To be shocked that the local high school has a YouTube channel showcasing school fights...

So school results came out today and unfortunately our local high school is bottom ten in the league tables. This is quite disappointing as it recently had a lot of money spent on it- fancy new building, gym, swimming pool, etc....

My friend suggested I search the school on YouTube as Nicola Strugeon was recently there awarding the school in something they did (can't remember- it was something to do with designing PPE). I wanted to see the report as thought it may show school in a more positive light.

I searched the school on YouTube and one of the first things that came up was a channel showcasing school fights of kids basically kicking the sh*t out of each other. I am genuinely shocked. Some of the videos are especially violent and take place right outside the school entrance. I showed DH and apparently this is normal nowadays. Am I just being naive?

I know fights happen in schools but right outside the school entrance? I feel sorry for all the kids that have to walk past that just to get into school.

Not normal but you can find anything online. Report it if it's that bad, I would if it was my kids' school (guessing you are in Scotland though?).

rach2713 · 05/08/2020 00:23

Yeah it's pretty much normal nowadays for everything to be on youtube I have a few ideas what school it may be as a few up by me are really bad for it I'm north east Scotland..

rockingaroundthemulberrybush · 05/08/2020 00:24

I'm guessing Ellon

2155User · 05/08/2020 00:25

Report.
Not normal.

And I hate to break it to you, but most schools I know with the best facilities that suddenly appear are actually the worst schools that the council throw a lot of money at to try and improve

mrsmrt1981 · 05/08/2020 00:39

@rockingaroundthemulberrybush No, it's Newbattle High in Midlothian

@2155User I really hope you are right in that it is not normal. I like to think we have higher standards for our schools than that.

@CoRhona I have reported it to YouTube. I am not sure about reporting it to the school as I do not have my child there yet so feel weird contacting them. And tbh, I am not sure I want to end my child there anymore. Some of the videos are at least a year old so I find it hard to believe that the school isn't aware but I could be wrong.

I was at high school 15 years ago, and I do remember fights and bullying taking place but never right outside the school entrance. I did have a mobile phone that took very poor quality videos but YouTube wasn't really a thing back then, and I don't think filming an incident would have even occurred to me. Maybe I am naive and out of touch.. DH seems to think so.

Are you certain you are looking at the School's official YouTube channel?

The one I'm looking at doesn't appear to host anything of that nature at all, and to be honest, I'd be flabbergasted at any School hosting things like that on any official channel.

If it's a channel belonging to a private individual, then I'm not sure what you can do beyond reporting anything against T.o.S to YouTube themselves and making the School aware.

Oh no, it's not the school's official channel. It looks like a channel made up by the kids. It just popped up when I was researching the school. There are two different channels both focused on fights at that school. Sorry I wasn't clear on that.
Gobbycop · 05/08/2020 03:36

@rach2713

Any chance you could narrow it down a bit please, location wise?

I'm also NE Scotland.

OhioOhioOhio · 05/08/2020 03:39

Omg that is awful

OhioOhioOhio · 05/08/2020 03:40

I've just googled it and loads popped up.

araiwa · 05/08/2020 03:49

I know the school here, taught many years ago in Midlothian. Some points from me
"fancy new building, gym, swimming pool" do not make a good school, A good school is good staff, good leadership, good parents, motivated pupils - if you don't have that then any school will "fail".

OhioOhioOhio · 05/08/2020 04:42

I'm horrified.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 05/08/2020 04:43

Id want it reported. Its awful that victims know its there. People will keep making them if theres an audeince too.

I really feel for the kids.

OhioOhioOhio · 05/08/2020 04:54

Yeah, imagine applying for a job in a few years and that being online with you in it? Omg.

JuniperFather · 05/08/2020 05:26

Schools are so much in denial about things like this it's unreal. I'd send a simple email to the head with a link to it, and ask them who is responsible for marketing/comms enquiries at the school. Whatever PR efforts that they're doing for the school, need pausing completely while they address this - one completely counters the other.

JuniperFather · 05/08/2020 05:27

@OhioOhioOhio

Yeah, imagine applying for a job in a few years and that being online with you in it? Omg.
Imagine the fact that very few people would be able to identify anyone in the videos, they're not "tagged", they will drop off the radar in terms of views once kids get bored...
OhioOhioOhio · 05/08/2020 07:52

Watch Connection on Netflix and see if you still think that.

JuniperFather · 05/08/2020 08:25

Seriously?

Pittapitta · 05/08/2020 08:31

The title is misleading the school haven’t put this up kids from the school have. That’s a big difference. Kids do all sorts of crazy things. Report it to the school and they will ask YouTube to remove it.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 05/08/2020 08:38

There was a single case of this locally a few years ago where a child was attacked and then the video passed round. I belive its a trend to film fights...

Thankfully the police were invilved, the school headteacher spoke out in the paper against it and it was taien v seriously.

The poor children attacked, not only to be jumped, but also to know others were watching it. It really can make life very very difficult. School phobia (understandably) and fear of people/crowds...

It really is quite serious.

WombatStewForTea · 05/08/2020 08:42

Fights happening - normal

Constant fighting- not normal

Fights happening on school property - normal but staff would generally see and intervene. Unless like when I was at school they deliberately find somewhere where staff couldn't see

Fights being filmed and put on YouTube/tiktok - very normal.

The school knowing it's there and not doing anything about it - not normal. But they may not know about it.

What in particular were you really concerned about the fighting happening?

I'd echo a pp. A good school is the ethos, staff and leadership

contrmary · 05/08/2020 08:44

I'm struggling to find any of the fight coverage. Maybe it's to do with the algorithms search engines use, they assume I won't be interested in watching kids kicking the shit out of one another.

backaftera2yearbreak · 05/08/2020 08:47

So excited my son will be attending this school in 2 years 🙈
