To wonder what 'classics' my generation has to offer?

Music wise. Just listened to yet another new release that's a pile of shit. 'Joel Corey. - Head and Heart'. Sounds the same as the last however many mainstream club music.

I'm a club classic 80's and 90's fan. I also like a lot of other stuff like Pet shop boys etc. Nothing like that has been made again. It's all completely unremarkable.

Even if my music taste doesn't suit you, surely you can agree the current generation is rubbish for music?

The only name I think I'll remember when I'm 50 odd is Adele, maybe.

I don’t really listen to modern music, but I was at a friend’s house a couple of years ago and they played some George Ezra, and man I love his voice. Very catchy tunes too.

namitynamechange · 13/08/2020 15:48

When I was young though, I liked music that sounded like noise to my mum, and used to actively seek out music I might like, go to smaller gigs, look up obscure music etc etc. Now I dont do that as much and have probably retreated a bit to music from my teenage years/from before. So there is likely a ton of music out there that either sounds like noise to me or that I simply havent heard of but in future will include classics. I do think rock/guitar based music is going through a bit of a lull on the whole (though there is good stuff out there) but a decade or more ago grime was just getting big and that will definately be remembered, plus theres stuff like drill and at the other end of the scale K-pop. Absolutely not my cup of tea but then its not targetted at me!

namitynamechange · 13/08/2020 15:51

Although to a previous poster referencing bands like Green Day/arctic monkeys etc etc they started out in the 90s/2000s so while they are still going today I wouldnt class them as of this generation...

namitynamechange · 13/08/2020 15:55

Currently Im mostly listening to the Idles and -Dixie- chicks though - I think the chicks are massively underated in this country but probably will be remembered in many years time mostly because theyre much better known in America

namechangetheworld · 13/08/2020 16:03

I might not be the best judge as I don't think I could name a single artist currently in the top 40 (if there is such a thing still!) but I imagine artists like Coldplay, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Pink, Panic at the Disco, Rhianna, and Maroon 5 will all be considered classics for this generation.

TwentySixPointTwo · 13/08/2020 16:05

I was a teenager in the 90s. It was very hard then to understand which songs would become classics and live on, and which would be forgotten.

It took about 10-15 years for this to start to become clear. It needs to be long enough for that generation to grow older and nostalgic....

You have time yet Grin

EuphegeniaDoubtfire · 13/08/2020 16:07

@adulthumanwoman

Kanye. Love him or loathe him he won't be forgotten.
I was going to say Kayne. But for the wrong reasons.
SarahBellam · 13/08/2020 16:14

The Killers, Foo Fighters, Muse, Sam Fender, Nothing But Thieves, Blossoms, Two Door Cinema Club, Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Wombats and Kings of Leon are just some of the great and future classics. There’s some fantastic music about at the moment, especially for indie rockers 😜

Ponoka7 · 13/08/2020 16:21

My Chemical Romance started in the 2000s. So did the Kings of Leon. As said Amy Winehouse. Artic Monkeys Maroon 5, Slipknot, none to my taste but good.

I think One Republic are underrated and Ryan Tedder not recognised as a song writer as much as he should be.

Linkin Park rivals earlier rock bands and would have continued to be great.

Ponoka7 · 13/08/2020 16:26

Mary J Blige and Rihanna will stand the test of time.

Calvin Hartis, Example, Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, all great. Admittedly Faithless was better. There's probably many more.

Hingeandbracket · 13/08/2020 16:28

Winston Surfshirt
Clean Bandit
Hot chip

Just off the top of ma heed.

june2007 · 13/08/2020 16:33

TBH I think Amy Winehouse was overrated I liked some of what she did but she wasn,t making music like her early stuff in the end. (and she wasn,t yet 30) Why because her voice was wrecked. Prefered Zutons version of Valerie.

alibongo5 · 13/08/2020 16:40

Coldplay
Greenday
Foo fighters
Arctic monkeys
You only have to watch a totp 80s special for a short time to remember there was a lot of rubbish out then too, time only remembers the greats
But most of these are in their 40s!

And yes, there was rubbish in the 80s too but I remember one episode of TOTP (not a compilation, just a normal weekly show) which had about 6 songs which were classics - I think it was The Jam, The Stranglers, Michael Jackson, and others who I can't remember. I stress that that was in one week.

Hingeandbracket · 13/08/2020 16:40

I was going to say Kayne. But for the wrong reasons
His first album (which seems to have been forgotten) was genius. He's just gone downhill since he started believing his own hype.

Pukkatea · 13/08/2020 16:52

Every generation whinges that the current music isn't as good anymore. People on here listing artists that have stood the test of time - with the people who grew up with it yes! Teenagers aren't listening to bloody Frankie Valli. Songs will become classics because the CURRENT generation will remember and love them from THEIR youth.

OrangeLavenders · 13/08/2020 16:55

Meh, I wouldn't really call Beyonce, Rihanna and Kings of Leon 'my time' music. Their good stuff was not out when I was a adult or young person. It was out when I was younger than age 8!

But as for the music now I'm in my early twenties... What even is there? Nobody iconic I can think of.

There are great tracks by less well known artists today but they won't be remembered much either because not many people are aware they exist

I will remember Kanye but not for his music, more so the drama. Not his music though

Pukkatea · 13/08/2020 16:59

Most of what was released in the 80s was also forgotten dross. Go and look at the top 100 from a random 80s year and I bet for half of them the top selling song was some random song by Shakin Stevens noone has played in 25 years.

OrangeLavenders · 13/08/2020 17:01

Pukka Of course but there were goldies mixed in with the shite

AdventureCode · 13/08/2020 17:15

Totally agree with Kanye, most of his singles are indivually classic, I'd noticed two adverts using his old music today alone.

I came on to say Arctic monkeys too, they're so distinctive.
I also hate to kind of say it but Harry Styles recent singles are all catchy and do have that timeless feel.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/08/2020 17:17

TBH I think Amy Winehouse was overrated I liked some of what she did but she wasn,t making music like her early stuff in the end.

I mean, she was very unwell towards the end of her life so it’s understandable that she wasn’t making much music but the two albums she did do are brilliant and will definitely stand the test of time. I think she paved the way for some of the great artists who’ve followed her (Adele etc).

OP with all respect, you’re pretty young and I’m sure there is still lots of great music from your generation that is yet to be made. Let those of us who are more.. mature have Beyoncé and Rihanna Grin

Also Dua Lipa is your age and she’s fab. YY to Harry Styles too.

LakieLady · 13/08/2020 17:17

I was gobsmacked when a colleague 40 years my junior told me he his favourite band ever was Talking Heads. He wasn't even born when they split up, so he must have been listening to his dad's music. Or maybe his granddad's!

He turned out to be a huge fan of 70s and 80s music and reckoned modern stuff was all shite.

TheAquaticDuchess · 13/08/2020 17:30

YABU. There are incredibly innovative and profound artists producing music at the moment. You might consider Beyoncé, Janelle Monae, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine, Haim, Drake, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Carly Rae Jepsen and Frank Ocean for starters.

TheAquaticDuchess · 13/08/2020 17:32

Lemonade is only 4 years old and is the best thing Beyoncé has ever made, as well as one of the most instantly iconic and significant albums of all time...
