. You're 34 now, a bit old to be raging about being asked for ID. Get over it.

AlcoholicHippo · 16/08/2020 16:21

Don’t like it? Carry ID

What if you don't have any? I don't drive and I don't have a passport.

The cashier could have voided the sale and started again once it became clear that OP was old enough. So I'm not buying that there's no way of getting out of it once you've asked for I.D.

I'm not sure this makes any sense. If OP is too old to allowed to be annoyed about something then isn't she also too old to be asked for ID when she's in her mid thirties? Is there an upper age limit whereby you have to stop being irritated by things?

eurochick · 16/08/2020 16:50

I don't carry my driving licence with me since I had my bag snatched a few years ago as part of a mugging. It had my driving licence (with my home address) and my house keys. I had a very tense night waiting to be burgled as a follow up to being mugged and then the expense of changing the locks.

For the terminally stupid who have never worked a modern.
till...once you have requested id on the till you cant do anything else till you have put in the d.o.b. It's that simple. The screen stays on that there is no option to go to void anything. It's input dob or 'no id' button and sale of alcohol will not go through for that customers shopping.

Plus once you have asked for id you are bound to follow it through we dont have a choice. Why do people think they can insist we risk our jobs over thier sense of entitlement?

Oh. Sad
SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/08/2020 17:41

I always feel superior on the ID threads as I have 3😂

You can get yourself a provisional licence even if you don't drive. Passport is too big and annoying to carry anyway. Carrying an acceptable ID should just be a normal thing when shopping for alcohol. Only once I went out for ciggies when I was 27 and was refused sale. I wouldn't dream of arguing with a staff even though it was my local tesco express. I had to walk home and then back. Lesson learned🤷🏻

Hoggleludo · 16/08/2020 17:47

I’m 41. I got regularly asked for ID till I was 40!

Surely that’s a good thing?

Hoggleludo · 16/08/2020 17:47

I meant surely it’s a good thing?!?

Not my situation

I don't drive either - I use my provisional as ID.

Likely the cashier would face a disciplinary if they voided a sale to backtrack on an ID check. In a lot of stores, management will check voids when cashing up to make sure nobody is stealing from the tills. I don't know why you don't "buy" it - retail managers are incredibly strict about age-restricted sales and cashiers have no leeway against company policy at all.

goodwinter · 16/08/2020 17:53

Or actually, in a lot of places, you need to call a manager over to be able to void a transaction anyway. Again, your average person on the till has no power over these things at all.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 16/08/2020 18:02

Tesco once refused to sell me a ready-meal lasagne because I had no ID. I was 40 at the time (and definitely looked it). I suppose they may have suspected I was buying it for DS who was 10, but I'm not aware of age restrictions on pasta.

FuckwitMcGee · 16/08/2020 18:02

@AlcoholicHippo Not necessarily. Perception of age varies with the individual viewer. Apparently some people just can't tell. Some people do look young.

I got ID'd regularly up to my mid-thirties (partly due to being a short arse, partly because I had a baby face) and hated it, but I'd got used to it long since, so gave up pointlessly whining and just learned to shrug it off. People are just doing their jobs, what's the use in complaining about how some random person perceives your age?

I think the most annoying part was that all the people who used to tell me I'd be glad of it when I got older ended up being right!

Regularsizedrudy · 16/08/2020 18:06

Boo hoo take your ID next time

Burnthurst187 · 16/08/2020 18:13

My friend got I.D'd for being in the alcohol section in Tesco. She was late twenties at the time. Ridiculous really as children can walk down the aisle

katieandlilliemae · 18/08/2020 02:44

If I get asked for ID I'm well chuffed 😂

LM2098 · 18/08/2020 06:01

Agree, I have always been baffled why cashiers of all people are allowed to query age, surely there should be a more official system in place.

YellowB33 · 18/08/2020 09:44

Surely if you used to run a pub, you'll understand that somebody saying that you're old enough isn't enough to prove your age!

Laugh it off and next time, take some ID.

Clumsyduck · 18/08/2020 09:49

Well I love still getting asked for ID in my 30s ! Grin I try remember to carry my driving license but if I don’t well that’s on me . They are just doing their job

Do you want a police officer standing there? I don't even... What "more official system"? What's the problem with cashiers doing it? Except that it opens them to unnecessary abuse from people who cannot be bothered to carry an id
