to expect household to use drinking vessels more than once?

Our dishwasher has broken, which has reminded me of differences of opinion within the household about how often drinking glasses can be used.

Me: if it's had water in it, that's your glass for the day. You can even, shock, have orange juice in it, and rinse it before using it for tap water

Others: that is unhygienic and I will use a new glass for every single drink I have. In hot weather that can up be up to six per day. Also, add in different mugs for each cup of herbal tea etc.

I think the hygiene claim is actually because they can't be bothered to keep track of a glass. (We have different coloured and styles of glass so there are ways to do this.)

And certainly I note that hygiene issues such as dirty toilets and manky sinks don't seem to bother them in the slightest.

The multiple glass users are also big on saving the planet but don't seem to mind having the dishwasher running (they use 70 degree washes) what feels like all the time, the top half filled with all these glasses.

Or am I being unreasonable?

On another note, watching young teens "learn" to wash up by hand has been amusing! Smile

It's not the hill I'm going to die on. Or maybe it will be.
I'M SO SURE I'M RIGHT.
Drives me mad.

Thanks all for your views thus far. I'm not trying to get anyone to drink less. Just not use one glass, drink tap water standing at the sink, abandon that glass, use a new one 30 minutes later and repeat ad infinitim.

We are somewhere in the middle to be fair. We usually seem to change mug or glass if the contents change. So tea mug will be re used over And over but switch to coffee and a new mug is used and the old put in the dishwasher. Water glasses for all four are used one a day and just reused.

pinkbalconyrailing · 08/08/2020 15:59

yanbu

we have mug savers in this house despite having a dishwasher. but I have relatives who use a new cup/glas/mug for every drink they are having.

dish wasching duty for the worst offender(s) it is then.

picklemewalnuts · 08/08/2020 16:10

Get a sharpie. Name the mugs and glasses.

DollyDoneMore · 08/08/2020 16:22

@Nottherealslimshady

I dont like reusing a glass throughout the day, if I needed more to drink during a meal the I'd use the same glass but not if I needed another drink hours later. I tend to use bottles because it's the openness of a glass that feels unhygienic to me
Whaaaat?

The ‘openness’ of a glass?! What badness is going to come out of the air and settle on your glass that couldn’t come out of the air and settle on your eyelids or face or hands?

Some of you lot are bonkers.

Reuse a glass if it’s having the same drink in it. Reuse a mug if it’s having the same hot drink in it but maybe swill it round with water first.

Mug looking a bit manky from multiple cups of tea? Get a clean one.

Glass just had orange juice in it and now you want milk? Get a clean one.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/08/2020 16:29

I’ll use the same glass most of the day (I do at work), but for mugs....I certainly don’t want to be using the same mug for my bedtime brew that I used at 5.30am. I probably use three mugs during the day.

66redballons · 08/08/2020 16:32

Oh I thought my dh had started this to prove I was being totally UR today !!
I said the same thing .... 12 glasses !!!! By the afternoon all piled in and near the dishwasher.
Watching for updates Smile

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/08/2020 16:33

I’m halfway between as well. I use different mugs for morning tea and afternoon tea. However, I usually use one drinking glass for water all day, but if it gets particularly smudged throughout the day, would I change it in evening.

Purpleartichoke · 08/08/2020 16:35

We each get a sports bottle for the day for water. They even come to the table at regular family only meals. Glasses are allowed for other beverages, but their consumption is rare so not a big washing issue.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 08/08/2020 16:40

We use 1 water bottle throughout the day and wash it at night, we only change if we are changing drinks but ad we don't drink hot drinks this isn't too much of a problem for us.
I have glasses and mugs in the house for guests and I don't mind how many they use but it is normally only one per visit

courtwood · 08/08/2020 16:44

My dishwasher broke down at start of lockdown, after a week of constantly washing must and glasses I bought six different coloured mugs , everyone picked a colour and that was their mug for hot drinks, water ,juice etc. Worked a treat until the dishwasher was repaired.

courtwood · 08/08/2020 16:45

*mugs not must

“Get a sharpie. Name the mugs and glasses”

Im obviously having a slow brain day. My first thought in respond to this was “don’t you think I’ve got better things to do than think up names for all my mugs and glasses?”

corythatwas · 08/08/2020 16:47

4 family members having 6 drinks a day (easily done in this weather)- that's 24 glasses right there. Not sure how many glasses and mugs we own, but 24 dirty glasses piling up on the sideboard would be a depressing sight. Compromise seems good to me: reuse some glasses, rinse others out, no there is nothing unhygienic in the air that would make an open glass dangerous- the unhygienic bit comes from contact with the mouth.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 08/08/2020 16:59

Yanbu

Definitely glass for the day and wash it out if needs be!

Think of the environment if nothing else, with the dishwasher going so much.

Oysterbabe · 08/08/2020 17:03

1 glass and 1 mug for the day. We would use every single drinking vessel every day otherwise and I only want to put the dishwasher on once. I also think a fresh one each time is completely unnecessary. My MIL scoops up and washes anything you put down for even a second.

bridgetreilly · 08/08/2020 17:05

I would not re-use an orange juice glass all day, tbh. I like the kind with bits in and once they're stuck on it needs a proper wash, not just a rinse. But I do indeed reuse mugs and glasses for water and so on. One per day is about normal for me.

bridgetreilly · 08/08/2020 17:08

don’t you think I’ve got better things to do than think up names for all my mugs and glasses?

That's what the baby name forum is for. From now on I shall assume that all posters are secretly asking for name suggestions for their drinking vessels.

tabulahrasa · 08/08/2020 17:10

Surely they can use as many as they want... as long as they wash them and don’t leave them for someone else to wash?...

picklemewalnuts · 08/08/2020 17:20

I'm not keen on the bottles idea- especially around mealtimes. The mouthpiece must get a bit grim, especially plastic.

We each have our own glass, and there are some spares. They last until they look past it- orange juice means pretty much straight away, water means indefinitely.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 08/08/2020 17:21

I have 1 tea and 1 coffee mug per day and 1 or 2 glasses depending on if I drink some squash. It's such a waste to use a clean one each time. My parents in law do this and you're constantly having to wash up cos they don't own many mugs and if you put a half finished cup of tea down for more than 60 seconds it's been whisked off to the washing up bowl. Drives me potty.
Can you buy your teens some water bottles, that might help the glass use if not the mugs. I'd be tempted to do as above and give them each 1 mug, 1 glass, 1 plate, etc until they get the idea.

NiceGerbil · 08/08/2020 17:30

I had no idea that anyone had a fresh glass/ cup for every drink!

Learn something every day.

ClementineWoolysocks · 08/08/2020 17:32

I prefer a clean cup every time I make tea, I think the same glass/mug all day is ick.

FunTimes2020 · 08/08/2020 17:33

@ElleEmDee

I have in the past taken literally all the cups away so they had to use their cupped hands to get water. It worked and if they get a bit liberal with cup use I only have to remind them of the cupless day and they are back on track again. It’s legendary in our house - the kids still laugh about it.
That's so funny, and brilliant! Grin
