To think PureGym not opening 24 hours is stupid

Hello

Wanting to start the gym to become more fit, I do walk the dog every day but I just don’t feel as fit as I should.

Anyway, as PureGym is meant to be open 24/7, I am aware that since reopening, they’ve restricted their hours.

I know that this is because they need to sanitise the gyms because they are a breeding ground for germs, but surely they could just open 24 hours again?

They’re quite happy to charge their members full price and make no reductions in membership fees, members are paying for having the choice to go at whatever time they want, so they should at least reduce the fees if they’re not prepared to open 24 hours at this point.

AIBU?

And may I add.. surely If they’re not open 24 hours, people will just rush in before closing time which will mean too many people in at once?

I think reasonable to have reduced hours to allow for cleaning. I would not trust people late at night to observe social distancing either or reasonable cleanliness.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2020 20:43

Doesn't Pure Gym cost next to nothing anyway?

They probably don't have the margins to cut fees and probably have hardly any users during the times they're closing. Plus have probably lost a lot of members recently as well as seen increased costs, so can't afford to reduce their fees

JoJoSM2 · 15/08/2020 20:47

I agree that’s they’re very cheap already so probably no margins to lower than further.

How many hours will they be open for?

My local one is 6am-10pm Monday to Friday which isn’t too bad I guess, but on weekends it’s only open 8am-4pm

I don't see the issue. Is it closed at the specific time you want to use it? If so then ask to freeze your membership, or cancel your membership.

BananaPop2020 · 15/08/2020 20:51

@mummabear1967 you are being totally reasonable. For many, the attraction of PG is the 24 hour opening. I belong to another big chain gym and they too have cut their hours, which makes it far more difficult for me to go as I work FT.

Dozer · 15/08/2020 20:51

YABU. Imagine there are relatively few people there overnight and isn’t it a budget gym?

ItsmineAllmine · 15/08/2020 20:53

Sorry I have just re-read your post - so you aren't actually a member yet? Agree with others, the price is pretty low anyway, what would you want it reduced by? They'll be struggling financially as a company.

frasersmummy · 15/08/2020 20:56

Could be worse. Could be in Scotland where they are not open at all!!

dwiz8 · 15/08/2020 20:56

Yabu to be annoyed at them not opening 24/7

But yanbu to maybe ask if they will reduce the monthly cost since they are removing a 'perk'

Chachacha90 · 15/08/2020 20:57

I don’t think gyms can afford to drop their fees right now OP. Some staff are still unable to return and classes are so small.

I get it doesn’t suit you but they’re still rebuilding.

AbyssusAbyssumInvocat · 15/08/2020 21:03

They don't normally have staff there at odd hours tho so I think it's based on that!

Some are opening more. I think it's Loughborough that now open from 4am.

It is bollocks. I have to wait for DP to go to his appointment based gym at 6.30 and then I go after. I usually get there at 5! There are also loads of people there by 8! I'm used to going on exactly what I want. Also, they are barely open on the weekends. I didn't go today as there were 50 people there. Normally 30 and that's too many. See how tomorrow goes.

I have an off peak membership and only pay £10 so can't complain. Did you pay while they were closed and get the benefits?

AbyssusAbyssumInvocat · 15/08/2020 21:06

It is worse for DP. His gym went under during lockdown (was well on its way before) and he now pays more to go to the local council run gym but there is so little equipment he can't do what he needs. I've recommended mine but as it's a whole ten mins away, it's simply too much for him. 🙄

I have been quite close to closing time a couple of times and it was actually very quiet on both occasions.

They are actually limiting the number of people in the gym so even if people were rushing in then they wouldn't all be allowed in anyway if they reached their capacity.

Oh and Pure Gym costs peanuts...

Rhine · 15/08/2020 21:19

I assume it’s because it’s unstaffed overnight and can’t be properly policed.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 15/08/2020 21:20

They do a deep clean overnight now as well.

CynsterBitch · 15/08/2020 21:33

I’m a member of The Gym which has similar 24/7 opening and we’re currently 6-22 weekdays, 8-20 weekends. I think it works well, the gym app tells you what the capacity is do you know before heading to the gym, they limit numbers allowed to come in and staff are always on site and go around cleaning.
Judging by the amount of people who seem to be incapable of cleaning the equipment when they are done when the staff is there to oversee I would think there is no hope of the cleaning being adhered to if they went back to 24/7.

Biscoffscoff · 15/08/2020 21:45

They need to clean the gym! The level of cleaning they'll need to do now won't be possible with the gym open. Many companies are using specialist equipment to deep clean premises when the gym is closed. It's actually really difficult to properly clean somewhere that is open to the public 24/7.

I understand that.

They could try opening much later at night - maybe to midnight. And they should stop closing in the afternoon at the weekends. Makes it difficult for a lot of people to go
