Elderly drivers should be tested

91 year old killed a 3 year old in Edinburgh.
She’s been arrested.

Where I live (NW London) lots of elderly drivers are scarier than the teens racing.

A woman was killed in Sainsbury’s car park near me and the 80ish year old was upset he’d be late!

I think everyone should be retested every ten years.

We daily see 20 somethings drive through our 20mph village like it was a race track at high speed. We've had 3 fatal accidents, all were drunk 20 somethings. Round here, it's not the elderly who are the problem.

I think the problem is the self certification system. If coronavirus should have taught us one thing is that you can never rely on the ordinary public doing the right thing off their own bat. Elderly people are not saints, they are the same Joe public who happen to be older. For every elderly person who is responsible there are probably 2 more who think the rules are for other people. This is not unique to their age group. Just like we see irresponsible under 30's and entitled 40 somethings there is probably the same percentage of entitled and irresponsible people in the over 70s who ignore the rules and fuck everyone else. The problem is with them and the question is how do we better mitigate their disasters whilst protecting civil liberties?

Self certification does not work well and it is (understandably) difficult to remove a licence from someone who doesn't want to give it up. So the only thing I can think of is similar restrictions to the under 30s. A black box and a mandatory physical every renewal.

Though I would totally get behind refresher courses for all drivers. I could see how I would benefit from something like that as the rules of the road can change a lot from when you first pass your test. It couldn't hurt could it?

Why is it on MN no one can criticize
the elderly..

We all know boy racers, drunk drivers exist.Same as elderly drivers who shouldnt be driving.

Theres shit drivers in all walks and all ages oflife.

I totally agree.

My personal solution would be some kind of driving simulator that tests reaction times and also a sight test.

We can, and do, there are over 300 posts on here and a large percentage are criticising the elderly.

@Nannewnannew yes because the post is about an elderly driver killing a child.People saying what about x,y or z have no bearing.

Your reactions and eyesight do slow down.So something has to be done.Theres no way round that.
