I've had quotes from £1,800 for a composite door (Solidor) to £7,000 for a designer timber door (London Door Co). It is literally a door. No side windows or anything. It's a mid-terrace house, 1920s, nothing special.

I despair. The cheaper door isn't even especially nice. I've looked on eBay out of desperation but there's only one door that's the right size and that's far too modern for our tastes.

Keeping our current door is not an option as it's falling apart.

Just looked at the quote and it’s not broken down so can’t say exactly, but a couple of years ago I had: 4x internal doors, front door, one room hardwood flooring laid, supply and fit of doors and all door furniture (I supplied flooring), for £2,000.

£7k is ridiculous. Have you tried online places like Door Superstore, etc? Just google the style you like – we’ve moved now and need a front door and I’ve costed up that a hardwood frosted double gazed Malton style with all furniture will cost £650, plus labour to fit. Find a local carpenter. Plus paint but I’d DIY that. Just had back door fitted as part of building works and did similar, Googled the style and went for one of the billion door supply sites, they’re all much of a muchness.

burritofan · 08/08/2020 19:04

Oh, and that costing up includes new frame and top light glazing.

TheBeesKnee · 08/08/2020 19:07

burritofan

Can I ask where you are? I'm in London so expect a bit of an inflation but this is ridiculous.

£800 for a composite door. We're in the north west though.

Redglitter · 08/08/2020 19:10

I just ordered a composite door this week. Will ve just under £1k including fitting

timesareachanging · 08/08/2020 19:12

Do you know a joiner?

If so, they can normally do the job for you.

JacobReesMogadishu · 08/08/2020 19:14

£1400 for a solidor inc fitting, this also included a glazed panel/window above the actual door.. was a year ago. Midlands. Think Solidor have a network of self employed fitters who do other stuff as well as the door fitting.. so I suspect they buy the door and put their own price/mark up on the fitting.

Cuddling57 · 08/08/2020 19:15

I've just had a Solidor fitted and I love it.
I think it was around £1600 which included a small side window. We had other work done too but I got separate prices.
Get a few quotes. Even though one guy told us we wouldn't get cheaper but we did a bit.

ShawshanksRedemption · 08/08/2020 19:15

Googling gives you lots of other cheaper options. However, how much on the quote is the door, and how much is labour, removal etc and then VAT?

formerbabe · 08/08/2020 19:15

I think ours was £1500.

estatenonestate · 08/08/2020 19:15

1500 for solidor door with side panel. Sold & fitted by local company . South coast

anxiousstanley · 08/08/2020 19:16

Try Turmacher. They have an offer on at the moment.

TimeTruthandHearts · 08/08/2020 19:21

We budgeted £750 about four years ago for new door, furniture and glazed panel above.

Oh how we laughed when the quotes came in Hmm.

We decided not to pay the 1.5k - 3k plus and instead bought the door/furniture ourselves directly from a local timber merchants and found a recently retired friend of friend joiner to fit. Cost about £800 all in.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 08/08/2020 19:23

Just short of 1k

RedPanda2 · 08/08/2020 19:28

As the co owner of a joinery company we've done 4 between 1,500 and 2,000 depending on timber..that includes frame. Not London though

Binterested · 08/08/2020 19:30

Just paid 4K for new Georgian panelled door plus new frame and door step plus locks, fitting and painting. In C London hence price. I’m very happy with the job.

West 4 Joinery.

Trisolaris · 08/08/2020 19:37

I paid 4K for 4 windows and a door. I believe the door was 1800 of that. Also London. 24 months interest free with safestyle.

Beautiful3 · 08/08/2020 19:38

Composite door cost us £1300. It's a nice door with my choice of glass, and in an expensive colour.

passthemustard · 08/08/2020 19:40

Last year I paid £1600 (can't remember if that was plus or including vat though) for a nice composite door and a custom piece of glass in the space above. Im south west and I did have 10 new windows at the same time.

Feellikedancingyeah · 08/08/2020 19:41

£850 fully fitted composite door .

Cuddling57 · 08/08/2020 19:46

Just popped back on to say if you have a solidor with ultion lock and keys you can register your key number with Ultion. All your keys have the same Id number. Register with your email address and no one will ever be able to get a copy until you approve it. Great service.

burritofan · 08/08/2020 19:49

I’m in that London; the £2k was Brighton though so also ridiculous prices.

FlyingPandas · 08/08/2020 19:52

£3.5k for a painted wooden door and full length glass panels each side, plus frame etc. Not London but affluent part of SE.

Tbh it is one of my biggest regrets in terms of big purchases from our house project. I would never buy a wooden front door again. The frame and doorstep are chipped to buggery and it looks awful close up, even though I do love the style and overall look of the door.

If I could go back and do it again I’d have got the same colour and style of door but in composite, would probably have paid around £1.5k and it would have looked a lot nicer / been a lot more robust five years on.

£7k is ridiculous though even for London.

Pepperwand · 08/08/2020 20:01

£1400 for a solidor done last year, in SE but not London.

HelloChompy · 08/08/2020 20:06

I think around £800 for a composite door (including fitting) about 8 years ago. We're in the Midlands.
