All the marches, Protests etc and people still don’t seem to understand!

Will they ever?

Address the real issues.

LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro · 10/08/2020 18:39

I don't see any white person here making it about them except those (white, black, mixed, etc) who are invalidating other's feelings just because they don't feel the same or understand.

Those who can see how it could be offensive even if they themselves don't find it offensive aren't the ones who need to shut up and listen. Those who have joined the black people who find it offensive because they themselves also believe it's offensive aren't being anything (woke, etc). They don't need to shut up.

If you don't find it offensive or don't understand, it's fine but you'll be a special kind of ignorant if you really think that means others who do are on the wrong side. These are the ones who need to shut the hell up and go sit down somewhere until they learn to realise people are different and their feelings or lack of it don't invalidate others'.

Since black people all have different voices, obviously, I'll say that this black person doesn't need white people to shut up. Speak up if you find something wrong, just like I'll speak up for you if you need me to. Speak up anywhere you find anything wrong. If we're wrong, then we're wrong. We learn from it but never be silent. We're in it together.

Also what is racist about fluffy hair, my hair is curly (i'm not black)and after I wash it it can be fluffy.. It also forms locks if I don't wash it for a while. I think there's prejudice about curly hair full stop, look how many stars have hair which is like mine, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and many more, who get their hair tidied or straightened. See how many women on tv, news or actors have wild unruly curly hair, frizzy and fluffy. Not many at all.

Aaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhh !

Your title to this thread was definitely right OP.

winniestone37 · 10/08/2020 18:46

I agree, just not understanding your own privilege is a form of racism and white middle class people take huge offence at this concept. 🤷‍♀️

LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro · 10/08/2020 18:47

Those who throw out names (bear in mind are often those who are outraged when names are given to them) when people are doing what they believe to be right are often the ones who think they know it all with their 'I'm too cool to be woke' attitude, 'I'm too clever to be bothered and everyone who is bothered is wrong' - one of the most ignorant mindset of all times.

amispeakingenglish · 10/08/2020 18:52

Not saying that other things aren't important, of course lots of actual issues that should be rectified...... but fluffy hair.... I don't find it offensive if someone says my hair is fluffy, just a bit annoying because of what I said before. I used to get teased and called names at school too, but again sticks and stones........... My hair is wiry too so I used to get called things about that, but it's my hair, not my problem. It's the name callers problem.

Was this point in favour of people getting it or people not getting it? I couldn't tell where it stood because if it's in favour of people who don't understand how it can be offensive, then you've unknowingly written in favour of the opposite.

Your whole post is part of the point those who find it offensive or inappropriate are making and I'm not sure where to begin, like with the UHS Einstein one.

Ylvamoon · 10/08/2020 18:54

I don't get it. It's a children's book!
I often think racism is fueled by the need for pointing out differences, however insignificant. Then add a bit of ... " yeh but it's offensive!" and all hell breaks loose.

As this case illustrates because someONE is offended.
and yes I have experience with racism, but I am not walking around looking for potentially offensive material

LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro · 10/08/2020 18:58

Ah right. Just seen your next post. The 'you don't get it/find it offensive/inappropriate/cringy' camp. That's fine.

As for your post there, still don't know where to begin.

Choochoose · 10/08/2020 19:04

Agreed @LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro, great post.

Staffy1 · 10/08/2020 19:05

Doesn't this work both ways? Why can't people accept that others have different views and it doesn't make them wrong or mean they need to educate themselves. No one needs to shut the hell up, or to "get it". We all have different views, it doesn't mean one is wrong. I could say why don't you "get it", meaning my point or view.

LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro · 10/08/2020 19:13

What some people don't 'get' is why some people are offended/find it appropriate. Why do those who don't get it feel the need to shut those who are complaining down? It's not about "I think it's offensive"/ "I don't think it's offensive".

It's about "I think it's offensive"/ "Why do you think so? I don't see it that way, so stop being a snowflake".

"This is why I think it's offensive"/ "Well I still don't see it. You must be woke, professionally offended, finding offence where none is, etc".

Which then escalates to everyone shouting about their point.

That's the point.

LuvMyFluffyFrizzyBushySoftAfro · 10/08/2020 19:15

We all have different views, it doesn't mean one is wrong

You're preaching to the choir. I literally said that a few times. Perhaps tell that to your 'camp mates', maybe they'll listen to you.

