to expect household to use drinking vessels more than once?

Our dishwasher has broken, which has reminded me of differences of opinion within the household about how often drinking glasses can be used.

Me: if it's had water in it, that's your glass for the day. You can even, shock, have orange juice in it, and rinse it before using it for tap water

Others: that is unhygienic and I will use a new glass for every single drink I have. In hot weather that can up be up to six per day. Also, add in different mugs for each cup of herbal tea etc.

I think the hygiene claim is actually because they can't be bothered to keep track of a glass. (We have different coloured and styles of glass so there are ways to do this.)

And certainly I note that hygiene issues such as dirty toilets and manky sinks don't seem to bother them in the slightest.

The multiple glass users are also big on saving the planet but don't seem to mind having the dishwasher running (they use 70 degree washes) what feels like all the time, the top half filled with all these glasses.

Or am I being unreasonable?

On another note, watching young teens "learn" to wash up by hand has been amusing! Smile

We all have our own mugs which we use all day, we just rinse out as necessary.

lyralalala · 08/08/2020 17:44

I got so sick of this last year that we all have 2 cups and 2 glasses each. They can rinse them if they use them multiple times a day. That said it got so bad here that they also have 2 plates and 2 bowls each as well.

After 17 glasses and 12 plates coming out of the teens rooms I just had enough.

@ClementineWoolysocks

I prefer a clean cup every time I make tea, I think the same glass/mug all day is ick.
It's ick if you take milk and or sugar, or leave an inch in the bottom to grow skin. Sets my teeth on edge when people leave half an inch or two in the mug. If you rinse it as soon as you finish it's ok.

I drink black coffee, so no milk or sugar to worry about.

Hollywhiskey · 08/08/2020 18:27

Do people not wash their mugs and cups after use anyway? I would go spare if it was getting left next to the sink for me to deal with. Surely you have to return to the kitchen to get a new drink anyway and reusing the cup/glass saves on drying up.

WanderingMilly · 08/08/2020 18:28

Not for me.
I have a clean glass, or clean mug, for every single drink I have. And for guests and/or family (depending on who's here). Wouldn't dream of using them again and again, how unhygienic.
And no, we don't have a dishwasher and yes, I do wash them all up (properly, with plenty of hot water and wash-up liquid, not a rinse) myself...

But each to their own. If you wish to do it differently, fine....

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/08/2020 18:40

Either is fine as long as they wash their vessels?

AbsentmindedWoman · 08/08/2020 18:43

@ElleEmDee

I have in the past taken literally all the cups away so they had to use their cupped hands to get water. It worked and if they get a bit liberal with cup use I only have to remind them of the cupless day and they are back on track again. It’s legendary in our house - the kids still laugh about it.
This made me laugh Grin
Couchbettato · 08/08/2020 18:48

When we moved into this house I bought 6 new glasses. 4 broke, so now DH and I literally hand wash our glass between uses. That's just our life, and I'm kind of glad for it because it's less pots to wash. It doesn't need washing between uses for water.

largeprintagathachristie · 08/08/2020 18:50

I'm not sure why I used the word "vessels"!

I think my first bash at a subject line looked as though as I was talking about the spectacles kind of glasses rather than drinking glasses.

Your house your call but I always use a clean cup/glass/vessel for every drink

Ishihtzuknot · 08/08/2020 19:39

We always reuse the same cup through the day for cold drinks as we drink a lot (water and juice not alcohol Grin ) there’s no harm in it and I don’t have the time to faff around washing 10+ glasses a day.

rottiemum88 · 08/08/2020 19:42

Ooh I'm not sure on this one...

To be honest I do like a fresh glass each time, but I only drink from a glass at the table with a meal. I also have a fresh cup for each tea/coffee, but tend to have 1-2 max per day. For water that I drink throughout the day I use my Chillys bottle

melj1213 · 08/08/2020 19:44

If allowed to, DD would use every cup, mug, glass and wine glass I own for fresh drinks in a day and as we dont have a dishwasher I was the one washing them up.

So now she gets one glass in a morning and that is the only one she uses for the day, since she mostly only drinks water/squash then she just rinses it out between drinks and it's not killed her yet, but it has saved on my hot water bill and washing up time.

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/08/2020 19:44

Hahaha I love this! We used to have this argument daily! Now they all get given a glass/cup/beaker for the day and a place their one is kept when not in use... they can rinse between diff drinks if they want to!

BreconBeBuggered · 08/08/2020 19:52

No, YANBU at all. We don't have a dishwasher and it drives me mad to have everything washed, turn my back for a short while then come back to find the washing up bowl full of mugs and glasses. Even worse with them all at home is to find multiple cups sitting on desks and not a single one left in the kitchen. DH is weird about not having more things than we need, so it doesn't take long for this scenario to come about. My kitchen is sooooo tidy on the days they're all out.
