AIBU to take my favourite mug on holiday?

My husband thinks I’m mad. We’re just packing for our Summer holiday to Norfolk, and I’m packing my favourite mug to take with me. The thing is, we all know tea tastes better out of a good mug. And mugs in rental holiday homes are always crap - generally those awful Ikea ones with tiny handles. So sod it, I’m going to take my mug with me. I’m only taking one, I’m not even bringing my afternoon mug (yes, I have different shaped mugs for different times of day, is that just me??)

I know it will increase my enjoyment of this holiday, and we need all the help we can get there as, whilst I love Norfolk, we were meant to be going to Canada 😔

Anyone else take other home comforts with them away on holiday??

Yes to mugs, we take the kettle too cos sometimes the ones in holiday places are full of limescale. I need a decent brew in the morning!

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 09:00

Ok, I’m slightly nervous to do this, as I know mug preference is very personal, so no judgement. Here’s my favourite (morning) mug.

Show us yer mugs!

I'm a Whittards mug fan as well ! Sadly they don't seem to make many these days.

Norfolk instead of Canada...going by car

Take your bloody bed if it helps you enjoy it!!

Norfolk is lovely, really lovely but it's not Canada 🇨🇦 & whatever you had planned there!

I have specific mugs for specific drinks - it's 'normal' and I won't hear otherwise.

However I'd be too worried my favourites would get broken and I'd worry too much about remembering them, so I have a camping/UK holiday lovely mug. I have been known to buy mugs/glasses etc when on holiday and I regularly buy knives (and bring them back). My knife collecting is from holiday locations. I love it!

That's a pretty sweet mug tbf

For me as long as they're white inside I like them. I like smaller cups (and a pot) generally instead of mugs but that's a nice one

laundryelf · 03/08/2020 09:04

I bought mine as slightly imperfect after visiting holiday home in Scotland that used them, gorgeous mugs and so lovely to hold. Tea tastes great and brings back happy memories of our holiday.

I could never go on holiday I couldn’t get my favourite chair in the car. I make a big fuss if anybody sits in MY chair or drinks from my mug. Am I turning back into being a toddler?

twilightcafe · 03/08/2020 09:06

Favourite mugs, pillows, knives, chopping board, spices...

I'm on a staycation, and the above have all come with me.

If only I could bring my bed with me...

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 03/08/2020 09:07

Beautiful mug, OP.

I have a collection of mugs now that I’ve bought on holiday, all bought to drink out of on the holiday but now they remind me of the places we’ve been, so that’s nice.

We always pack a cheese slicer and frequently forget to bring it home. I’ve stocked half the self catering cottages of Britain with cheese slicers ...

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 09:08

@laundryelf ooh that’s a lovely one. Well done for not just stealing a mug to take home with you 🤣

Obvs take the mug.
Note of caution though, I always take my favourite mug on holiday, wrapped in a tea towel to protect it. Last year I was unpacking and merrily tugged at the tea towel which unrolled in mid air and released my mug which promptly smashed. In the first 5 minutes of my holiday.
I cried.

PregnantAndTiredMum · 03/08/2020 09:09

If we're going down south we've been known to take a big bottle of scottish water. Obviously it doesn't last long but water in the south if England is so horrible. You can't have a decent cup of tea, can't drink it out of the tap, it doesn't even lather up in your hair properly with shampoo.
Love Norfolk though so we're willing to suffer the rubbish water Grin

llangollen11 · 03/08/2020 09:09

I'd take a mug just in case the ones in a self-catering place were the wrong size, but one I could be OK with getting broken if that happened.

ArthurMorgan · 03/08/2020 09:10

I take my mug if I stay at a family members too 😂

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 09:11

@TeacherKS1 noooooooooo I’m devastated for you!

Ok, these replies are making me think I should take favourite mug no. 4 or 5 incase disaster strikes. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much anxiety around breaking a mug before...

I think some people are amateurs who need to up their game 😉 DH and I have a matching set of Her Ladyship /Lordship mugs just for holidays. They are put through the dishwasher on return, then into sandwich bags, then replaced in the original box to protect in transit. I also have.... drumroll.... A special water heating thing I take abroad. I bought it from a car boot sale in Prestatyn years ago. Its like a kettle element, that you put into your water in the mug. It has its own travel case and everything. Too many hols without kettles abroad. I have no idea if you can even get such a thing now, but takes up less room than a kettle and presumably slightly lighter. We also take our own tea bags and have travelled with a metal without glass cafetiere.

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 09:12

@PregnantAndTiredMum yessssssss. Adding a bottle now. Our Scottish water tastes the best and Norfolk water tastes like shit. Sorry norfolkites, but it’s rank.

Where abouts in Norfolk are you going OP? That will definitely influence my decision on if you BU

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 09:15

@LockdownQ fair. To the broads. Pretty much guaranteed awful mugs, probably from Lathams

Ah, you need to pack a Brita water filter jug too!

Exploring · 03/08/2020 09:17

I second the vote for second best mug just in case. We went to a holiday flat in Suffolk that had over a dozen mugs I didn't like (and 19 chairs) so I scoured a car boot the next day and got a couple of decent size ones for their collection.

QuestionableMouse · 03/08/2020 09:18

I always take mine. Just wrap it up well so it doesn't get chipped.

MinnieJackson · 03/08/2020 09:19

I always take my mug too! It's just never the same! Also don't forget 30 pairs of pants are mandatory when going on holiday.

onedaysoonish · 03/08/2020 09:21

My grandmother used to travel with full crockery and cutlery. She was staying in hotels!

JoJothesquirrel · 03/08/2020 09:22

I’ve just packed my mug for a picnic today! And tried to act all casual by tossing in mixed cutlery so that I don’t seem overly fussy.
