As its been muted that over 50's may have to be in lockdown AIBU to think employers will be very reluctant to employ anyone in this age group

No-ones putting me in the corner!
I work in an independent shop where the 3 staff are over 50 and the owners 60+, so what, we close?
I also work in a large B+B, 4 out of 5 of us are over 50
and a Collective gallery where out of 23 members, only 5 are under 50, do those close too?
Boris can't possibly do it, they'll be over 50s riots.

recklessruby · 03/08/2020 20:58

Well my school will be closed then.
Most of the cleaning/caretaking/lunch staff are 50 plus and I m a teacher and 52. Loads of teachers are 50 plus (it's a good school that staff tend to stay in).
Also i m actually fitter than I was in my 40s before I lost 4 stone.
I dont want to stay at home.

recklessruby · 03/08/2020 20:59

Boris is 55. He ll have to shield himselfGrin

labyrinthloafer · 03/08/2020 21:00

We can only hope Grin
pussycatinboots · 03/08/2020 21:01

I'm all for it as long as Boris sets the example and gets locked down or locked up

Bargebill19 · 03/08/2020 21:03

Given that a heck of a lot of key workers would fall into this category (from hgv delivery drivers to nhs and every other key need sector in between), this will be a step very quickly abandoned once the fat cats no longer have ‘whisky and salmon’ on tap.

saltycat · 03/08/2020 21:05

They just want those of us over 50 to either cocoon forever or just die now.

Johnson is a total hypocrite and a prat IMV. But I'd say Cummings is behind the latest effort to isolate this cohort. They can FK right off now. Johnson should be the first to isolate for good. Lead by example.

Sorry for the rant.

pussycatinboots · 03/08/2020 21:06

@MrsExpo

Ian honestly day that I’ve never typed these words on an Internet forum before .... but fuck that.

I’m 66 and in very good health. Noone is going to lock me up (unless I do actually murder DH , then fair enough I suppose ..... Smile)

I am shocked it has taken this long to post that comment 😁

if you do "do him in" make sure the patio is nice and neat and they'll never find him 😉

MilkRunningOutAgain · 03/08/2020 21:41

DH has been commuting into central London all through, helping to keep the firm he works at going. He’s 53. It’s a small firm and he is one of 5 or 6 senior employees that have been running the firm since March, all of them are over 50. The firm will fold if they can’t work, putting 50 people out of work. I’m now quite worried.

I’m 53 too and have 2 teenagers still at school. We’re rural - how will they get to school if I don’t drive them? No one else is close by to help out.

I will be able to continue working from home myself, but we would be impoverished. Probably it is a rubbish rumour, I hope so.

SummerPoppies · 03/08/2020 21:44

And just who is going to pay my bills if they lock me and my husband away??

CakeMiddleton · 03/08/2020 21:48

THEY ARE NOT PROPOSING LOCKING DOWN ALL PEOPLE OVER 50!!!!

Topseyt · 03/08/2020 21:54

@CakeMiddleton

THEY ARE NOT PROPOSING LOCKING DOWN ALL PEOPLE OVER 50!!!!
I'm certainly not saying that they are, but they seem to have toyed with the idea of these personalised risk assessments.

I'd be reluctant to participate if it might lead to me being told to isolate.

saraclara · 03/08/2020 22:50

@SomewhereEast

Its some bollocks which has been leaked, almost certainly with an agenda & without much regard for accuracy, and then hyped up by the UK's weirdly hysterical media. Really not worth even thinking about.
Yep.

It's getting everyone hysterical to no purpose. Thanks media. It's also not going to help the division between the generations that Covid has helped foment.

Port1aCastis · 03/08/2020 22:53

What is this shite covering up? Designed to cause outrage stir up the plebs and get the nation angry but wtf else is going on that has been buried?

Racoonworld · 03/08/2020 22:57

I don’t think they mean lock down all over 50s. The risk assessments would be to identify those at higher risk and those people would be asked to shield. Hopefully those who are identified will comply for there own safety!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 03/08/2020 22:59

SummerPoppies

And just who is going to pay my bills if they lock me and my husband away??

How do you think those shielding have managed for the last 4 months???

GiddapGreyWaynesKeat · 03/08/2020 23:01

Why should I comply? No government lackey is going to tell me what to do. I’m angry that this incompetent bunch of fools in government are even considering such a proposal.
AranciaRosso · 03/08/2020 23:12

Look below the surface here. There will be something else going on from which we need distracting.
This clusterfuck of a government is so dishonest and self serving and is being driven by a maniac (and I don’t mean Johnson here).
I would love to know what’s being covered up by the shitstorm this stupid suggestion has caused

Chaotic45 · 03/08/2020 23:13

For goodness sake, why is everyone taking this literally? This is a new virus, it has put the whole world into a new situation, with so many options and requiring both sensible and blue sky thinking to come up with the best plan of action.

This was part of a brainstorming exercise, the very nature of which involves all sorts of novel and crazy ideas. It doesn't mean that they are all going to make it to the list of ideas which could be implemented.

It is pointless getting hysterical about this!

Notfeelinggreattoday · 03/08/2020 23:23

As my mum said she cant have her pension now until 66 ( moved from 60 ) so has to work to pay the bill , so if they bring this in shes 61 she cant follow it as only her working as my dad just retired and got his pension at 66 but it doesn't cover their bills etc on its own

Notfeelinggreattoday · 03/08/2020 23:24

Also i think just media stirring yet again , they keep printing different things and confusing / worrying people even more about things that may not even happen

Doggybiccys · 03/08/2020 23:34

@CherryPavlova

well that will be lots of consultants. GPs, teachers, headteachers, nurses, care staff and other key workers stuck at home - as with many of the current governments policies, I'm not sure its been terribly well thought through.
@CherryPavlova - that was my first thought.

Re risk assessments - Scottish gov have just released a Covid risk assessment toolkit for returning to work. It works out your Covid age then puts you into categories and gives advice on what you should do / think about doing etc. It’s really easy to do and although I’ve got some health probs, I’m still able to go into work.

www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-on-individual-risk-assessment-for-the-workplace/

Will be interesting to see what BawJaws comes up with. How many of the cabinet will need to be locked down?

They now really do look like they are making it up as they are going along. It’s embarrassing and v worrying.

AnyFucker · 03/08/2020 23:38

Haha
Not happening

I am over 50 and have had Covid so mildly I didn't even realise

Serin · 03/08/2020 23:55

Oh Thank FF that.
I'm knackered, I've worked my socks off in the NHS. I've caught covid in the process and was back at work 2 weeks later despite still feeling shit, because I was ordered to.
I could do with a rest.
Hygge! Is that still a thing? I will spend the autumn doing that.

Riv12345 · 04/08/2020 00:08

Wasn't it over 50s with under laying health conditions
