Which supporting character’s story would you like to hear?

We were having a drunken discussion last night about supporting characters in books, movies and games and wondered how the story would look from their point of view - like obvious Samwise Gamgee, or the potentially more mundane, poor butler from Tomb Raider that everyone trapped in the freezer. Who’s story do you want to hear?

Out of interest is it legal to write a book about a character in popular culture. For example, if Jane Eyre had been published 10 years ago and I wrote Wide Sargasso Sea, would that be an infringement?

Don’t worry - I don’t have the patience or skill to be a writer so I’m not planning on stealing your ideas 😉

I want to see the 1832 student uprising of Les Miserables written from the perspective of Grantaire.

Not unless the original story is out of copyright. That’s how Wicked was allowed to be written based on the Wizard of Oz, because the Wizard of Oz was written over 100 years ago so it’s out of copyright.

I'd like to know the back story of some of the minions of the baddies in James Bond films. How do you end up working in an under- mountain bunker or on a super villain's space station??

Good question! The mum in the tiger who came to tea, Rosaline in Romeo and Juliet, the grandma in Moana, Mrs Hudson in Sherlock Holmes

Mrs Dursley in Harry Potter

Always curious to see how she felt she and her family could abuse Harry like they did.

We already know she wanted to go to Hogwarts with Lily, but it would be nice to see how she reacted when baby Harry was put on the doorstep with Dumbledores letter

I always wondered why she took him in. Is it a ‘Snape’ kind is love - no real love for the boy but a love for her sister, despite the bitter jealously she felt. Or selfishness - whilst Harry was protected that protection extended to her and her family. Or something else. What exactly did she feel?
