Sorry guys but I’m posting for traffic.

Staying at mums at the moment watching her dog’s as she’s away for weekend.

Mum noticed a little bump on one of her dogs bum yesterday and told me to keep an eye on it, today it seems to have got a bit bigger and the skin is broken a little, which wasn’t the case yesterday. He is licking it excessively but it doesn’t seem to be painful... well I don’t think it is as I’ve touched the skin around it and he didn’t flinch.

Could anyone tell me what this might be and if I should take him to the vet today or leave it for mum to do on Monday. He’s a wee Jack Russell and I’m a bit concerned.

Could it be a swollen anal gland? Some dogs get accesses in them, which can be painful and swollen until they burst and bleed. Might be worth a little trip to the vet to avoid infection.

Sometimes they scrape their bottom along the floor when their anal glands need squeezing and this can cause the tear too.

First message should say ABCESSES

Thank his your typo is dog not DD!

Possibly an anal gland abscess although it’s a tad far away from the anus by the look of the picture.

BillywigSting · 15/08/2020 14:29

Looks like swollen anal gland to me too.
Trip to the vets to get it drained is in order.

If he's licking it excessively it more than likely is painful /uncomfortable even if he didn't flinch when it was touched.

Thanks guys, I’m just gonna take him, its got so much worse in a short space of time so best off just trying to get an appointment.

If you can’t get an appointment than bathing the dog will help - it’s much less painful after it has burst, so hopefully it will have burst already, in which case just try and keep it as clean as possible and try and avoid the licking. Hope your mum’s dog feels better soon.

Our dog had an anal gland abscess and as well as antibiotics we were told to bathe it with epsom salts

ShinyMe · 15/08/2020 14:50

If it is an anal gland the don't breathe in when you squeeze it. Those things smell worse than death.

2bazookas · 15/08/2020 14:56

anal gland needs emptying; take it to a vet.

How’s the dog now OP?
