To think this isn't someone I want to work for...

I've seen a job advertised but as they've not stated the salary (a pet peeve of mine) I emailed them to ask for a ball park figure before applying.

Six emails in and I'm none the wiser.

Why not just tell me instead of me applying, potentially interviewing then finding out it's too low and wasting everyone's time?!

Yeah, I wouldn't bother applying. Unless its top executive level and likely to be ££££££ and very negotiable theyll try and shaft you. Not just with the salary either

Palegreenstars · 11/08/2020 20:28

Yes it’s such bad practice and excludes so many from applying. I as send your CV but don’t put any of your qualifications and just put ‘competitive’.

EuphegeniaDoubtfire · 11/08/2020 20:28

I'm not going to.

Unfortunately, some companies really value my role, while others don't. I've seen some jobs paying £60-£70k for my qualification and others paying £25-£30k, which is why I have to ask.

As a general rule, I find non-disclosure means it's going to be low and that they know full well they're not paying market rates for the role.

VimFuego101 · 11/08/2020 20:37

YANBU. Such a waste of their time and yours.

1984isnow · 11/08/2020 20:46

I love this 😆 I would love to see reactions to this.

My dp applied and was offered job which was advertised as competitive pay rates. It turned out to be NMW, non negotiable so he declined.

The job was readvertised with a note saying 'NO TIME WASTERS'

RoseGoldEagle · 11/08/2020 20:47

YANBU, it’s such a waste of everyone’s time. If they’re not advertising it it’s likely not great though. How’ve they managed to avoid the question in six emails?!

EuphegeniaDoubtfire · 11/08/2020 21:07

Three from me; three from the manager.

Me: salary?
Him: apply via this link
Me salary?
Him: DOE
Me: So, £30k too much?
Him: yes.

My current salary is over £40k. I realised after the first response it would be a waste of time, but I still wanted an answer!

I applied for a job recently. Had a call from HR person who wanted to check a few things and at the end, almost as an afterthought, asked for my current salary. She said the role paid less than half that - was I still interested? When I said no she sounded almost triumphant as if she had scored some kind of victory. Waste of everybody’s time.

Aliceinwanderland · 11/08/2020 21:36

I will no longer consider applying for jobs that don't at least advertise a salary range.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 11/08/2020 21:43

Tempted to apply just to use this.

My son has taken a summer job whilst he's home from uni...he had a phone interview...face to face interview and had worked a month before he found out the pay...it really riled me that he didnt ask and they didnt tell him...its nmw for a 22 year old.

ODFOx · 11/08/2020 21:53

Agencies will usually give a ballpark figure even if the ad doesn't.

CorianderLord · 11/08/2020 23:19

Every job I've applied for basnt listed the salary. They ask what I want and then make an offer (usually higher)

CorianderLord · 11/08/2020 23:20

But yes it's total bollocks. Some pay £28-30 and some pay £18k for my role. It's stupid

HouchinBawbags · 11/08/2020 23:49

You: Salary?

Company: Depends if you're Jane Doe or John Doe.

Applying and interviewing takes time and effort on your part which could all be for nothing because it is actually a terrible salary. They want someone desperate enough for a job that the applicant won't ask how much. Think how little they value employees there, knowing that they have the upper hand because the employee needed a job.

nevermorelenore · 12/08/2020 01:54

I recently came across a great job that was 'competitive' pay. Did a test piece for them that they gushed about and had a great telephone interview. Got to the end of the call and the salary? £18k. For a job where you need to be a graduate and have five years of experience and have knowledge in an area that's quite niche and hard to recruit for. I don't think that's even minimum wage.

For context, most roles I have been looking at have offered 32-35k for a similar experience level. So they really are cheap bastards. God am I sick of stagnant wages.

This. They pay men more or everyone horribly.

My last job gave a range, which is useful for negotiating.

Flipflopsaga · 12/08/2020 02:10

Absolutely ridiculous! The company are being really unprofessional after the numerous emails you have sent requesting a salary figure! I expect that it is a low figure and thus they don’t want to disclose. Everyone needs to know how much they are going to be earning to maintain/improve the lifestyle that they have! Farcical.

babydisney · 12/08/2020 03:43

Love some of the responses, I find more often than not employers don't seem to understand basic employment laws either which is baffling 🤷‍♀️
