Hi everyone,

Sorry for a very boring AIBU but does anyone have any interesting facts they’d like to share? I need a good fact for a work meeting this morning - any ideas?

Thank you!

All horses have passports that go with them for life wherever they go.
(I say all as legally they all should in UK but not everyone does it & there are often dodgy dealers etc who fake passports to make horse look better than it is)

Another horse fact is that ...

Every thoroughbred racehorse in Northern hemisphere has the same birthday = 1st January.

and every thoroughbred racehorse born in Southern hemisphere all have the same birthday = 1st August

They are obvs not all born exactly on those dates but rather, no matter what date they are born that year, they are all given the same birthday in their passport to make entering them for races standardised.

Honeybee penis fact#2
The leftover penis tip in the queen bee glows ultraviolet and acts as a beacon to guide in other males to mate.

And this is why you see TB foals being born so early in the year (compared to the spring/early summer which is the natural foaling time for horses) - everyone wants to get a nice early foal so that it’s as physically mature as possible once they start racing, compared to another foal born a month or two later.

The covering season officially starts on 15 Feb (to allow an 11 month gestation) but some studs will cover a week or so earlier. The risk is that you get an early foal that ends up being born in late December and then becomes officially 1 year old a few days later, making it next to worthless as a northern hemisphere racing prospect. It doesn’t happen often, but it isn’t unheard of.

@cooliebrown

if you hold down the unlock doors button on your car key fob for 5 seconds it lowers all the electric windows in the car - ideal when approaching a scorching hot car....
Sorry... not on mine.

According to Charles Manson, the actor Peter Falk who played Columbo once propositioned him in a car park.

It's known of course that anaesthesis works, but they're still not sure how

... and that's really not terribly comforting!!

Female ferrets can die from a lack of sex

Male kangaroos have 2 penises. But female Kangaroos have 3 vaginas.

When lying you look to the left and when you tell the truth you look to the right because the left side of the brain deals with emotion and imagination and the right side deals with facts and logical thinking.

Another collective noun: an exaltation of larks

I find that utterly lovely, and so true - the skylark's song is one of the most joyous sounds I've ever heard.

CuntyMcBollocks · 04/08/2020 17:59

oranges were first called Noranges, but it has changed over time, so instead of saying 'a norange' we now say 'an orange.
The same goes for the words 'Uncle' and 'Apron'. People said it as 'a nuncle' and 'a napron' was called as such because it went around the nape of your neck.

CaveMum · 04/08/2020 18:12

@CuntyMcBollocks “nunky” is still used as an affectionate way of referring to an uncle in some parts of the UK. Anyone who listened to classic radio comedy The Navy Lark will recall CPO Pertwee referring to his Uncle Ebeneezer as “Nunky” when he was trying to scam him.

Disclaimer - I’m not old enough to have listened to TNL when it was originally broadcast!

Flakes do melt. Found that out last summer when I left on in the car accidentally. It was all over.

Umberling · 04/08/2020 18:30

@marchez have you tried dipping them in a hot chocolate? They definitely melt then!

@Zoomintheroom

The chlorine smell at swimming pools isn't actually chlorine. It's caused by trichloramine which is a chemical created when chlorine mixes with urine 🤢
This isn't true at all.

The chemicals in my hot tub smell of chlorine in the container before they go in.

The little flaps on the side of a cat's ears are called Henry's pockets. All cats have them but only some dogs. No idea who Henry was.
