To feel sorry for Scottish children?

Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

Well people can call me thick or whatever as much as they like but if I was to start a thread about the weather in Scotland being interminably cold and wet, I’d have just as many posters calling me “Londoncentric” and, “ohh I’m on the East coast near Inverness and I’ll have you know we have more days of sun than Wales...” yadda yah yah yah, Or “yes OP, we’re all huddling on the glaciers like haggis up here.”

As I said, once again, of course I realise the weather varies across Britain Confused. But no, I did not think temperatures would be in the teens on average up there at this time of year either.

Ummmmm, its 14 here in Aberdeenshire, grey, drizzly and we are expecting thunder. Our kids will be just fine, I reckon!

TheKrakening3 · 10/08/2020 13:21

Ah, another “it’s too hot” thread for all the Aussie mumsnetters to have a giggle at. How do school kids, dogs and babies survive in actual hot climes?

HuggedTheRedwoods · 10/08/2020 13:21

OP - if you watch the weather forecasts after the main news bulletins, you might be surprised at the differences the national weather map shows.

I talk to colleagues based around the UK most days and its interesting how different our local weather comparisons can be, sometimes just within 50-60 miles or so.

Owleyes16 · 10/08/2020 13:21

Bloody hell OP do you really think the whole country is like London? I live in the North East of England and it's only got up to 35 degrees a handful of times in my entire life! It's sunny and warm here today, at a whopping 18 degrees! Storms tomorrow, then due to be cooler. It's not a city thing either, no other city in the country is as hot as London regularly is. Have you never watched the national news, weather forecasts, etc?

Lockdownsucks · 10/08/2020 13:22

14° in dundee and my kids dont wear blazers. Theyre looking forward to going back to school this week 😊

PapsofJura · 10/08/2020 13:23

I saw the title and thought that the thread was maybe Covid or SQA related but weather related, specifically hot weather related and Scotland 🤣🤣🤣. Just doesn’t really happen!

MoreListeningLessChatting · 10/08/2020 13:24

Edinburgh 17 and cloudy

In fact average temperature in Scotland is showing as 17 degrees and cloudy..... wow imagine 'such a high temperature' anywhere else in the world how do they cope in Scotland!

Shock Hmm

Bassettgirl · 10/08/2020 13:25

@TheKrakening3 my grandmother emigrated to the Oz in the 50s, and turned back again when she found out it really was quite hot actually Grin

Enchantmentz · 10/08/2020 13:26

We don't have consistent hot weather here even in august, a short lived heatwave won't harm anyone. Currently dc school is taking a relaxed approach to uniform as they expect children to be in fresh clothes every day and probably realise people can't afford 5 of every piece of school wear or to be able to keep up with washing.

20'c and below is hot but not too hot which is the most we usually get, 25'c or above is too much. London temps in scotland are even rarer and rarer still to be consistent.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/08/2020 13:26

Scottish people - shall we tell them about how it's dark on the way to school and back from school at the winter solstice?

We'll blow their minds.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 10/08/2020 13:26

As PP said end of nearly every news bulletin there are weather maps of UK with temps on.

Wherrsmaclickypen · 10/08/2020 13:26

Bless you silver3, perhaps todays life lesson is not to turn to social media in general, and Mumsnet AIBU in particular, when you are sleep deprived, stressed, traumatised and without a responsible adult on hand.

Take the back chat in good humour, us Scots are just jealous that its not suffocatingly hot like elsewhere. Have a better rest of your day. 😀

foxyknoxy30 · 10/08/2020 13:28

Ehh hello we are in Scotland

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 10/08/2020 13:28

Just wanting to wish all the best to the mums (and dads) and children back to school in Scotland today?

It's a bit toasty here in the big smoke central London and I understand more warm and pleasant up north. I heard compatibility issues with air conditioning and Covid despite HEPA filters.

Missing the world famous Edinburgh Festival Military Tattoo and Highland Games but that is life and happy to be relatively non Covid impacted personally but can't say I want to home tutor anymore! So please school open soon in London! I need to book a glamping break in a remote island with cooler weather soon first though.

DotForShort · 10/08/2020 13:29

Goodness, why are you responding with such outrage when people are pointing out how wrong you were? Yes, it's embarrassing to admit your ignorance, but the fault lies with you, not with anyone else. Own your mistake, educate yourself, move on.

(P.S. The haggis references were jokes.)

dottiedodah · 10/08/2020 13:29

Well ATM I envy you Scottish lasses! Its 28C here in Bournemouth ,and was 31c yesterday ! Beach is packed ,and I felt ill over the W/E due to heatstroke from going out in the park!Woke up in the night and my water bottle was warm . lovely!

Aye, before we know it the nights will fair be drawin' in. wraps shawl around self
mylittlesandwich · 10/08/2020 13:30

I have an odd outfit on the go today. Central Scotland. 17 degrees so I've gone for leggings and a jumper. I like the fresh air though so I have the window open. It's pretty grey and sad looking. Aberdeen according to my phone is the same temperature but brighter.
I lived in Aberdeen for years and always found it cooler but drier. Back down here though it rains all the time.

tigger1001 · 10/08/2020 13:30

Yeah I would just rather schools adapted a sensible uniform policy in warm weather.

Thankfully blazers not required for either child.

As others have said not often above 30 here!

Conversely, we went to London a few years ago in November and the weather was glorious - warm (mid teens) and clear blue sky's. All the shop assistants were complaining how cold it was while my son and I were wandering around with no jackets on

Biancadelrioisback · 10/08/2020 13:30

OP it's because you decided to feel sorry for an entire countries children based off of something you know nothing about, have no experience of yet assumed your very different experience was relevant.
It's quite self absorbed to not even attempt to look into something before you throw your opinion around.

mumontherun14 · 10/08/2020 13:31

Lol no wish we had a heatwave here! No chance. Don't feel sorry for them my kids are looking forward to getting back - been a long 5 months off!! x

GinwithPinkGrapefruit · 10/08/2020 13:32

Hello from Sunny Dundee! waves

A balmy 17 degrees here. We also have a weather warning for storms 🤞🏻

Samster45 · 10/08/2020 13:33

North east England here and warm but not hot. Around 18 here. It’s been a bit sunny the last few days but a nice cool breeze.
I always find August to be the wettest of the summer months. Our hottest is usually end of May and most of June with a Week or so in July. My experience of August is usually wet and unpredictable.
I sometimes feel the north east should join Scotland for school timings as we probably share more in common with the Scottish summer for weather than the English. We would benefit breaking up earlier and going back in August I feel then at least the kids would have a warmer summer holidays

LookMoreCloselier · 10/08/2020 13:33

This is so funny. Think op needs to go back to school. Grin
