Aibu to expect a refund for (suspected) unauthentic does get purse?

I bid on and won a mulberry purse on eBay item arrived- it was listed as used. This purse did not look used. It looked brand new! Not a single mark, smelled new and still had a piece of cardboard in one of the flaps.
Contacted seller, expressed my concern that it was not used and therefore the price did not reflect a genuine new item. Asked her to confirm is it was authentic. She did.

Took my new purse our shipping today- went into 2 shops and purchased items. I noticed some scuffing and wear and tear in the corners. This does not seem to be standard of the quality on mulberry. Messaged seller with pictures and said that this confirmed to me that item was not authentic and request I return purse for a refund.

Seller has refused and stated that I have not taken care of the purse and they will not be giving me a Refund. I’ve had the purse 2 days, been in 2 shops and stored it in my handbag. I’d hardly say that is not caring for the product.

Aibu?
Yes- you are BU and should not expect a refund for a purse you have used (for 2 days)
No- you are NBU the purse it clearly not authentic and seller should accept return/ refund.

I’ve attached pictures of the damage.

I've got a Mulberry handbag dh bought me second hand. It was immaculate when i got it and came with dust bag with the Mulberry logo.

I've had it 8 years and it looks better than your purse in the pics! I would definitely say it isn't authentic because I have not treated the handbag well.

ireallyamthewalrus · 05/08/2020 23:06

I wouldn’t waste your time and money on authenticity checks nor would I chalk it up to experience. Do as others have said and raise a dispute via eBay saying it’s not authentic. If the seller believes it is she can ask you to return it for a refund.

Serialcatmum · 05/08/2020 23:10

Hi,

I have opened up a dispute. Seller has refused the refund and has said that eBay will now have to decide. Apparently eBay won’t even look at the dispute until the 14th and usually ask for authenticity report.

It’s £7.50 for them to confirm either way but I imagine I’d need to pay extra to get an actually report I can submit.

Ok for those that have asked. The inking around the bow is not Mulberry standard...there is too much over spill which the inker would have been asked to remove. Also the cotton ends are fraying meaning that a process known as "burn back" has not been done. Again this would have been picked up by a member of the quality team, both before the purse had left the production line (all items are 100%inspected before packing), and before it left the warehouse. Having looked a the image with the bow more carefully it also appears that the grain on the bow is heavier that that of the main body of the purse, although that may be the camera angle so I cannot be 100% sure.

Ebay business seller here ( different category ) there is no £7.50 charge - no idea where that came from. Main point is you have raised a case against this seller. Ebay will guide you if you need to provide anything. Contact with the seller should be done through the case now - via send a message option within it. You should get a full refund including fees/postage. Do not take a part payment.

I hope you get sorted, this happened to me a few years ago with a 'Mulberry' purse. It was obvious when it came it was (albeit very good) fake.
The seller tried to show a receipt and it was a Mulberry receipt but could have been for anything as it didn't specify product or date. I had to open a dispute and did wonder which way it would go but happened to be looking through their profile and found that they had recently purchased the purse from another seller on ebay so I took screenshots and ebay quickly got me my money back.
I don't know if they knew it was a fake and wanted to sell it on at a profit or if they had been duped too so sold it on quickly. I would never buy anything like that again on Ebay!

loobyloo1234 · 06/08/2020 16:52

Eurgh. These people that sell fakes and stick to their guns until the bitter end. Shameful

I bought some Benefit Eye Cream on ebay. All positive feedback. The pot came and the consistency was like water. They refused a refund also but Ebay did find in my favour fortunately

Sorry to jump on the thread! I recently bought a mulberry Bayswater backpack and it smells strongly of weed. Is this normal? I’ve tried airing it out and it’s not making any difference.

Smell is usually a dead giveaway. DH bought me a fake bayswater a few years ago (to this day I have no idea why as it's not something I'd even expressed an interest in and I don't buy fakes) and it absolutely stank. A combination of a fishy plasticy smell. I'd suggest a weed smells is whatever chemical they have coated the materials in. Either way a bag that smells of anything other that leather will fall short of Mulberry standards.

Where was it purchased from?

Pocketfullofsunshine8995 · 06/08/2020 23:15

It was purchased online directly from their website.
It doesn’t have a plastic smell but really smells of weed. It’s so strong that I’m embarrassed to take it out to be honest!

bottlenose301 · 06/08/2020 23:30

I second the Purse forum, they are really helpful with things like this and authenticating items like this

Aquicknamechange2019 · 07/08/2020 05:58

@Pocketfullofsunshine8995 call customer services and speak to them about it.

It won’t be fake then but it does fall short of their standards. Speak to them and get them to exchange for a non smelly one. When you’re spending this much on a bag you absolutely should get something that’s perfect.
Meruem · 07/08/2020 09:57

This reminds me of when an ex of mine proudly presented me with a "Dior" leather jacket he'd got cheap off Ebay. I knew it wasn't genuine but I didn't want to hurt his feelings so wore it that night, by the end of the night most of the "leather" had flaked off! You have to be so careful with these sites. If you want genuine but can't afford it, you're better off waiting for the actual brands sales. You can get some bargains then and you know they're real.

HouchinBawbags · 07/08/2020 10:06

If I buy "designer" stuff off eBay I opt for the cheapos because either way, it's very likely you'll get a fake. I recently (start of July) bought Converse shoes from eBay. One full price for DD from what looked like a reputable outlet and one just over half the normal price from an account made up of random letters. Both pairs are now splitting at the back, the inner labels have crumbled and the bottoms have worn down massively. After just a month.

I'm not going to the trouble of messaging eBay or getting authentication or refunds.

The cheapo seller got a neutral feedback for the expected fakes, the expensive one got a full negative for tying to con folk.

Serialcatmum · 07/08/2020 17:56

I have been offered a partial refund of £10 as apparently I have damaged the purse and used it.

Ive sent pictures off to an authentication place and just waiting for them to get back to me. It cost £4:50 so I’ll jay see what they say.

If it is found inauthentic, you should get postage fees and authentication cost paid by the seller.

DysonFury · 07/08/2020 20:26

That is pure fake but the time to request a refund is on receipt of goods.

areyoubeingserviced · 07/08/2020 21:20

I don’t buy or sell designer items on eBay anymore. There are too many scammers.
Some years I sold a Louis Vuitton bag on eBay. I had barely used the bag and so it was in mint condition.
The seller complained that the bag was in terrible condition and raised a case against me asking for a refund. I asked seller to return the bag which she duly did. The bag that she returned was a old and battered. It wasn’t the bag that I had sent to her. She had kept my barely used bag and sent back a used replacement

Serialcatmum · 07/08/2020 22:31

@areyoubeingserviced 😱 what a terrible person!!!!

OP posts:
BuffaloMozzerella · 07/08/2020 23:31

@areyoubeingserviced were you able to prove she had sent a different bag back?

honeygirlz · 08/08/2020 10:12

@DysonFury

That is pure fake but the time to request a refund is on receipt of goods.

Two days is very reasonable for making a complaint. Most shops allow 28 days for refunds (of course longer for faults) and distance selling regulations allow 14 days.