PicsInRed · 10/08/2020 19:22

@alllthegearnoidea

*PicsinRed * Please tell me you're not comparing this book to actual horrific racists events?!! Get a life!

The publishers should not have to issue an apology because they have done NOTHING wrong!

I don't think they did it intentionally, but as we tell our small children, even if it's an accident you must apologise for the hurt, no matter how unintentional. On purposes get punished, but accidents still require an apology.

Neither, it was simply about hair. The discrimination about any curly hair.

Playmysong · 10/08/2020 19:42

@NellWilsonsWhiteHair

I’ve just been unable to quote *@Playmysong* ‘s post of 11.50 - wonder if this means it’s been deleted for the ridiculous ‘all lives matter’ part?

But I wanted to address the ‘surely you can find someone who is offended by everything!!’ argument. I actually don’t think it’s even slightly true (please step forward, those who find themselves offended by the Very Hungry Caterpillar...), but also I think it’s disingenuous and bloody lazy to say this is a reason to tolerate items where a number of people have said there’s an issue.

Clearly there is some sort of critical mass - one person finding something offensive doesn’t mean it can automatically be declared offensive and forbidden and got rid of. But really, that’s not even the point in this situation, where presumably some relatively reasonable people at Tesco sit down and go “oh shit yeah, maybe putting a picture of a brown-skinned mermaid with the caption ‘her hair is too fluffy’ wasn’t the brightest idea we’ve ever had, let’s switch to the one with the glittery tail”.
‘How many people does it take to prove this is offensive’ is only really relevant in this conversation if instead you’re more interested in preserving your right to offend others...

You have clearly stated that not all lives matter, it depends on what colour you are!! You think it is ridiculous (you’re statement not mine) to consider that All Lives Matter??? It is only acceptable to state that Black Lives Matter!!

So if I am white, no matter how good a person I am or how much I disagree with racism, I am a second class citizen according to you! However if I am black, a murderer and abuser, i’m more important than any white person, because of course I’m black so my life matters more than theirs.

Attitudes like yours causes resentment and bitterness. It also widens the racial divide. It encourages racism. My life should be defined by how I lead it, what things I do with my life, the kindness I show to others and generally (the cliche) how good a person I am. The person is what matters, not their colour or the gender they identify with!

As for the rest of the guff you have spouted, I don’t think there is any point in wasting my time answering it, as you have clearly said it is ridiculous to think that my life (and the rest of the white population’s lives) matters!

NellWilsonsWhiteHair 🤦‍♀️

It’s not been deleted. You can’t quote it because the post is already quoting a post.

PS. All lives do matter. HTH.

Grin

Well funnily enough the explanation that I can’t quote a post which already includes a quote did help, so thank you for that.

Telling me that all lives matter, not so much. I mean, obviously I agree all lives do matter, I just don’t agree it’s an appropriate response to BLM.

Doritoes · 10/08/2020 19:57

Asked this earlier in the the thread but no one responded so I'll ask again.

Why are you all assuming a picture with brown skin and straight black hair is depicting a black person? There are many other ethnicities that have brown skin and straight black hair as a characteristic that the mermaid could be representing.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 10/08/2020 20:07

don't find it offensive if someone says my hair is fluffy

Lol. You also said you are not black. Please stop.

We aren't. Black is the general term for non-white. However hair being "too fluffy" is a negative descriptor used particularly against black women. So it's most likely that the mermaid is black.

I think this thread shows how subconscious and pervasive racism can be.

queenbee72 · 10/08/2020 20:24

One dat (hopefully) many years from now this will be a funny, cute, inclusive t-shirt
However, in the world today where we have racism so ingrained in our world we don’t even realise it (as white people) then we need to be much more careful about how we portray/talk about people of colour.

The book (in amongst many other pages) may possibly be less of an issue (I’ll leave that to a black person to answer that- I’m not qualified) but on its own on a tshirt it is wholly inappropriate for the reasons stated above.

Playmysong · 10/08/2020 20:45

I don’t think this mermaid is Black. She has long straight hair, therefore probably Asian.

What???

I’m non white. I am not black. I’m mixed race. White mother and black father. Can’t say I appreciate my mother’s contribution to my conception, being completely dismissed.
