To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

How can it only be 18 in Glasgow when it’s mid 30s here?

If only there was some kind of place you could find out the weather in another city.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 10/08/2020 14:23

Where do you buy singing shoes??? I want them!!!

Cakestandkitchen · 10/08/2020 14:23

I’m in rural Perthshire. It’s about 16 degrees today and cloudy. I have joggers and a hoodie on and nearly put the heating on this morning.

That and blazers are ties are banned in school when we go back until at least October.

nagynolonger · 10/08/2020 14:24

You need to get out of your southern bubble OP. Of course the climate in Scotland , and the North of England is different. They get more rain too and slightly less daylight in the winter. That's why we don't stay on British summer time all year round.

Not every area has the same school holidays even in England. We always found ourselves holidaying with people from Scotland because our DC school finished early in July. It was cheaper and less crowded.

silver3 · 10/08/2020 14:25

so sorry Blush - I meant the shoes were singe-ing , not singing fgs!

"I wonder what other crazy shit southerners think about Scottish people? grin"

"I remember a post on here a couple of years ago from someone coming from London looking to go on a weekend break to Edinburgh in December and wondered if there would be anything opened here because it was winter 🤔🤔"

I can beat that, I remember a thread where English posters were surprised we had shops here and though we got everything delivered!

Dugsbollox · 10/08/2020 14:26

I wish there was a general consensus about uniforms. Both schools mine go to are saying full uniform, including ties. I was really hoping for something much more relaxed, like polo shirts and sweaters for autumn.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2020 14:27

There are 2 high schools in my town and 1 is saying full uniform and the other (my dc's school) is saying no blazer or tie.

a12345b · 10/08/2020 14:28

😂😂suffocating heat 🤣its barely warm.

Cakestandkitchen · 10/08/2020 14:29

Dugsbollox- we’ve been told clean clothes everyday so because you can’t wash ties and blazers they are banned. It’s relaxed uniform for now so joggers and jumpers.

ToriaPumpkin · 10/08/2020 14:29

I'm just outside Inverness and absolutely melting. But I fully suspect when my kids go to school on Wednesday (comfy trousers, trainers, polo shirts and sweaters/hoodies) the torrential rain will return for them and their school's attempts at outdoor learning.

ForhowLong · 10/08/2020 14:29

Grin This thread has flushed out all the Scottish MNers hasn't it!

Poor OP. I too thought this must be about the 'poor Scottish children' testing the waters for being thrown back to school en masse with no social distancing. Now THAT does deserve a thread of its own and for once, it might be of great interest to those south of the border.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/08/2020 14:30

I’m not sure which thread has been more surprising today, this one or the one where a poster has declared, in all seriousness, that all women are completely equal now and have no discrimination against them etc etc.
Shock

This is what I was hoping for. Mainly because the shirt, tie etc is so stuffy. And needs ironed, and I'm lazy 😄
britINscotland · 10/08/2020 14:32

I'm not a nationalist, but it's stupid ignorant posts like the OPs that creates nationalism. Don't you at least watch the news or the weather forecasts OP or do you always 'just assume' every part of the UK is the same as where you are?

2bazookas · 10/08/2020 14:34

@eggandonion

Do Scottish schools finish up at the end of June or earlier? Irish primaries, north and Republic, are off all July and August. (I daren't mention secondary holidays in the republic). I always assumed it was because extra help was needed around farms.
Scottish school term finishes at the end of June, until mid August. Then there's a further two-week holiday in October. All first-year Primary pupils start school in August, no January intake. . Primary schooling lasts seven years, Secondary schooling starts at age 12, and all state schools are Comprehensive and mixed.
Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/08/2020 14:36

ForhowLong that’s what assumed it was about when I clicked, which I fully agree with. But no, it’s about the fluctuations in weather patterns across the British Isles archipelago. Grin

TheShapeJaper · 10/08/2020 14:38

Are you having a laugh? 😂

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 10/08/2020 14:38

This thread is hilarious and ridiculous. Do you really think that the temperature in the south of England applies everywhere? Even where I am (roughly halfway up to Scotland) it's a fair bit colder than it is down south. It's amazing to realise that some people really are that ignorant!

CaptainMerica · 10/08/2020 14:42

This is as funny as the time Nicola Sturgeon announced it was now permitted to sunbath in parks.

2bazookas · 10/08/2020 14:43

"Of course I realised Scotland tends to be cooler than London but no, I would have not have thought it would be half the temperature at this time of year. Who would have thought? "

Guess what; in winter London is much warmer than Scotland, often by 20 degrees. Also, London's mountains are much smaller than the mountains in Scotland.
silver3 · 10/08/2020 14:45

Yes I do watch the weather forecast - not obsessively, but it is what it is. When I last looked, there was a massive red / black heat zone over Europe and about half of England and emanating out from that was an orange zone over Northern England and Scotland, so I had assumed that although these areas are not at the centre of the heatwave, they are still experiencing raised temperatures to a lesser degree.

As you are telling me now, this amounts to it being about 16 degrees. Fair enough and I have apologised for not checking the exact temperatures before posting. But equating my post to a reason for Scottish nationalism or that I am accusing Scotland of mistreating children is far more ridiculous than anything I’ve posted here.

Nubbled · 10/08/2020 14:46

I'm In Scotland and we have a weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain (with possible flooding) and hail.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 10/08/2020 14:48

Half the temperature

You might need to brush up on your physics if you really think that 30°C is double 15°C.

spaghettihoops16 · 10/08/2020 14:49

It's the kids where we live I feel sorry for - it's 125 degrees today. Next month is will still be about the same with 80-90% humidity. Beyond disgusting! The school uniforms are made for a UK climate too, especially the boys trousers.

Poor buggers!
