to expect household to use drinking vessels more than once?

Our dishwasher has broken, which has reminded me of differences of opinion within the household about how often drinking glasses can be used.

Me: if it's had water in it, that's your glass for the day. You can even, shock, have orange juice in it, and rinse it before using it for tap water

Others: that is unhygienic and I will use a new glass for every single drink I have. In hot weather that can up be up to six per day. Also, add in different mugs for each cup of herbal tea etc.

I think the hygiene claim is actually because they can't be bothered to keep track of a glass. (We have different coloured and styles of glass so there are ways to do this.)

And certainly I note that hygiene issues such as dirty toilets and manky sinks don't seem to bother them in the slightest.

The multiple glass users are also big on saving the planet but don't seem to mind having the dishwasher running (they use 70 degree washes) what feels like all the time, the top half filled with all these glasses.

Or am I being unreasonable?

On another note, watching young teens "learn" to wash up by hand has been amusing! Smile

Nope YANBU..

If hygiene is such a problem then they can hand wash their mug or glass before re-using it.

I would leave one mug and one glass for each person, and put all the others elsewhere :D

EatsShootsAndRuns · 08/08/2020 14:44

I'd hide all but 1 glass and 1 cup each. You have to reuse then!

I have in the past taken literally all the cups away so they had to use their cupped hands to get water. It worked and if they get a bit liberal with cup use I only have to remind them of the cupless day and they are back on track again. It’s legendary in our house - the kids still laugh about it.

RandomTree · 08/08/2020 14:52

YANBU

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/08/2020 14:58

We have these amazing invention called running water and a cloth where you can rinse a cup between uses. Even my 7yo can manage it. It's astonishing.

ZigZagPlant · 08/08/2020 14:59

I’m with you. I’ll swill my mug all day. Me and DH often don’t know who’s glass is who’s and just use the one left on the draining board!

MulberryPeony · 08/08/2020 15:00

YANBU. However when in-laws visit for the day they seem to think we need more cups as they use every.single.one

This is outstanding commitment. I can't wait to replicate this when my children are older and I have shudder two teenage girls in the house.
muckandnettles · 08/08/2020 15:03

Totally with you on this one, op. My family will make a hot drink, then if they want another identical hot drink will use a new mug! I've given up on that one now.

user1294625849274 · 08/08/2020 15:03

I dunno, but your talk of drinking vessels brought to mind images of a Tudor court so I am slightly disappointed with your op...

Are they drinking enough if they only go through six vessels on a hot day?

Mumdiva99 · 08/08/2020 15:06

I gave my kids a glass each and glass paint. They now know whose glass is whose....It's not perfect but has helped....

spinqueen50 · 08/08/2020 15:07

Get them all Chillis bottles or similar. Worked in our house after the teens used to literally have a mouthful of water from a glass and put it straight in the dishwater. Repeat about 6 times a day until someone goes 'where are all the clean glasses??'

Nacreous · 08/08/2020 15:07

I'm halfway between these two attitudes.

If I am having multiple cups of tea on the trot then I would use the same mug. If I decided I wanted another mug and my mug was upstairs I would use a different mug, or if I had popped out for a walk or whatever so it had been sitting round with dregs in. Similar attitude with cups really.

In practice that means I use about 4 drinking vessels a day and the top of the dishwasher fills up broadly in line with the bottom. When I worked in an office rather than from home it would be a mug from the morning and a glass from the evening.

dementedma · 08/08/2020 15:10

I just swill, rinse, reuse. Same mug or glass

Nottherealslimshady · 08/08/2020 15:13

I dont like reusing a glass throughout the day, if I needed more to drink during a meal the I'd use the same glass but not if I needed another drink hours later. I tend to use bottles because it's the openness of a glass that feels unhygienic to me

unmarkedbythat · 08/08/2020 15:14

They can't just wash it under the tap quickly each time they're making a new drink?

honeygirlz · 08/08/2020 15:18

YANBU. I like to give a quick rinse before next use but that takes a 2 second swish.

I actually prefer water bottles now, especially ones that keep your drink cold for 12+ hours. They get a hot soapy wash every 2-3 days (we don’t have a dishwasher).

Elieza · 08/08/2020 15:19

I sometimes use the same coffee cup for two days with a swirl round of boiling water from the kettle to rinse inside and the lip on the side I drink (multiple drinks) from per day in between.

I also use said mug for water if I want to. But I’m a bit of a minger!

And my dishwasher is now bust too, but that’s a new development!

Holothane · 08/08/2020 15:21

We use one mug a day, I’ve loads to choose from but stick to one a day today it’s my retro Liverpool mug.

chubbyhotchoc · 08/08/2020 15:35

Same issue here. Driving
Me mad

ThisLittleLady · 08/08/2020 15:36

YABU. if you’ve not used used every cup pot pan and bowl in the house just to cover one days worth of liquids then you’re not doing it right. Wink

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/08/2020 15:42

I use one coffee cup all day, and one glass for squash (in fact the glass is often used for more than one day Blush). Ds1 often uses his chillis bottle for water. And ds2 I frequently have to nag to drink enough..

Incrediblytired · 08/08/2020 15:43

What? Your glass for the day? Why wouldn’t you have a clean glass a couple of hours later?

This is beyond me. I’ve got a cupboard full of glasses and I’ll just grab one, I’m not washing up all the time.

Do you have one plate for the day too? Or just glasses?

Redcrayons · 08/08/2020 15:46

Guilty as charged. I use a clean one every time, mugs too. I am, however, the main washer upper so not making work for anyone else.
