back in the days when there were only 4 channels to choose from and kids' tv was from 4-6 on weeknights and on Saturday morning.
Eg. Bonanza reruns, Snooker championships..... the very bottom of the barrel was horse racing for me!

ITV was apparently common, however my mother watched

Emmerdale Farm
Coronation Street
Crossroads (think that was BBC?)
Howards Way
Bergerac
Dallas
Hi De Hi
Antiques Roadshow

Dad didn't like shite tv so I was always with him on the tv viewing choices:

anything with David Bellamy
The World about Us
M.A.S.H
Dr Who

I haven't watched any soaps since I left home, I've never missed them.

BabloHoney · 10/08/2020 21:48

chergar Sunset Beach was the best.

somm · 10/08/2020 21:49

Just to add, I definitely don't think those series were 'shite', so sorry for not addressing the original post.

SteelyPanther · 10/08/2020 21:49

When I was a kid and off school sick, a couple of afternoons of Crown Court had me running back to school !!

Watch ya talkin about @The80sweregreat? The Rockford Files was ok??? ShockI loved Jim, Rocky, Beth, Dennis and Angel and wanted to live in a beach side trailer on a beach in Malibu!

To answer the op, there was a lot of shite tv to choose from. There was the Dynasty kind of shite which I watched regularly as a teen with my best friend. And there was Big John, Little John kind of shite.

@chergar

Oh eurotrash reminds me of a show called Carnal Knowledge, does anyone remember that?

Saturday afternoons watching sunset beach Blush

The Brittas empire that was another one we watched

Was Carnal Knowledge not an early outing for Graham Norton?

toomanyplants · 10/08/2020 21:56

Miss world... complete with scoresheets and a kitkat for whoever picked the winner 😳

PoloNeckKnickers · 10/08/2020 21:59

When I was at Primary school in the 70s, there were only 3 channels and there was usually a film on a Sunday evening which everyone would talk about the next day. The two I remember watching were Goldfinger and The Italian Job. Even the Head Teacher talked about it in assembly Confused
I remember my mom used to let us stay up to listen to the theme tune from The Sweeney, but then we had to go straight to bed once the action started. On Friday nights we'd be allowed to watch a prison drama called Within these Walls.
Comedies were very un PC and went above our heads- Man about the House, Love Thy Neighbour, Bless This House, It Ain't Half Hot, Mum.

The highlight of the week was Top of the Pops on a Thursday and having to sit through Tomorrow's World beforehand was agony- so boring!
Dr Who (Tom Baker) on a Saturday and in the evening, we'd watch a quiz show such as 321.
We used to watch Magpie after school - never Blue Peter for some reason as we thought the BBC was a bit too posh!
For as long as I can remember, we always watched Corrie and I have continued to watch it often out of a weird sense of duty because most of the time it's utter shite!

Oh yes that was the pits!
bluebluezoo · 10/08/2020 22:00

As a kid I was an early riser.

I used to get up and watch bollywood movies, this was back in the 3 channel days. Bbc1 would be open university, bbc bollywood, itv nothing until morning programs later.

OU stuff was sometimes interesting, but Films where everyone wore colourful clothes and went off warbling at frequent intervals was fascinating!

botswanabanana · 10/08/2020 22:01

@Acrasia Wimbledon and the Budget too - interrupted a midweek night iirc!

tobee · 10/08/2020 22:03

I wasn't even allowed to talk to my mum when I got home from school and the budget was on. 😞

gower4 · 10/08/2020 22:04

@chergar I remember the Flintstones etc pre Neighbours! On a Thursday it was some weird kind of game show about keeping healthy!!

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 10/08/2020 22:08

gower4 · 10/08/2020 22:13

Pebble Mill always handy for an afternoon of boredom

blurpityblurp · 10/08/2020 22:27

I ran a Sunset Beach fansite on Geocities circa 1999. BlushBlushBlush

InspectorGoul · 10/08/2020 22:33

Banana Splits when I was a kid and Boon as an adult. I used to go and watch Boon in my lunch hour from work at a friends house. We were obsessed with it. I watched an episode recently and it was total garbage!

EllaAlright · 10/08/2020 22:38

Thunder in Paradise
California Dreams
The Secret world of Alex Mack
Hanging with Mr Cooper
Sweet Valley High.

EllaAlright · 10/08/2020 22:39

Ahh I loved sunset beach! Also the funny voice over duo on the end credits of it??

Moonflower12 · 10/08/2020 22:40

Laverne and Shirley. Set in Milwaukee. I think they worked in the Budweiser factory?

And a BBC2 (?) programme called Maggie set in Scotland. Maybe Glasgow? About a girl who didn't want to work in the local factory and was going to be 'someone'.

Todaywewilldobetter · 10/08/2020 22:42

I loved Sunset Beach too! And Eldorado.
