As its been muted that over 50's may have to be in lockdown AIBU to think employers will be very reluctant to employ anyone in this age group

@GiddapGreyWaynesKeat

I won’t comply with any risk assessment process. Nobody is locking me up
Shielding has always been advice, not law. Nobody is forced to stay at home.
labyrinthloafer · 03/08/2020 18:43

They are just making it up, tbh.

I have no idea wtf they are doing.

hullabaloo68 · 03/08/2020 18:45

I know its moot that'll teach me to check my message before posting

Aurorie11 · 03/08/2020 18:45

I'm 50, supporting my Dad in early 80s with health issues and young ish (tweens) children. Given wider family demographics and health issues we would all be shielding. So no I won't be

mellicauli · 03/08/2020 18:46

Over 50 and a high risk due to BAME background = a very large proportion of NHS staff. Not thinking this is really going to happen..

saraclara · 03/08/2020 18:48

They'll be 'considering' everything, to be fair. That's what they should be doing. 'What are our alternatives if...?' is exactly the question that govt and civil servants need to be asking.

Then they'll cross lots of those ideas off the list because they're impractical. Have some lined up as very possible, and others as maybes.

But the media get wind of all the brainstormed ideas and chuck them about, even if they were never seriously considered.

Littlemeadow123 · 03/08/2020 18:49

I presume Boris is making himself exempt from that rule. Hmm

The shop my mum works at will have to close at least temporarily if this is the case because all of the staff are over 50. My dad's company also has a lot of staff members over fifty. And these are just two examples.

hullabaloo68 · 03/08/2020 18:50

I don't think its going to happen but now the lovely media has put it out there I do wonder if it'll stop some employers, employing people in that age group. I'm over 50 myself and sole earner in my household.

Bearnecessity · 03/08/2020 18:52

Not a chance of anyone locking me down at 50... jog on...

Charleyhorses · 03/08/2020 18:55

I'm just going to assume that this media frothing.

Flowers009 · 03/08/2020 18:59

Over 50s are the most affected by covid, I agree with it.
Over 50 should be able to stay home and work,

Ultimatecougar · 03/08/2020 18:59

No it hasn't, OP. The suggestion is that over 50s have their risk assessed by an online tool. They can then use this information to decide what sort of action should be taken.

Many over 50s will be low risk. Those that are not will probably be because they are obese or have a medical condition. These people will then have the information they need to protect themselves, although this would be advice, not law. I would hope that some support could be offered to high risk over 50s - extended Furlough or exemptions from DWP sanctions for the unemployed, but given the track record of this government, im not holding my breath on this one.

iklboo · 03/08/2020 19:07

What next? Redheads who were born on a Tuesday when the wind blew widdershins?

Owners of tabby cats?

Daily Mail readers?

People who put milk in before the tea?

Really well thought through. Almost no chance of implementation.

SomewhereEast · 03/08/2020 19:23

Its some bollocks which has been leaked, almost certainly with an agenda & without much regard for accuracy, and then hyped up by the UK's weirdly hysterical media. Really not worth even thinking about.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/08/2020 19:26

It'll never happen. All the trained nurses and management in the facility I work at are over 50 some support staff too. Many have ongoing medical issues.
Too many of us are apparently too young and fit to retire, my age for retirement is now 67. But suudenly we are too old to work?? As we are at risk??

Freddofrogshop · 03/08/2020 19:42

@Flowers009

What if they have jobs that can't be done from home?
GiddapGreyWaynesKeat · 03/08/2020 19:46

Shielding has always been advice, not law. Nobody is forced to stay at home

My employer would force me to work from home if I were assessed as high risk.
I hate working from home, I’ve done it since lockdown for only one day a week, it’s lonely, isolating, boring. I go into work for the rest of the week, I’m out in the world and spending money too to keep the economy going.

BillywilliamV · 03/08/2020 19:52

Fuck off, I am 55 and as fit as a flea. No bugger is locking me up!

midgebabe · 03/08/2020 19:52

What I dislike about the plan is that it pretends that anyone who is vulnerable has a free choice, when the fact remains that if the virus level in society is high, their choices will be to take a huge risk or retreat into a hermitage.

The actions of everyone else will affect what the vulnerable can do, yet only the vulnerable are expected to take the pain, and the amount of pain they will have to take will be much higher than if we took other approaches, such as effective test and trace and supported self isolation for potential carriers.

It's akin to victim blaming. Don't wear a short skirt, don't walk alone at night, don't go outside. The problem is the rapist or the virus carrier, but they get off

allmycats · 03/08/2020 19:52

This is just media making fairy stories. Ignore them

Nanny0gg · 03/08/2020 19:53

But it's not actually happening, is it?

fiftiesmum · 03/08/2020 20:21

This is another distraction to give the mature plebs something to talk about while the government is bumbling incompetently towards disaster. Then when it is announced they are not locking up the over fifties then everyone concerned is over the moon and saying how wonderful Boris is.
And I shall be 49 for a few more years.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2020 20:34

@Flowers009

What about those who can't work from home? DH is a self employed handyman so he can't work from home. What's he supposed to do, lose his customers to someone younger?
MrsExpo · 03/08/2020 20:39

Ian honestly day that I’ve never typed these words on an Internet forum before .... but fuck that.

I’m 66 and in very good health. Noone is going to lock me up (unless I do actually murder DH , then fair enough I suppose ..... Smile)

ListeningQuietly · 03/08/2020 20:47

If they try to stop me going to the gym now that its open
