DH has set his heart on a day out at Sandbanks soon. We are 2 hours away. AIBU to think that parking in a public car park will be possible up to 10am or do we need to leave earlier?

It's the summer holidays, I'd get there earlier...especially if the weather is set to be good. We went to the lakes on sunday from Manchester, got there at 8.45 and the car parks were already full

UnfinishedSymphon · 05/08/2020 12:33

And it was raining all day!

HRHPP · 05/08/2020 12:35

Sandbanks car park was filling up at 6 am the other day . If you need to park there in good weather get here very early indeed.

Notverygrownup · 05/08/2020 12:36

Hmm. Suspected as much. Thank you

I live a few miles away and would never attempt to park at Sandbanks in August! You will definitely need to arrive early. Good luck!

Why Sandbanks in particular? Bournemouth and Poole have been manic on hot days recently (even made the BBC news) - gridlocked by 9am last week. And the route down through Winchester and the New Forest has been very slow.

The local council where also towing cars parked illegally at the weekend.

It’s very busy!

BKCRMP · 05/08/2020 12:54

On a hot day you need to be there by 8ish. BCP finally have towing powers. Alternative would be to park nearer the town centre and catch the open top bus up or to park much further away and walk up.

BKCRMP · 05/08/2020 12:55

I live a ten minute walk away. It's been bloody miserable recently on hot days!

Myyearmytime · 05/08/2020 12:56

Take the train to Bournemouth then the open top bus

Thank you. Sandbanks is a special spot for us so we were hoping to celebrate our anniversary there - but I think we will leave it for next year.

I was there last week. Got there at 10 and there was no chance of parking in the car parks. There was a huge queue. We finally parked in a local road in a parking bay.

BKCRMP · 05/08/2020 21:36

@Notverygrownup If you are ok walking around the circled area is loads of on the road parking that is unrestricted. My parents live within that area and even on the worst sandbanks days I can usually find parking spots near to theirs apart from between 12pm and 2pm. It's about a 35 minute walk but it's a very scenic walk which helps.
