To wonder what 'classics' my generation has to offer?

Music wise. Just listened to yet another new release that's a pile of shit. 'Joel Corey. - Head and Heart'. Sounds the same as the last however many mainstream club music.

I'm a club classic 80's and 90's fan. I also like a lot of other stuff like Pet shop boys etc. Nothing like that has been made again. It's all completely unremarkable.

Even if my music taste doesn't suit you, surely you can agree the current generation is rubbish for music?

The only name I think I'll remember when I'm 50 odd is Adele, maybe.

I’m thinking Stormzy, Beyoncé, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers and Adele will probably make it.

nestisflown · 15/08/2020 10:29

The original Sugababes line up. Their comeback song a few years ago, MKS- Flatline, is one of the most tragically underrated songs of all time

nestisflown · 15/08/2020 10:37

Other than that I agree with people that have said Kanye, some of Beyoncé’s music, Common, Alicia Keys, some of Rihanna’s music will be classic chart bangers (in a Tina Turner way), Adele, etc. Even some of Taylor swifts music will be remembered I think. Also many modern Caribbean artists have classics that will always be dancehall/reggae classics even if they aren’t mainstream.

There’s quite a few but I do feel many modern artists prioritise quantity over quality. The artists that will stand the test of time tend to take their time writing each album (unlike the likes of Ariana Grande and Justin Beiber who just pump out a new album each year).

nestisflown · 15/08/2020 10:39

Oh- forgot Sia- let’s be honest Chandelier will be one of the defining noughties anthems in the future.

The Arctics and The Killers early albums (which they're most known for) are 15 years old though. Where's the new bands?

Beyonce the same and she was topping the charts in the 90s with Destiny's Child.

Adele's first two albums are memorable but again you're going back a decade.

Most of these artists were big in the 2000s decade though, rather than specifically now or the last few years. Every decade has always produced huge new acts that have endured. 2010s far less though.

The serious artists tend to take more time than ever now to put a new album out. The Beatles usually put an album out every year, often 2. That was common in the 60s and 70s as the record companies demanded it.

The moment you start complaining that music isn't as good as it used to be is the day you have officially turned into your parents. "It's just noise".

There is, obviously, good music out there which will be remembered. There was also fucking awful music in the past which has been forgotten as much as the shit music today will be.

BritishSleeperAgent · 15/08/2020 19:34

Queens of the Stone Age formed in 96 but are still making amazing music. Ditto for the Prodigy (who date back to the 80s) who are still putting out quality product.

If you like 80's stuff, you might want to check out She Wants Revenge (Joy Division inspired) or White Lies (Depeche Mode inspired). (I know, both effectively the same band).

If you like something a bit unusual, can't beat UNKLE or Jill Tracy, although they may be too niche to be counted as classics.

Hozier and Nikki Minaj both get big thumbs up from me. So do Machine Gun Kelly and Twenty One Pilots. Drake, DJ Khaled, Tricky I think are solid shoo-ins. There are lots of independent singer-songwriters out there doing great stuff that I think will stand the test of time.

I think the charts are outdated. They were dying when I was a teen (90s, I'm a GenXer), Spotify and the like have killed them. Sirius XM is where I find a lot of modern stuff that appeals to my tastes, as does the playlists Spotify generates based on your liked songs. I'm sure Apple Music and Amazon Music do something similar.

I seem to be something of an outlier here in taste. Taylor Swift drives me up the wall. Ditto Harry Styles and Adele. No thanks. Maybe they will become classics but they're not for me.

@woodhill

I think Keane and Tom Chapman have staying power
WTF? Keane don’t have any impact now, 20 years after they were popular, let alone in the future!

The same was said about the Beatles in the 60s, and yet...

woodhill · 15/08/2020 21:08

Ok ok Dolly.

I went to see them in 2019 and they were very good.,Hopes and Fears was a brilliant album. My Dd likes them as well

We all have different tastes😕

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 15/08/2020 21:15

Sia

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 15/08/2020 21:18

Ah, sorry, I see she was mentioned just above.

alittlehelp · 15/08/2020 21:19

Lorde. Lady Gaga.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 15/08/2020 21:33

Kendrick Lamar

powershowerforanhour · 15/08/2020 23:59

Yes another vote for Sia: Chandelier as mentioned-Titanium and Elastic Heart could make it too.

powershowerforanhour · 16/08/2020 00:43

I dunno about a classic but I hope they still play Niall Horan's "Slow Hands" on the radio in future. It will always make me smile (and if I was young and a boyfriend sang that to me, my knickers would melt).

Hopes and Fears was great but it was 16 years ago now.
woodhill · 16/08/2020 11:41

I listen to Rumours - 42 years' old approx and still a great album😊

The80sweregreat · 16/08/2020 16:18

My son is 23 and a huge Fleetwood Mac fan. Rumours and Tango in the night are his favorites. He also likes The Beatles and 70s disco such as Chic and The Bee Gees!
