AIBU to take my favourite mug on holiday?

My husband thinks I’m mad. We’re just packing for our Summer holiday to Norfolk, and I’m packing my favourite mug to take with me. The thing is, we all know tea tastes better out of a good mug. And mugs in rental holiday homes are always crap - generally those awful Ikea ones with tiny handles. So sod it, I’m going to take my mug with me. I’m only taking one, I’m not even bringing my afternoon mug (yes, I have different shaped mugs for different times of day, is that just me??)

I know it will increase my enjoyment of this holiday, and we need all the help we can get there as, whilst I love Norfolk, we were meant to be going to Canada 😔

Anyone else take other home comforts with them away on holiday??

*I'd ffs

dottiedodah · 03/08/2020 08:43

I have 2 or 3 mugs and use them at different times of day too! We are at home for the Summer(luckily live on South Coast) and were also due a trip to North America! Take your fave mug and enjoy!

AntiHop · 03/08/2020 08:43

On my last holiday, I ended up buying a cup due to the ridiculously small cups in the airbnb.

senua · 03/08/2020 08:44

YABU! Don't take your favourite mug - it might get broken or left behind or some other calamity might befall it. Take your second best mug.

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 08:45

@Aroundtheworldin80moves that’s shit. One place we went to in Italy didn’t even have a kettle so we have to boil a pan of water every time we wanted tea. I realise I have been playing at level 1 of taking home comforts abroad, I need to up my game and pack a kettle next time!

I'm feeling anxious that you might leave it behind when you go home 😱

I went for a cheeky couple of nights to Lanzarote and only had one of those teeny suitcases, so couldn’t take a mug.
Missed my mug of tea so much that I went to the Spar and bought one !!!
I also always take tea bags and Nescafé mochas.
I’ve also spoken to a couple of people abroad who take their own little tea pot as you can’t always get one in a hotel !

TheChiefJo · 03/08/2020 08:48

Take the mug!

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 08:49

@ThrawnCow I am too tbh, I’ve set a reminder on my phone though so hopefully it’s going to be ok 🤞🏻

Having endured some horrid tea because of horrid mugs on holiday over the years, I'm with you. I've never taken my own but I have been known to buy one when I'm there.

101namesforme · 03/08/2020 08:50
@thistimelastweek tbh the mug is still a little pissed it’s not going to Canada, but will get over it by 2025 probably
I love particular mugs but would never take them on holiday, what if it breaks???? Shock

I have an amazing mug I bought from Whittards for work about 15 years ago. It is precious and perfect but not replaceable. I have never yet been able to find the right shape again. I have found good substitutes but not quite up there mugs. Somehow I still have to look in every Whittards I see to see if they have a similar one despite that not having been the case for over ten years 🙄.

It is too precious to travel.

Hoppinggreen · 03/08/2020 08:50

Kitchen roll, I always take kitchen roll if holidaying in the uk.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 03/08/2020 08:50

Have a listen to the Victoria Coren Mitchell episode of the Off Menu podcast. Her description of what she and David Mitchell take on holiday with them (and what they do when they get there) is honestly one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.

RiftGibbon · 03/08/2020 08:51

I take my pillow, and if we're not going to a particular holiday let, I take a decent kitchen knife as most places only seen to have blunt ones.
Always take herbs and seasonings too (self catering) and spare tea.

Niceandeasy · 03/08/2020 08:53

@101namesforme omg my favourite mug is from whittards too and this is exactly me!!! I have never been able to find a similar one that’s good enough. I periodically check their website but no joy. It’s a bit like the Emma bridge water ones but they’re ridiculously expensive. It’s got a blue swirly pattern on it - are we mug twins?!?

This is a revelation! I will be taking my mug to the Highlands in October - she deserves a holiday for her faithful years of service. Thank you OP, though I'm ashsmed I've never thought to do this.

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/08/2020 08:54

I take my coffee machine with me when we’re self catering in the UK. I’ve never regretted it.

MurderousChicken · 03/08/2020 08:54

We were away last week, I wish I'd packed my mug. I did solve the teeny cup problem though, I took to making my tea in the jug provided (with milk) and then just used that to top up the teeny cup until I'd had a proper mugs' worth of tea.
We have a variety of massive mugs at home that were bought on various trips to holiday homes.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2020 08:55

I take my own pillow now. Otherwise there is very little chance of me getting any sleep.

ThickFast · 03/08/2020 08:55

Can you post a photo??

user1493413286 · 03/08/2020 08:55

I’ve never done that but I think I will now as you’re definitely right that tea tastes better in certain mugs and the ones on holiday are always tiny. I used to take my pillow but it was either take the kids or take my pillow - difficult choice

StCharlotte · 03/08/2020 08:57

DH brought me 4 of them lined up like shots

Top man!
