we've got a week booked there leaving Saturday and I'm on complete tenterhooks! I know its a first world problem but after 3 kids home educating hell a low-key rural self catering place seemed just the ticket a few weeks ago, now I feel soooo in limbo....

LucyLeak · 11/08/2020 18:04

Snap. Booked last year and would cancel if we were able to without losing ££££.

stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 18:06

can you imagine everyone gannetting the last 3 holiday homes still available in the ukGrinEnvy if/when they do it

OP posts:
smalalalalalala · 11/08/2020 18:12

Why?

I am in France, have been for 10 days now and rules are far more respected than in UK re masks, distance, etc. Touristic places are a no-no but rural is fine, apart from heat wave.

So far, France have dealt better than UK, bans seem more a way to blame someone/something, i.e. the foreigners than actually doing something than is helpful

LucyLeak · 11/08/2020 18:13

Ruled out a plan B, holiday here is so expensive. Plan C is to leave kids with family members and have a blissful child free night away with just DP and lots of gin.

stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 18:17

I like that idea Lucy! smallalala I am not jealous of you being in France at all Envy don't know why but their vases are rising steadily and they're betting worried.its 99% gonna happen imo just a question of when

SomeOtherGirl · 11/08/2020 18:20

Same, we want to book France but are worried about possibly having to isolate for a fortnight when returning. Clarity would be great.

stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 18:26

I wouldn't mind quarantine, would have to clear it with my boss though, but I think they will ban all non-essential travel to enable those who can't isolate to not go and claim money back like Spain. if u travel against guidelines it invalidates your insurance @SomeOtherGirl

Starbuggy · 11/08/2020 18:27

YANBU although you were foolish to book a trip abroad in the last few months knowing the pandemic situation!

Uncertainty can be more stressful than anything that actually happens! The worst case scenario would be the rules changing while you’re over there. Can you afford to quarantine for 2 weeks if that happens? If not, I wouldn’t take the risk of going at all tbh, even if the advice hasn’t changed by Saturday.

SomeOtherGirl · 11/08/2020 18:29

I'm not sure I fully follow the detail of that but we would find isolation very hard. No-one to get shopping, difficulty getting online orders in the recent past, no garden, a small child and a husband who is self employed in an outdoors job. Wail!

I usually go to holiday home in France for 6 weeks over summer. Not this year. Going to stay with.inlawd in Bridlington for a week. Then days out to zoo park farms etc. Will go back to France next year if no Covid.

mynameiscalypso · 11/08/2020 18:34

We were there last week and it was glorious - felt so much safer than the UK and cases in our region are very low (1000 to date out of a population of over 1m). We're supposed to be going back next week and I really hope we make it.

wrexham · 11/08/2020 18:35

I sympathise with the OP over the uncertainty, and today's figures cannot have helped.

However, we need co-operation over migrant boats, which makes me think France might not be added to the list.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/08/2020 20:37

Overall I am really amazed that people are justifying holidays (home or abroad) right now. In all of my extensive (ha!) social circle, I only know two families who have gone away on holiday.

One family including a teacher and police officer are in Spain and will have to quarantine for 2 weeks when they get back. The other family have been in France for a week and are due back tonight or tomorrow so will escape any quarantine.

I just don't know anyone else who has kept their holiday plans or booked new holidays. We all grit our teeth and stay local and get on with it.

Boom45 · 11/08/2020 20:41

They announced the travel ban to Spain literrally hours before we were due to fly. Fuckers. It's very annoying.
(I didnt book anything during a pandemic, I booked months before any of this started and I was hoping I'd get to see my family)

Drivingdownthe101 · 11/08/2020 20:43

I know lots of people who have kept their holiday plans, as if they didn’t they would have lost £1000’s.
Our flights to Spain were cancelled by the airline. If they weren’t we would have gone, as we would have lost the money otherwise. We were due to fly back the morning before quarantine was reintroduced!

We live in a central London flat with a small child. There are hundreds of people who live in our building. We have to go out for food/shopping and to let DS get some fresh air. We've had to get the tube, go to medical appointments etc. On holiday, we were in the middle of nowhere and apart from the odd trip to the supermarket, saw nobody for two weeks and were outside almost all of the time. I know which one is safer (and better for all of us both physically and mentally) in my opinion!
Humphriescushion · 11/08/2020 21:01

I am on tenterhooks too, but in reverse, due to go the uk from France next week. Was expecting news on quarantine today or tomorrow.

Feelingconfused2020 · 11/08/2020 21:02

Almost everyone I know has made alternative holiday plans but is still.going somewhere for a break. I am surprised you only know 2 sets of people @Chicchicchicchiclana. I have to say we have chosen to stay in the UK, it was the travel with all the restrictions that I couldn't face. I also didn't like the idea of getting somewhere and finding that things were closed or locked down. You are not suddenly.in.massive danger if you go to France or Spain. Figures here are pretty depressing.

stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 21:27

yeah it seemed an ok idea to book at the time, we live near the coast and it was like 'popping over', not flying or anything, good for us all, the kids stay off their media devices and would have played in the river. but....not to be...sorry for anyone else in this situation too of course. should have gone last week isn't hindsight a great thing!

OP posts:
stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 21:29

@Boom45 that sucks and @SomeOtherGirl that generally sounds hard for you

OP posts:
CrumpetsAndPuzzles · 11/08/2020 21:38

We should know on Thursday - Thursday seems the day when quarantines are announced, e.g. Belgium.

TacosTuesday · 11/08/2020 22:03

Same here OP, if they're going to do it, get on and do it...the endless (press) speculation is harder than the cancellation! The press are loving it too. For the PP who only knows 2 families who have been on holiday this sounds unusual-since the travel corridors opened up we know lots of people going/gone all - some booked pre-covid but not all by any means. Just like many people are starting to eat out and visit attractions again so are people going on holiday.

Whiskeywithwater · 11/08/2020 22:16

Ditto ... going next week, driving, staying in a villa - literally zero human contact. Couldn’t be any less likely to catch/transmit anything. I can quarantine - kids going back to school a different matter! Just fucking tell us!!

RunningNinja79 · 11/08/2020 22:28

Noooooooooo Lets not ban it. Totally selfish of me I admit, but we're due to drive over in 10 days. I'm looking forward to my holiday. Booked it in November as its the same thing we have done the last 5 or so years. Back in April/May we really thought it wouldn't happened then by June it looked very likely. Now it might not happen.

I'm hopeful it's still a possibility. As it stands we have every intention of going.

stovetopespresso · 11/08/2020 22:43

yeah its been a pain in the arse today for me, especially when I see so many posts on fb of people who managed to get away in time - so as you @Whiskeywithwater zero human contact planned in remote area, was gonna take a load of food to minimise shopping
