Signed up for agency work...mil died, therefore had to cancel shift as dp couldn't childmind dd. She regusef to go to childminder as highly anxious.
Then today my car broke down mid shift so now they wonn't need my services any more. I cannot bloody help it if mil dies, childcare falls through and car breaks down. Their loss.

Forgot to say that i need car for shift as involves driving. So upset. I am a hard worker hut they expected me to work without even a lunch break.

I work with agency staff and the amount of people who fake deaths just to get a day or 2 off work would shock you. Several have killed off their own mothers only for us to find them alive and well on Facebook.

I'm not saying you lied about your MIL dying, I'm just saying I can see why they weren't particularly understanding as they've probably dealt with as many liars as I have.

Have you done any work for them or have you pulled out of each job?
Also, as harsh as it seems, your private issues aren't their problem, especially if you haven't worked for them long enough to build a relationship where they would know that this is an exceptional set of circumstances.

I'm sorry about all the trouble you are having, especially your bereavement, but ultimately they're probably acting from experience that excuses are like arseholes, everyone's got them. They need reliable people as if reflects badly on them if workers continue to not show up.

That's not to say I don't see where the company is coming from. It's their lively hood and time off is just time off to them. However I don't think it's the place of randoms on MN to tell her "She's let them down"

When did you sign up? I mean if those things happened over a 12 month period then fair enough but it sounds like it might a recent thing?

Agencies can be picky, there’s no way I’d have taken three days off from a temp role as it stands to reason they would find someone much more reliable. Not harsh at all from them to want a temp who fills the hours they need.

On the face of it, you are unreliable.
I’m really sorry but business need staff. They rely on agencies to supply staff at short notice.
If the agencies keep offering staff who can’t report for duty then the agency will have to let go of that member of staff.

Could your 12 year old not have stayed home whilst you worked? That would have only left the car incident which mid shift they may have been more willing to forgive.

Where does it say that her child is 12? I assumed under 5 if using a childminder.

I recognised the OPs name from several threads re career changes/inheritance etc and knew the DD was older so checked the age as a childminder didn’t seem to fit.

I let them down twice but a car brealing down wasn't my fault. When my mil died, dp had to oversee things and therefore childcare went overnight.
Today i was driving around happily untill mid shift then it wouldn't start.
Tbh they let me down twice too when they promised me 5 hours of work but the shift finished 2 hours early... twice!! Hence i am down 40 quid.

It's horrible that you've had this happen and I really feel for you on a personal level.

The unfortunate thing is that they need to be able to rely on people, and through no fault of your own, you've been unable to provide that.

To treat the OP as genuine, it is unfortunately shit, but as an agency worker you would expect to be replaced after being new and let them down 3 times.

Even if it was strongly unionised you would struggle to not be replaced, thats the trade of with agency work.

I know ...it's just one of those sad things. Also, if i am promised 5 hours of work ( and pay) , I need 5 hours. I guess we are both being unreasonable and not a match made in heaven! Plus...i need lunch breaks!

I start uni pkacement no 3 in two weeks. This agency job is my summer holiday work.

Feel bad for you but if I'm being honest I'd have dropped you like a hot rock too. I used to hire agency staff in my old life and when they didn't show up I got rid. The whole reason we used agency was because we needed to back fill a space urgently.

Also you might want to get your dd some support. I thought she was like 2 the way you were talking.
