Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

@HaudMaDug

If you want to feign sympathy for us then do it in winter when its proper brass monkeys up here. You found Paris on a map but didn't notice we are on a latitude with Scandinavia and further North than MoscowSad not sad just baltic
I think this is a really good point. The national news and media is so (south) Anglo centric that many people don’t realise that most of Scotland’s weather and topography match Scandinavia.
BiblioX · 10/08/2020 22:49

Hahahaha we all have winter quilts on all year round here in my area of the Highlands, did in Glasgow too!! Scotland is beautiful and can have really lively days but it is not the same heat-wise. It is not the same in so many ways.

unchienandalusia · 10/08/2020 22:52

Hilarious OP.

Surely no one is actually this dim and small minded in real life?

Bellebelle · 10/08/2020 23:04

There’s a Gaelic primary school in Edinburgh that has increasing numbers of kids going there and a Gaelic unit in one of the high schools - think that a stand alone Gaelic High School is due to be built if the council ever get their act together.

Deep fried Mars Bars available all over Edinburgh, I do think they’re mainly there for tourists but they serve them on the menu at a couple of sit in restaurants in town as well. There’s a big restaurant called Berties that has them on their dessert menu, it’s on Victoria Street (the one with the pretty shops that you always see in photos of Edinburgh which apparently was JK Rowling’s inspiration for Diagonal Alley although it’s difficult to find a paving slab in Edinburgh city centre that didn’t apparently inspire JK).

@ludothedog

I do wonder about the frequent posts on here about expensive school uniforms including blazers. George is standard wear here, if you're feeling flush then M&S. Other than private schools no one wears blazers.

Loving farmer Jim aye!

I live in a city and every school has a blazer. Different colours too
chrislilleyswig · 10/08/2020 23:13

@celtiethree

All the state schools in our local authority have blazers as part of their uniform. They are mandatory in my local high school and are expected to be worn this week. That said they are not wool and definitely not too hot in the Scottish weather. Easy to wash and dry. Cost is roughly £50 and we’ve always got 2-3 years out of each one (starts v big finishes quite small 😂), so very good £ per wear cost!
Quality polyester with badge already attached. Bung it in the washing machine.
ssd · 10/08/2020 23:20

You not got a telly op?

ssd · 10/08/2020 23:23

@silver3

And yes, to the pp who asked, I have been to Aberdeen once and I have to say it was sheet rain for three days solid. I went to the Highlands and could barely see two metres in the bloody fog. And by Edinburgh castle my DD was blown over in a freezing gale.

But they doesn’t mean I should presume that Scotland has permanently shit weather does it? I was just unlucky those times.

Sounds like a normal summer to me.
Linnet · 11/08/2020 00:38

Our blazer is not a wool blazer, it can be put in the washing machine. It comes with the badge attached and usually lasts a few years.

Blackbear19 · 11/08/2020 01:08

The funny thing is that when I look back to my childhood I spent entire summer holidays playing with my friends all day long, exploring the woods near our house and playing tennis and football and doing handstands outside. I don't know if I'm looking back with rose tinted glasses but summers seemed a lot drier when I was young, although not necessarily warmer.

I read some science on that and it's to do with the way memories work, you remember the days playing in the sun and combine them together you forget the days you were playing in the house because it was raining.

The high school kids in my area also wear blazers and ties. All state schools - North Lanarkshire
I'll agree with that. South Lanarkshire is the same. Some primarys push for blazers others don't bother.
Personally I think they are the most pointless garments, neither wind or waterproof. Schools would be better to push the waterproof jackets with badge.
Summer uniforms only became a thing after Neighbours & Home and Way was tea time telly. Although that might be an East / West / Highup / Less exposed divide. I remember working near a primary school on South side of Edinburgh not long after I'd left school thinking I'd never seen Scottish kids go to school in school shorts!
School have asked all kids to bring a jumper and have waterproof jacket. Windows will be kept open and outdoor learning.

Deep fried Mars - only seen them advertised in a chippy near Aberdeen.

Op you've given me a giggle thankyou. I've had my brain blown by the ignorance, blows to bits by my own ignorance Edinburgh is further west than Cardiff WTF! It explains the Scottish reason for pushing to keep GMT and not switching to CET.

Here's some other Scottish trivia.
Glasgow has Glasgow Fair, Edinburgh has Edinburgh Trades, basically different names for the same thing. They both have different September Weekends.
The have the same October Week but the Fifers, Highlanders and Aberdeen folks get a fortnight,(for the tatties).
Some areas get Spring Break, which may or may not include Easter others get Easter fortnight.

I actually wish we had Sun Days that were public holidays when it hits 25 deg. It would be a bonus for everyones Mental Health and vitamin D levels. Going to work in 25deg is a waste of a good day.

I went to primary school in Glasgow in the late 70s early 80s and it was the norm back then for boys to wear shorts and girls summer dresses. They were worn in uniform colours 🤮.

I think the OP is getting a bit of a hard time here. I remember knowing that England was warmer but the first time I rolled down out of the mountains and landed in London I was gobsmacked. I remember phoning people specifically to tell them it was February and I couldn't wear my coat as I was roasting and they were amazed too. We were like Terry Pratchett's Hublandish Barbarians Grin

runbummyrun · 11/08/2020 07:58

@silver3 have you ever been to Scotland?

The weather is very different

runbummyrun · 11/08/2020 08:00

Who would have thought? For instance, Paris is probably equidistant south from London as Edinburgh is north

This gets better hahahahaha hahahahah

IDontLikeZombies · 11/08/2020 08:00

Growing up in the Highlands I've had my education disrupted by snow, floods, lightening, breakaway sheep rampaging round the village, a bull in the playground (that was flipping brilliant 😂), high winds, an army excercise, low flying jets. A heatwave would probably have killed us all off with shock.

LagunaBubbles · 11/08/2020 08:05

I find comments like yours astonishly ignorant OP, ok maybe your geography is crap but don't you see Scotland on a weather map when they are doing the national forecast?Confused

ssd · 11/08/2020 08:11

Mine wore wool blazers in s5 and s6, when they had braiding on.
I used to put them in the washing machine on a wool/silk setting using liquid for wool, like delicate non bio stuff. They came out fine, hang in a hanger outside to dry.

naptimeismyhappytime · 11/08/2020 08:13

This thread is hilarious! Trying to imagine the public reaction if wee nic suddenly annoyed today that the schools are not going back to school tomorow because it's a wee bit warm this week 😂

That would go down SO well!
Grilledaubergines · 11/08/2020 08:31

Find astonishing that yes the OP has made a fairly stupid statement, back up with a little more stupidity and the result is a Nasty pile on about southern Englanders. Find that more ignorant than the OP!

museumum · 11/08/2020 08:35

It’s very misty in edinburgh this morning but some posters are exaggerating. It’s been a nice summer here but as usual the best weather is June into July. By mid August the summer is usually ending (then September is often fryer again). the map for today shows 20ish in most of Scotland which is just lovely.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 11/08/2020 08:45

Given I’ve seen Londoners ask about “rural living” when the town in question was on the tube...

The most shocking thing about this thread is that someone was letting their fucking dog bother the haggis. Ffs keep your dog on a lead. Farmers have better thing to do than race their stock to the vet to have them stitched up just because you’re irresponsible dog owners. 🤬

So Scotland should alter its whole school holiday/term time system because its hot in Londont this week?
400 fecking miles away!!

You seriously can't imagine that we might have different weather from you?

Maybe you should go back to school Op and learn some geography. Scotland isn't a little subarb of London!
