Posting for traffic:

Hosting my first bbq on Sunday, I need to go out tomorrow and get all the food. Can anyone help me with recipes or items that are must haves. Thanks Grin

We had one last weekend. My husband made chicken satay, chicken and chorizo skewers, halloumi skewers with quince marinade, sticky ribs and somewhat reluctantly, sausages! He always tries to steer clear of burgers and sausages tbh.

He did loads of nice side dishes too - Caprese salad, Delia's rice salad, creamed corn and a quinoa salad with feta.

LakieLady · 07/08/2020 19:20

If you've got a fish wholesaler anywhere nearby, you can get shelled king prawns for a few quid for a big bag. Let them thaw and then marinade them for a few hours in the following:

light soy sauce
dry sherry
lime juice
grated fresh ginger
garlic
a generous shake of tabasco

Bloody delicious and always get rave reviews when I have a barbecue.

Chicken tikka is easy, too. Tesco do a mix of tikka spice (or used to) and all you do is stir it into yogurt, then coat the chicken pieces in it, leave them in the fridge and chuck them on the barbie. I used to do it with chunks of chicken breast and cook them on skewers, but I'm posh like that. At least until the 2nd G&T.

And really good butcher's sausages always go down well.

I could also give you my recipe for Killer Pimms, but the Health & Safety Executive have expressed concerns following my last barbie.

One friend had to go to minor injuries, having failed to stop at the bottom of the drive and slammed into a tree across the road (he was on foot, not driving) and another fell down my front steps and broke a wrist, but was too pissed to realise he'd hurt himself until the following morning.

And someone took a tumble in the bathroom and fell against the pipe that takes water to the cistern, causing a leak.

Apart from that, I think everyone had a good time. Grin

I really want that Pimms recipe, Lakielady! Grin

The best potato salad of course! Have fun

@Slippy78

It's to much faffing about doing multiple meats, I just chuck a lamb or half a pig on the spit and then come back a few hours later when it's ready.
Only on MN 😹
ThatDreamSheep · 07/08/2020 19:26

Sausages and burgers. Pulled pork. Big mushrooms. Halloumi. (then can make a variety of burgers using that). Corn on the cobs(you can get some from Aldi or Tescos that you microwave then chuck them on just to chargirll them). Also pineapple on the barbecue is delicious.

KatherineJaneway · 07/08/2020 19:29

Plenty of sides is the key. Coleslaw, potato salad, buffalo mozzarella with beef steak tomatoes (salt and basil), dips etc.

Then the usual suspects.

Elouera · 07/08/2020 19:29

I always do some veg on the BBQ and salads, along with the meats:

  • fresh corn and scrubbed sweet potatoes wrapped in foil. I usually use a spray oil or butter on the foil beforehand
  • pineapple is nice on the BBQ
  • my go to HOT summer day salad is watermelon salad. Chop watermelon into 1-2cm cubes, add raw green beans cut into 1cm pieces, add grilled halloumi chopped then toasted pine nuts. Nothing more. Abdsolutely delicious and cooling in the heat!

I hope the guest list is only from one other household.

GameSetMatch · 07/08/2020 19:31

Salads

Prawns or langoustines marinaded in garlic/lemon
Scallops

Selection of condiments and dressings

Yellowcar2 · 07/08/2020 19:33

Halloumi. Bbqs are always better with halloumi Smile

MissConductUS · 07/08/2020 19:35

Boneless chicken breasts in a teriyaki marinade are a big hit at our house.

AnneBullen · 07/08/2020 19:36

My go to list
Sausages
Burgers
Halloumi and veg kebabs
Onions
Burger cheese
Buns
Crisps and dips and crudités
Potato salad
Corn on the cob
Mozzarella, avocado and tomato salad
Drinks
Pud

Enjoy!! Remember ketchup, mayo and mustard!

TheAquaticDuchess · 07/08/2020 19:37

Potato salad (new potatoes, mayo, lemon, spring onions, parsley)

Corn on the cob

Portobello mushrooms for grilling

Veggie burgers and sausages for the veggies if you have any coming

Green salad (spinach, baby gem lettuce, cucumber, avocado, spring onions, croutons, dressing - or make your own vinaigrette)

Baked potatoes

Pasta salad (conchigle, tomatoes, basil, pine nuts, mayo, asparagus tips, baby broccoli, can add Parmesan or leave it vegan)

For dessert, an ice cream bar with different toppings and sauces is always fun. For the adults how about something like a chocolate ganache tart - you can make the crust from Bourbon biscuits and butter then a lovely filling of coconut cream (or regular - I use coconut cos I’m vegan and I love the flavour), dark chocolate and a little golden syrup. There are lots of recipes for ganache online. You can add raspberries or any other fruit you like. It takes no baking and just chills in the fridge so it’s dead simple.

Grin again, only on MN.

SquigglePigs · 07/08/2020 19:39

I love a bowl of buttery new potatoes to balance all the meat. Or potato salad if you don't want to worry about them being warm in time.

As a general rule just burgers and sausages is a bit dull. There's loads of super ambitious things you could do but marinated chicken is an easy one. Either drumsticks you cook in the oven first and finish on the BBQ or mini fillets you can cook straight on the grill. Another option is skewers with chicken and peppers/onion/cherry tomatoes .

I second the earlier suggestion of halloumi - nice for variety and easy to cook.

Thin steaks work fantastically too!

ouch321 · 07/08/2020 19:41

Sausages
Burgers
Veggie burgers
Burger baps
Hot dog buns
Ketchup
Potato salad
Water
Fizzy drinks

butterry · 07/08/2020 19:42

I like marinated chicken thighs and steak for adults, sausages in buns a must for kids. Bbq is all about the sides and relishes for me. Need a green salad, creamy potato or a herby rice salad then corn on the cob and asparagus done on the bbq, portobello mushrooms also delicious. Never done it but have heard of wrapping banana up in foil with chocolate chunks and marshmallows and letting it all melt on the barbecue, maybe serve with ice cream? To be honest with the kids I think they would be happy with ice lollies!

Sh05 · 07/08/2020 19:47

Wow some really great suggestions here!
Ours is always drumsticks, home made lamb burgers, pasta salad, cucumber raita and a green salad.
Quite boring in comparison to other pps.
oh and towards the end I wrap baby potatoes in foil and throw them into the coal.

letsmaketea · 07/08/2020 19:48

Some brilliant ideas here!

Things we do that haven't been mentioned: grated carrot and beetroot with a splash of balsamic, and roasted mediterranean vegetables as side dishes.

SerenityNowwwww · 07/08/2020 19:50

GRILLED HALLOUMI!!!!!!! 😋 potato salad. Bread, crispy green salad. Tomato, olive and cucumber salad.

When can I be expected?

mummycanihaveadrink · 07/08/2020 19:50

This all sounds amazing 🤤

Katjolo · 07/08/2020 19:51

Halloumi and veg kebabs, lamb koftas with tzatziki and pitta, jerk chicken thighs or drumsticks, potatoe salad, coleslaw, green salad, pasta salad, corn on the cob... yum.

Ice cream and strawberries for dessert.

Pimms, prosecco, elderflower mocktails and cider.

Now I'm hungry!

SerenityNowwwww · 07/08/2020 19:52

Yes definitely halloumi. But so very few people like it so just put it aside for me...
