Dryrobes

AIBU to ask if anyone has a Dryrobe and if so, are they worth the money? Really want one but at £130 I'm struggling to justify the expense.

(Sorry for the boring AIBU!)

In my day we sewed two or three old bath towels together and called it good. I can’t imagine paying £130 for one!

Finfintytint · 08/08/2020 19:28

Ha ha MaskingForIt...same breed!

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2020 19:45

I've brought ds a changing robe from osprey that has a waterproof bit to keep car seats dry. And the cleverest but is it's in a self contained bag that is the waterproof bit Grin

He's a competitive swimmer and they also will have no changing facilities when they return next week.

I have considered a dry robe for him if we are still exiting wet in winter-
!

ScrapThatThen · 08/08/2020 19:54

I have a Moonwrap (alternative brand to dryrobe). Does the job nicely and a bit cheaper.

FourDecades · 08/08/2020 20:05

Amazon have some smallest ones for £75 currently

TheoneandObi · 08/08/2020 20:49

Near beach living Cornish girl here, and I don't get them at all! Loads of people have them. They're ugly, bulky and expensive imo. . I swim a lot. And manage with a hamman towel (very packable) and a down jacket if it's chilly.

myworkingtitle · 08/08/2020 20:53

Loads of people have them here (that & a VW van - south west coast!). I’m dubious about the price tag. DH tried to make his own out of waxed cotton & a fleece & it is SO unwieldy that the dry robes still look appealing - back to the drawing board Grin

cjpark · 08/08/2020 20:55

I have one that I share with my teenage son! I do alot of sea swimming so its ideal in the morning to pop down to the beach with my swimmers on underneath. DS uses it post surfing.

There's a local company to me who does a similar thing to dryrobe, but he's sold out due to loads of people sea swimming as the pools are closed.

Scattyhattie · 09/08/2020 00:16

Would they get all soggy inside over wetsuit?

My friend spends the day in a wetsuit in & out of a pool, so while he doesn't also have to deal with the elements sitting around while wet he quickly gets cold. Bit expensive to try in case repeated use over day wreaked it.

WonderWebbs · 09/08/2020 00:32

Also handy for winter sports after races. I can imagine that they would be good for dog walking and on the beach in the cooler months.

notangelinajolie · 09/08/2020 00:35

I have absolutely no idea what a dryrobe is but it sounds good so I'm off to Google.

Wifeofbikerviking · 09/08/2020 00:41

Yes absolutely. Mines for surfing and has made cold winter surfing 100% easier coming out the water

CMOTDibbler · 09/08/2020 07:47

@Scattyhattie they were designed exactly for being in and out of the water. The lining is fleece so it doesn't go heavy and soggy

BiddyPop · 09/08/2020 10:13

DH bought me one for my birthday last year, I use it for sea swimming but dd also uses it for sea swimming, after sailing over wet gear, throwing on after hockey matches, and as a rug on the couch watching movies. So it's usually a hunt to try and find it when I want it....

I also have a waterproof cover that goes over a front seat of the car, I usually have it on the passenger seat for dd, but that's also very useful if you have a lot of water stuff going on in your house, for people who are still damp, have dripping hair, or especially now when changing rooms are not available so we've been tending to come home wet and shower/change what home.

BiddyPop · 09/08/2020 10:14

Oh, I forgot the after surfing use as well ...

Newnamenewopenme · 12/08/2020 08:39

Mines from zone 3. It’s a god send after outdoor swimming, I take my wetsuit off and then put it over my tri suit until I get home and have a shower so that I don’t get pond on the rest of my clothes.

Rshard · 12/08/2020 08:43

Superb buy. I was a bit Hmm at dh when he bought one for dd but she’s more than had her money’s worth out of it. She takes it to swimming galas (often cool in sports halls), open water swimming and if we go to the coast. DD’s lives in a blue Ikea bag.

emmathedilemma · 12/08/2020 08:48

Rat Race currently have them on offer at £65 instead of £130. If you regularly open water swim or live by the beach then they're definitely worth it.

Sailingblue · 12/08/2020 08:56

Depends what you’re going to use them for. I got a fairly basic towel poncho for use after baby swimming and it was a game changer. It just made life so much easier.

AriettyHomily · 12/08/2020 09:01

If you swim outdoors they are absolutely fantastic and well worth the money.

AlwaysLatte · 12/08/2020 09:07

I bought micro fibre ponchos instead for everyone recently, they are great as they fold up small enough to put in backpack and dry quickly too. We've used them loads for river and sea swimming recently.

Fluffyfluffy8 · 12/08/2020 09:13

Another “get one” vote.

Mine was bought for me and I’m a size 8/10 and 5’4 and was bought a medium. It’s massive and I sort of wish I had the small as it’s difficult to carry around / take places, but I am really glad I’ve got it overall.

I swim in the winter and was wearing it walking home and someone said “I love your coat, where’s it from?” - I always feel like an odd wizard in it too, but apparently it looked like an actual coat Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 12/08/2020 09:47

You can fold up your dryrobe and shove it inside it's own hood, if that helps, so no need to drop 30 QUID Shock on a compression bag.
Just lay it out flat, fold one side in on itself, then the other side, then roll up and tuck inside the hood.
If anyone understands what I mean from that description, you deserve a medal.

Loftyswops988 · 12/08/2020 09:48

They are definitely worth the money!!
