Would you feel safe enough going to the cinema now, alone or with children?

No. We bought a projector and screen from Amazon at the start of lockdown and each week we've done outdoor cinema with the DC which we've all really enjoyed. It's been much nicer and to be honest the only film I wanted to watch this summer was Maverick and that's been put back to July 2021.

millymollymoomoo · 13/08/2020 10:09

I agree. If I dont have to wear a mask through the film I’d happily go. We all need to be out and about - yes we can eat at home, drink at home and watch films at home - and lets all watch the high street, shops, restaurants and cinemas collapse along with millions of jobs

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 13/08/2020 10:10

I would but ours are still shut.

Norugratsatall · 13/08/2020 10:18

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Ah, thanks to the PPs for clarifying that masks don't have to be worn once seated. All I heard was 'masks have to be worn in cinemas'.

The government need to be very careful when issuing confusing blanket statements, especially when it deters people from patronising businesses that are now on their knees.

Yes I misunderstood this too! Would happily go if you're able to watch mask free!
rc22 · 13/08/2020 10:20

DH and I have been twice. We really enjoyed it. Sanitiser freely available. Only a few other people in the auditorium (although it was midweek, don't know what the weekends have been like) and everyone was well spaced out. This was before masks were required though and not sure if I'll feel comfortable in a mask for two hours.

We don’t all need to be out and about. Those that want to can but those that choose to do less riskier activities can do as they please. They are likely supporting the economy through online shopping etc.
pasteldechocolateconchispa · 13/08/2020 10:25

I’d happily go, there is a muse thing being realised at imax cinemas so I’m booking up for that, it’s also on one of Rishi’s days so we can have dinner out too.

Miss Saturday cinema so will book tickets.

EleanorOalike · 13/08/2020 10:27

I wouldn’t and this has been exacerbated by recently being given the wrong person’s Covid result (told negative but was called at home over a week later to be told it was a mistake and the result was actually positive upon hospital discharge) and realise had I been out and about, especially in environments, like the cinema, that I could have infected everyone without knowing. No symptoms except loss of smell btw.

A colleague has had to cancel his two week holiday through being in contact with a Covid confirmed case but, despite being told to isolate for the next 14 days, he is out and about with his kids at attractions that are open, cinema etc. If anyone might have caught it due to the proximity of how we work, it’s likely to be him.

Caught Covid on a “Covid Free” hospital ward by the way!

I just don’t really trust the process of testing/track and trace and people’s willingness to self isolate when they know they have been in direct contact with a Covid case or are exhibiting symptoms.

caringcarer · 13/08/2020 10:28

I would go if anything I wanted to see. Nothing new put though, all old stuff.

ShinyMe · 13/08/2020 10:29

I'm off work at the moment so I've been 4 times in the day time. It's deserted, it's cheap, and feels very safe.

gerbilgirl · 13/08/2020 10:30

We have been twice so far to our fantastic local cinema.

Tickets and seats are booked online and the system blocks out the seats each side of you, in front and behind you.

Both times we have been there has only been us (family of four) and one other group. It feels very much like going to a quieter screening.

Staff have all been great and there is a one way system through the building.

We are also booked (without the kids) to see Tenet and have promised the kids one more trip before they go back to school.

Masks had to be worn to go through the foyer and buy snacks but could be removed once seated. We then put them back on to leave.

It felt safe and well organised and so nice to be able to go again.

OrigamiOwl · 13/08/2020 10:32

I thought the rule was you had to wear a mask in the auditorium unless you were eating? The government guidelines are very unclear!
I've been after lockdown ended but haven't been back since the new rules came in. I like a snack at the cinema, but can't eat my way through a two hour film!

If I didn't have to wear a mask in the viewing I'd go back.

It's a shame as pre-covid I was a very regular cinema goer. Definitely something I miss!

VaggieMight · 13/08/2020 10:32

I'd go to a drive-in. I couldn't go to an indoor one as, apart from anything, I'd worry about the social leprosy of coughing right now. (I mean me coughing or clearing my throat).

Palavah · 13/08/2020 10:33

Not to go into a screening. Yes to stand in a corner under the a/c

MadisonAvenue · 13/08/2020 11:56

Up until March we used to go to the cinema weekly and had Odeon Limitless membership.
They’ve restarted payments for that this month and we’ve had to ask several times to have it frozen for longer as we don’t feel safe and Odeon have finally said that they’ll freeze it for a further three months.

Neither of us feel that it’s worth the risk, plus with Odeon you can’t prebook a seat when selecting tickets online and are directed to somewhere to sit by a member of staff when entering the auditorium, so to get a bit of a say in where you sit you need to get there as early as possible.

kittensarecute · 13/08/2020 11:58

Sure. If there was anything good on. I like going to the cinema.

AryaStarkWolf · 13/08/2020 12:03

I already have done, they block all the seats behind, in front and beside you when you book here (in Ireland)

willywillywillywilly · 13/08/2020 12:05

Yes and I'm so excited!! I've booked tickets to see Tenet in a couple of weeks' time Grin

Hotandknackered · 13/08/2020 12:07

No. We used to go loads. We had the unlimited passes for odeon. (couple no kids) so often went at least weekly. I've had a look at what they're doing re covid. Although u don't think it's massively unsafe I think it wouldn't be nice sitting for a few hours with a mask on.

VinylDetective · 13/08/2020 12:08

We’re cancelling our Cineworld membership. Cinemas feel unsafe and there aren’t any decent films coming up anyway. We’re doing drive in tonight to see Grease for the millionth time.

RuthW · 13/08/2020 12:10

No I wouldn't

Timeforanotherusername · 13/08/2020 12:11

I won't.

I am sure it is safe enough but the thought of wearing a mask puts me off.

It would impact my enjoyment of the experience so it's a No now.

In a few months time when its harder to spend time outside then I may decide that the inconvenience of wearing a mask is not an overriding factor.

HowFastIsTooFast · 13/08/2020 12:14

Absolutely if there was anything that I wanted to see, even with wearing a mask it doesn't bother me, so long as I remember to wear my contacts! Just nice to get out of the house and do something a bit normal.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 13/08/2020 12:14

Yes - It's Air Conditioned!!!
(and more exciting than standing in the freezer aisle of the supermarket)

Have been musing over this - I normally buy an annual membership, then every visit is free; my last one expired late Feb, and I didn't renew.
Bit concerned that if I buy it and they go into lockdown again I will lose out. I think they extended memberships for the first lockdown, but the site now says up front "memberships cease 12 months from start date" or similar, I don't think it was so prominent before.
But don't have real concerns over going to a cinema.

dayslikethese1 · 13/08/2020 12:15

Some people are saying you have to wear a mask through the film and some are saying only in the foyer; I'm confused! Does it depend on the cinema?
