To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

@Newmama29

I wonder what other crazy shit southerners think about Scottish people? Grin
I remember a post on here a couple of years ago from someone coming from London looking to go on a weekend break to Edinburgh in December and wondered if there would be anything opened here because it was winter 🤔🤔
Lucked · 10/08/2020 13:33

Google tells me average August temp in Glasgow is 19c with 13days of rain! Gardening in a jumper in a Glasgow suburb today.

It is actually not unusual for us to have our clearest sunniest days in April and May. The first month of lockdown was glorious.

HaudMaDug · 10/08/2020 13:33

If you want to feign sympathy for us then do it in winter when its proper brass monkeys up here. You found Paris on a map but didn't notice we are on a latitude with Scandinavia and further North than MoscowSad not sad just baltic

rosesandcashmere · 10/08/2020 13:34

Scotland is around 20 degrees no? That's hardly warm. We have warmer autumn days

Loftyswops988 · 10/08/2020 13:34

The further down this thread I got the funnier it seemed. It has to be a joke, surely you'd look at the weather forecast in at least one Scottish city before starting a thread OP?

Bassettgirl · 10/08/2020 13:34

Jeez, self-absorbed is a bit harsh. It's given a few people a giggle and actually raises a valid point about term dates and weather (possibly not Scottish ones Smile)

MouthBreathingRage · 10/08/2020 13:34

@Biancadelrioisback

OP it's because you decided to feel sorry for an entire countries children based off of something you know nothing about, have no experience of yet assumed your very different experience was relevant. It's quite self absorbed to not even attempt to look into something before you throw your opinion around.
I completely agree with this. The whole thread just seemed a bit on the goady side actually, why would NS have the will or power to overhaul the entire Scottish education system just because of the weather.
Pittapitta · 10/08/2020 13:36

They break up in June and it’s been very hot the past few June’s when English kids are still in school... swings and roundabouts

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/08/2020 13:37

London is well known to have a micro-climate and is often quite different from places that are close by but not as urban.

This thread reminds me of the time that DH and I went to Edinburgh for a short break. It was Easter time and we had ALL the weather in short rotation, bright sunshine in clear blue skies, drizzle, heavy low cloud, lashing rain, blizzard and then back to blue skies. DH, who is Malaysian, was baffled by it.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/08/2020 13:38

And, because our schools break up a bit earlier than English ones we get cheaper flights for our holidays.

But, we have to accept midges in return.

AnneOfQueenSables · 10/08/2020 13:39

You're getting a hard time. Thanks for your sympathy for Scottish DCs even if it is misguided Grin
The weather you experienced in Edinburgh and the Highlands is generally what our weather is like. We had two nice days this weekend but we rarely reach the heady heat of London.
It's not entirely your fault that you were unaware, the media act as though everyone in the UK is having a heatwave because England is. We learn to be sceptical of all weather headlines because they rarely apply to us.

CountFosco · 10/08/2020 13:39

It is currently hotter in London the Marrakesh, Addis Ababa, Tripoli and Lagos.

Bassettgirl · 10/08/2020 13:40

How has the OP been goady?

justasking111 · 10/08/2020 13:40

Wales not great September is always better, need wellies and brollies here this week.

needtostartagain · 10/08/2020 13:40

This is the stupidest post ever. I always wish kids were off in July when weather is nicest, rather than Aug when the weather is starting to turn!

silver3 · 10/08/2020 13:40

Anyway, despite all the sarky ones, I would like to ask this to be honest -

Do people across not think that August, or summers in general, are not distinctly hotter over the last decade or so. Yes, I can only speak for the south-east, but can it really be that the difference is only being felt here?

It’s seems to me that there are regular yearly floods now in western regions. I think this must be a sign of global warming. Similarly, I’ve been in London 23 years and I’m sure when I first came, something like 25 degrees was considered a hot day. Now it regularly gets into the 30s and sometimes high 30s and this is also far more frequently the case in northern France, etc as well - forest fires, people passing out on the underground and other issues.

Has Scotland not noticed any changes in the summers then?

How do you function, that is grim.
ThePluckOfTheCoward · 10/08/2020 13:41

This has to a wind up. Here Op have a Biscuit. Oh, and 4/10.

merrymouse · 10/08/2020 13:41

OP it's because you decided to feel sorry for an entire countries children based off of something you know nothing about, have no experience of yet assumed your very different experience was relevant.

The implication, however light hearted, also being that Scottish people were doing something that is detrimental to the welfare of their children. That is always dangerous ground to tread.

SweetPetrichor · 10/08/2020 13:42

Regardless of exact temperatures, although I assure you it's not that hot in Scotland right now, do you think we shouldn't have to go to work in summer? I mean, it's hot isn't it...if the kids can't manage how can we possibly manage. Wink

Sorberret · 10/08/2020 13:43

Grin this thread is hilarious!

MacTootBlowsonHisBagpipes · 10/08/2020 13:43

I think we need Farmer Jim's thoughts on the matter.....

Well, the Rest and Be Thankful is closed much more often these days than it used to be when I was a wee girl....so more rain?

Wherrsmaclickypen · 10/08/2020 13:45

Lets not all get too analytical or overheated here. if was just a really, REALLY stupid question. It happens.

But love the pages and pages of 'My local temperature is....' rebuttals from across the nation* 🤣

*20C here but real feel of ooh, about 8C. Merino wool tshirt, big woolly cardigan.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/08/2020 13:45

@silver3

Yes July can also be too hot, but It less predictably stifling in July than August. It’s always mud-August you get the 35 plus temperatures and here in London (and I imagine other cities) it’s too much on public transport etc. High 20s is one thing, but you notice how lethargic you feel once you get past the low 30s.

Maybe it’s global warming, but the weather has changed. I’m not sure when, but it has.

Also, mine break up in the first week of July anyway.

I don't necessarily agree that August is always warmer than July in London and Wikipedia seems to agree with July and August fairly similar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_London

I have a memory of lots of hot weather in July only for it mostly to have disappeared by the time the schools are out

Can I also point out that the 'AVERAGE' temperature in July and August in London is around 23-24 deg. So it isn't generally very very hot all the time, In fact it more often isn't that hot really.

Following on from that I'd guess that Scotland probably has average temperatures of around 15-17 in the summer.
