lockdown for over 50's

As its been muted that over 50's may have to be in lockdown AIBU to think employers will be very reluctant to employ anyone in this age group

RaininSummer · 03/08/2020 18:06

I expect you are right. Its hard enough anyway.

Sirzy · 03/08/2020 18:06

It’s madness and a completely unworkable plan. How do they plan on doing this personalised risk assessment on everyone over 50 for a start?

DomDoesWotHeWants · 03/08/2020 18:07

May as well declare schools closed now, then.

GiddapGreyWaynesKeat · 03/08/2020 18:07

I won’t comply with any risk assessment process. Nobody is locking me up

Happygirl79 · 03/08/2020 18:08

This government don't have a clue

saraclara · 03/08/2020 18:08

It might have been mooted, but so have lots of things that won't happen.

The economy won't cope with every 50+ lesson not in work, so thinks would have to be desperate to do that. And if it's that desperate surely we'll all be in full lockdown.

doadeer · 03/08/2020 18:09

50 seems so young to do this!

My mum and step dad have busy jobs never in a million years would you think they are in a "vulnerable" group.

saraclara · 03/08/2020 18:09

Lesson=person

CherryPavlova · 03/08/2020 18:12

well that will be lots of consultants. GPs, teachers, headteachers, nurses, care staff and other key workers stuck at home - as with many of the current governments policies, I'm not sure its been terribly well thought through.

devildeepbluesea · 03/08/2020 18:13

Such a badly thought out idea. Basically all experienced people won't be able to work. Lunacy.

BreconBeBuggered · 03/08/2020 18:14

Nonsensical bloody notion. Might as well shut down the schools, universities and NHS now. Plus take a lot of carers for elderly parents out of the picture. It's as if they're trying to kill off education, health and the elderly...oh.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/08/2020 18:16

Exactly.

Much better to keep anything that involves large gatherings closed particularly schools, concerts, sporting events etc.

Thomasina79 · 03/08/2020 18:16

I’m just turned 65 and still working, albeit three days now. First they tell us we need to work longer as we are living longer, now they tell us we are vulnerable and should stay at home. Can we draw our pension during this time at home ? No I thought not!

Pogmella · 03/08/2020 18:16

That’ll be all of our SMT then. I wondered if it might ease career progression for women in their 30’s/40’s. Maybe employers would be more open to PT senior roles if there’s a group of experienced potential candidates who can be on site

CakeMiddleton · 03/08/2020 18:16

Isn't this just idle speculation by the media?

It's no wonder no one can keep up with the actual rules when there is so much fake news.

Topseyt · 03/08/2020 18:19

I am in my mid fifties.

During the spring lockdown I have been made redundant and came perilously close to losing both parents without ever seeing them again. I feel at the moment that I have no job prospects.

Whilst I do have type 2 diabetes, so I am at some increased risk, I have no intention of complying with the personalised risk assessments if that comes about. Some of us have just about had enough.

My parents are still very ill and vulnerable. Time is very short and precious. So for that reason I will not be observing another lockdown whatever I might be told.

I doubt that the government has really thought it through and I think the idea sounds unworkable.

IAintentDead · 03/08/2020 18:20

There will not be a full lockdown for the over 50s or even the over 60s.

It is possible but I think very unlikely, that they will do it for the over 70s or even over 66s (pension age). They won't do it for people of working age.

Even in the main lockdown there was no specific age. There were letters for those advised to shield but even that was advisory not law. I suspect they are working on an online tool where people can input their individual circumstances including age and any other conditions and they will be given a rating of either high, medium or low risk.

Redlocks28 · 03/08/2020 18:21

Moot, not mute.

It won’t happen, OP-don’t worry. It would wipe out half the workforce and schools would never open again.

Ponoka7 · 03/08/2020 18:23

@Sirzy, they'd do it via the GPs just like shielding. This will be individual and will support people who may be forced back into work. It isn't to keep people at home, but rather stop people being put into risky situations. A woman I know who works in Lidl has been forced back onto the shop floor, yet the same shop isn't enforcing mask wearing. Public transport isn't enforcing mask wearing, so just travelling to work brings risks.

Likewise people are starting to get called into DWP offices to sign on and for assessments, as well as having to attend job interviews, or be sanctioned. Those people will be travelling on public transport.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/08/2020 18:23

50 would be very young!

What about the government? They are mostly over 50!

Topseyt · 03/08/2020 18:24

Also, Boris Johnson is in his fifties. Could this mean he has to quarantine himself at home for the whole winter?

Actually, would that be such a bad idea - every cloud and all of that......

Ponoka7 · 03/08/2020 18:26

For those people who do want risk assessing and are shown to be at increased risk, once again Shopping hours and slots will be made available as well as community services. Or should we just leave people to take their chances?

dementedma · 03/08/2020 18:32

Its bollocks. The over 50s are the ones usually looking after the over 70s in families. They usually form.most of the senior management in businesses, built on years of experience. They are senior military officers, police, fire fighters. They are headmasters and head mistresses, surgeons, consultants, professors, heads of department...etc etc.
Many over 50s I know are running marathons, hill walking, wild swimming, rowing etc and are as fit as fleas. Just more Covid bollocks.

Freddofrogshop · 03/08/2020 18:37

How would that be paid for? If furlough is ending, how will I and many like me, support my 2 school aged kids and pay my mortgage?
50 isn't old.
Actually I'm 49 and dh is 50, so I'd have a few months to earn some cash, then what?, be forced into benefits when I'm perfectly capable of doing my job?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/08/2020 18:40

Short of welding the door shut I shall carry on with my life making my own risk assessment. I've just got a new job after being made redundant so Boris can go to fuck if he thinks I'm not going out should I be "at risk". I'd rather take my chances than lose my home.
