As the mainstream media seems to be avoiding the topic.

Yes: I knew about the marches

No: I've not seen anything in the media

It was on the TV news yesterday. Terrestrial channel, can’t mind which.

OrigamiOwl · 09/08/2020 13:04

No, I wasn't aware.

mocktail · 09/08/2020 13:08

I was aware. It's not been ignored by the media but nor is it front-page news.

Personally with widespread redundancies, pay freezes and pay cuts in so many industries I think NHS workers may get less public support in this than they might otherwise.

SerenityNowwwww · 09/08/2020 13:10

I didn’t know and they weren’t far from me.

Likefootball · 09/08/2020 13:18

It was on ITV news, apparently a pay rise has been announced for doctors but not nurses.
These are actually separate negotiations.

Lockheart · 09/08/2020 13:19

Eh? It was on the BBC news.

Mamabeemer · 09/08/2020 13:20

I support our NHS and care workers massively but at a time where over half of people I know have lost their job or facing redundancies and pay cuts, I feel this is in bad taste at the moment.

Good luck to them though.

2CatsAndCounting · 09/08/2020 13:20

I think some of my lack of sympathy if that the NHS staff protesting were covered my a separate ph deal in 2018. Now I know many didn’t like the pay deal.

The pay rise some of the public sector got is not because of COVID Despite what people/politicians are saying. It was pretty much my standard pay rise. Okay larger than in the previous few years but it wasn’t for working during COVID or anything like that.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 09/08/2020 13:43

It was in the daily mail and/or the times

I read both so I don’t remember exactly

Noodledoodledoo · 09/08/2020 13:49

I didn't know about it but getting fed up of the calls for things to be equal. The public sector pay awards announced recently, sold as a reward for Covid, are the ones agreed earlier this year.

The nurses were awarded theirs a couple of years ago with a 3 year plan.

As always from a teaching perspective, they have announced the pay increase but not increased the school budgets it comes from so is either not likely to happen or will happen but will reduce budgets in schools for other things.

I agree with others at a time when they are a number of redundancies and job insecurity, and they are in the middle of a pay increase cycle it seems to be greedy - most nurses were paid overtime during the crisis something lots of other public sectors didnt get.

The guardian is mainstream media? What media outlets aren't reporting it?

Angelina82 · 09/08/2020 14:21

A friend of mine is an ambulance driver and even he thinks this it’s wrong for them to be demanding more money at this time. I think all that clapping has maybe gone to their heads a bit.

lockitdown · 09/08/2020 14:56

Nope.
And I'm a health professional.

nitgel · 09/08/2020 14:57

I only knew about the march as I was shopping and see the people. Had not heard of it before hand.

SerenityNowwwww · 09/08/2020 15:56

Apparently XR have been dying things red and making fountains green (Trafalgar Square?) today and that’s not really been reported much either.
