To wonder what 'classics' my generation has to offer?

Music wise. Just listened to yet another new release that's a pile of shit. 'Joel Corey. - Head and Heart'. Sounds the same as the last however many mainstream club music.

I'm a club classic 80's and 90's fan. I also like a lot of other stuff like Pet shop boys etc. Nothing like that has been made again. It's all completely unremarkable.

Even if my music taste doesn't suit you, surely you can agree the current generation is rubbish for music?

The only name I think I'll remember when I'm 50 odd is Adele, maybe.

Oh, and Ed Sheeran. I'm not a fan but I can understand why people like his music style

Kind of difficult to say when we don’t fully know what “my generation” is?

Millennial? Gen Z?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/08/2020 14:47

I agree with you. I don't think any music today has staying power. Artists like Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Beatles, Oasis are still adored and listened to today. People won't be listening to Ariana Grande 50 years from now.

OrangeLavenders · 13/08/2020 14:47

I was born in the later 90's

Seems a bit 'cheap foundation' style. Might give a nice finish when applied but has 0 staying power Grin

Pharrell Williams
Beyonce

Celine Dion is still releasing music - I think her song Flying On My Own still sounds good, think it was released last year...?

GreyGardens88 · 13/08/2020 15:01

I'm sure they're trying their best - I don't see you releasing any music? Hmm

Mamette · 13/08/2020 15:01

Amy Winehouse

howlathebees · 13/08/2020 15:02

I think there is good music being released now it’s just not in the charts unfortunately

enigma16 · 13/08/2020 15:05

Agree with Adele and Amy Winehouse and also Duffy.

Michael Kiwanuka although he is not a household name.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/08/2020 15:05

I was thinking the other day about how all the headliners at the Rock/Metal festivals are the bands that were big 20-30 even 40 years ago and wondering who the 'new' talent is but actually there is quite a lot of good new stuff out there. Radio has never been a good place to discover new music with their restrictive set lists and I realised that as I'm not actively in the scene anymore going to gigs and clubs etc I've been missing out on loads of good stuff :)

BarefootHippieChick · 13/08/2020 15:06

I was born in the 70s and grew up on 80s pop and classic rock bands. I don't think there's many decent artists around today at all, most songs seem to sound the same and won't stand the test of time. Unfortunately nowadays most artists aren't actually famous for being talented. My friends and I still like to go out dancing and the pubs and clubs we go to mainly play rock/metal/80s and 90s. The majority of people they attract are late teens to early 20s, which just goes to show you they don't think much of todays music scene either!

User563420011 · 13/08/2020 15:06

Agree OP.
Music by people like Elvis, Frankie Valli, Michael Jackson and all the other huge artists are timeless. I can't see anyone still listening to most of todays music in 20 years. I don't even really remember a great deal from when I was a teenager (so around 2000-2006).

enigma16 · 13/08/2020 15:08

Alicia Keys

woodhill · 13/08/2020 15:09

I think Keane and Tom Chapman have staying power

woodhill · 13/08/2020 15:10

I do like the earlier stuff form 60s/70s/80s

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/08/2020 15:10

I actually really rate Bring me the horizon. I saw them around 2009 when they were still a Deathcore band and they were A Bit Much to be honest. Then last year I heard the Amo record and its so totally different. I think my fav stuff is the albums released in the years in between where I was oblivious.

howlathebees · 13/08/2020 15:11

You only have to watch a totp 80s special for a short time to remember there was a lot of rubbish out then too, time only remembers the greats 😂

adulthumanwoman · 13/08/2020 15:20

Kanye. Love him or loathe him he won't be forgotten.

RedRumTheHorse · 13/08/2020 15:21

You need to listen to what some younger people with varied music tastes you know listen to.

Nearly all the stuff that is now classic pop, regardless of genre, was thought not to have staying power when it was released e.g. Pet Shop Boys.

You also need to be aware that the radio networks have always had their own agenda and lots of artists have had to find other ways of getting heard.

unmarkedbythat · 13/08/2020 15:23

Every era has good music and shit music. If you ask me, the best of the 80s was early Metallica, but that's not what comes to mind for most when you ask about 80s classics. My eldest son loves drill, I haven't yet seen a video or heard a track that doesn't make me cringe with embarrassment for the performer but for him it is the peak of music. It's all so subjective.
