Was I justified in being a bit cross?

Or maybe hot and bothered would be a more apt description!

I work out of an office, but spend most of my time in a hospital. Up until now the office has mostly been empty except for a team leader (of another team, not mine. My team is only 2 months old).

Yesterday the office was busy with various departmental managers doing an H & S evaluation. Also yesterday, it reached 35.5 C here. I came back to the office after walking over 4 miles around the hospital, absolutely baking hot. Honestly, I was dripping - combination of the uniform, ppe, the heat etc. It was not a pretty sight!

There are 5 fans placed throughout the office, including one next to the desk I work at. I switched it on. The other team leader came over to me, turned to one of the managers sitting at the desk behind me, and said "are we allowed to have fans on?"

Turns out we're not! Ok, fair enough. But a) why are there fans in the office if we're not supposed to use them, and b) why has he not told me this before but waited to do so until managers are in.

I do realise this is a bit silly, but I felt that firstly he was a bit snidey in the way he told me, and secondly, I was so HOT!

Oh gosh, it's too hot for work full stop, let alone in uniform + ppe!

PawPawNoodle · 11/08/2020 14:27

Christ why aren't fans allowed under H&S? Is there air con?

CoRhona · 11/08/2020 14:28

So what is the point of the fans?! Confused

BurnIt · 11/08/2020 14:28

At the moment fans are advised not to be used due to covid

OldEvilOwl · 11/08/2020 14:29

why the hell are there fans there then and why are they not allowed to be used? did you ask?

Gose · 11/08/2020 14:37

Burnit I didn't know that. It's not been told to me before - perhaps because the office has been near enough empty.

I did say yesterday that I hadn't realised we weren't meant to be using them, and the manager said (after confirming that we weren't supposed to) that she could see how hot I was, and it was up to me.

So naturally, I felt uncomfortable using it then! Fortunately it was near the end of my shift.

Pol there's only air con in the meeting rooms, not in the main body of the office.

I feel your pain!
I work in care, full ppe and no fans is awful in this weather, I'm so glad I'm on holiday this week!!

I work on a very hot hospital ward & we’ve not been allowed fans all summer due to Covid.

YANBU to be cross when you’re so hot & hadn’t previously been told about it. I would absolutely still use the fans when you are alone in the office too.

Gose · 11/08/2020 14:54

Albern and Coffee I take my hat off to you both. I absolutely could not survive in this heat without short intervals of relief. Fortunately the vehicle I have to drive has good air conditioning so at least I get a blast with that now and again!
