back in the days when there were only 4 channels to choose from and kids' tv was from 4-6 on weeknights and on Saturday morning.
Eg. Bonanza reruns, Snooker championships..... the very bottom of the barrel was horse racing for me!

I got parked at my granny's on Saturdays with only Jackie magazine and tv for entertainment. Starting the day with Saint and Greaves and collected after Blind Date! Coronation street omnibus in between

I remember that feeling when Saturday morning tv ended and you were stuck with the news and horse racing or football which was sooooo dull.

Then youd turn on the telly on Saturday afternoon to get into the game shows and doctor who and you’d always be too early and have to watch the football results show.
Sunday was always tea in front of the Antiques Roadshow.

Then when I was a bit older we used to rush home on a Saturday for Gladiators followed by Baywatch, or was it the other way round?

Anyone at home during the day now would agree there is a lot of rubbish on still. I can watch Homes under the Hammer all day! However I have the draw the line at Doctors - then I know I need to go and do something more productive!!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 11/08/2020 10:09

Old film on Sunday afternoon, dad used to watch wrestling iirc on Saturday afternoon.

When I was very young children TV was just Watch with Mother which was Wooden tops, Andy sandy etc and Blue Peter.

When I was older, probably about 11, exciting programmes were The Saint, Jason King, The Prisoner, Randall and Hopkirk and Softly Softly.

Entertainment on Saturday evening was The Black and White Minstrels, Andy Williams, Val Doonican and Morecome and Wise.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 11/08/2020 10:09

Oh, and checking the Pools on Saturday teatime was very important

nonetcurtains · 11/08/2020 10:21

I'm a sixties child so: Watch with Mother (my favourites where The Woodentops and Tales from the Riverbank), Stingray and the original Thunderbirds.
Evenings were Coronation Street and Steptoe and Son. Sunday night at the London Palladium or The Black and White Minstrel Show.
Saturday afternoons were spent watching the Wrestling with my Nan while she did the ironing.

We must be a similar age!.. We also sat through the pools results each wee. But no-one in the family even did the Pools!

*week

thenightsky · 11/08/2020 10:40

Banana Splits.
Black and White minstrel show.
Champion the Wonder Horse.
Val Doonican show.
The Andy Williams Show
The Dave Allen Show (but he wasn't crap).

On Sunday nights, the telly was mostly off as my dad had to listen to Sing Something Simple with the King Singers on the radio.

morriseysquif · 11/08/2020 10:47

Grace Dent recently did a programme about shit summer tv, it was on last week, very good I recall, BBC4.

morriseysquif · 11/08/2020 10:50

@The80sweregreat

Reality shows were not around much in the 80s, but I do recall a show called ' the big time' with Esther Rantzen on bbc one and Sheena Easton did get her big break on there. She even sung with Prince and did a Bond theme! There was also 'Opportunity Knocks' and 'New faces ' which was a sort of forerunner to Pop Idol ,( well, Simon Cowell did say it gave him the idea for his shows, but just for singers ) Many comedians did well out of these shows too. I used to love 'Flambards' and bought all the books. Was a bit in love with Will.
Flambards, remember the theme tune! I was a bit in love with Dick!.Smile

Dads Army- those little white arrows going across Europe used to scare me half to death (I was only little!) The Wheeltappers & Shunters Club The Good Old Days
Blimey I'd forgotten all about Wheeltappers and Shunters. 'Members of the committeeeh'!
Hippofrog · 11/08/2020 10:59

The Storyteller especially the episode with the Hedgehog man😮 bloody terrifying

Icequeen01 · 11/08/2020 13:10

I'm a 60's child and used to love Tinker and Tucker the two little bears (although I have a feeling Tinker was spelt Tinger but could be wrong!).

During the 80's I was totally hooked on Knotts Landing (spin off from Dallas centred around Lucy's parents). I remember taping the last episode of a series and something happened and it didn't tape properly. I phoned my SIL who was also hooked on the series and she rushed out and posted her VCR tape to me in the post!

I also loved Moonlighting. Bruce Willis was sooo gorgeous in that.

What fine taste I had 😂

Icequeen01 · 11/08/2020 13:16

Just checked and it was Tingha and Tucker with Aunty Jean. Even managed to watch a few clips. You youngsters don't know what you missed!

MrsGrindah · 11/08/2020 17:43

@Hippofrog was that the programme where the song went

I’m a story teller and my stories must be told
I have many stories , tales for both the young and old
......
Sometimes there are tears, some there is laughter
But always a happy ever after

Moonflower12 · 11/08/2020 22:11

@ClementineWoolysocks

I really loved it too. I remember the beginning showed her sitting on a swing!

Hippofrog · 11/08/2020 22:13

@MrsGrindah Yes I think that was it but my god it was so scary. Quite sinister

gower4 · 11/08/2020 22:19

There were some really weird afternoon soaps - A Country Practice? Take the High Road? The Young Doctors?? Did I dream those? Grin

The80sweregreat · 12/08/2020 18:09

We went to Scotland for a holiday in 1995 and stumbled across the place where ' take the high road' was filmed! Had a man playing the bag pipes there too! Was a big tourist attraction ..
My mum loved ' sons and daughters' !
(One of them married his sister by mistake or something! )

Kapalika · 12/08/2020 18:11

Monkey Magic. Loved it.

Viviennemary · 12/08/2020 18:16

Prisoner Cell Block H . I was devastated when they got a new Frankie. And Bad girls. And the Brothers. Nobody will remember this. It was on on Sunday night's. And Revelations. And the Mistress. That was very odd.

barbrahunter · 12/08/2020 18:19

In no particular order:
Top of the pops
Morcambe and Wise
Crackerjack
Belle and Sebastian
the herbs
Trumpton
Chigley
Monty Python (I wasn't allowed to watch it but my idiotic sister was)
Harry Worth
Benny Hill (eww)
The Double Deckers

AgeLikeWine · 12/08/2020 18:23

oomymoomy · 12/08/2020 19:02
