To ask how do you know which things are 'tacky/common'?

On here I sometimes see certain items, behaviours, homeware, fashion, makeup, etc classed as "tacky" or "common". Sometimes I can understand it, but other times it is things that seem pretty innocuous. Despite this you see this kind of unanimous belief that those things are "common". However I can't really find an underlying pattern to what is deemed to be tacky/common and what is not. Is there any kind of theme or pattern to this? One example is I remember reading a thread where a pretty popular brand of scented candles were classed as tacky.

I also want to say that I am not trying to portray other users negatively as judgemental or anything, we are all entitled to our opinions. I am just interested from a broader point of view - how do certain things become tacky or common?

The tattoo thing is so true. They will never leave the tacky league, no matter how hard people try. In fact they have been made even tackier by the whole getting your kids name tattood on your neck or the butterfly on the ankle.

Bollox - my Zuni bear wrist tatt is nowhere near common - neither is my upperish middle-class background 🤷‍♀️

@PhilSwagielka exactly, something very footballers wives about the grey houses with diamanté and mirrored furniture and crushed grey velvet everywhere . I suppose it's because they think it looks 'expensive' when in reality it looks very identikit primark to me and not very original at all.
The fake Chanel signs everywhere are another one. literally 2 big sparkly C's on the wall or as an ornament. SO weird. would they have a big fake Nike tick painted on the wall, for example?

Alabamawhirly1 · 09/08/2020 15:08

Tattoos don't have to be tacky or common, but they'll never be classy.

I'm not tattoo bashing, I have some. But I'm under no illusion that for many people they will read you a certain way for having them. Many are just fashion statements now and have no real bearing on class.

PhilSwagielka · 09/08/2020 18:23

@MrDarcysMa I like houses that actually look lived in. My ex-stepdad's sister's house was so immaculate that when I stayed there, I was terrified of making a mess. It wasn't comfortable at all. I'd say my parents have good taste but their house is warm and welcoming and I'm not on shpilkes worrying about getting things dirty or whatever.

I got 3 on PoppySeed's list. Guess I'm OK then.

Ocado (see my threads!)
Netflix
Drinking coffee in mug in garden.

(I have however dabbled with a vegan diet, and no longer have a credit card, only a debit card, which has no fee).

@Redhair23. What is a black Amex? What’s the advantage of having one?

NetballHoop · 09/08/2020 20:19

@PoppySeedSaid. All that typing and you could have summed it up by saying that if one is the kind of person who 'bought all their own furniture' they simply must be common as Alan Clark put it.

MoreListeningLessChatting · 10/08/2020 11:23

We all have different ideas of tacky and common.

For me tattoos - just yuck

MoreListeningLessChatting · 10/08/2020 11:26

@Germolenequeen

I am assuming you are joking, if so nice one. Pininterest boards have a range of Zuni bear tattoos for wrist or anywhere else on the bod you so desire.

minnieok · 10/08/2020 12:15

Does it matter if you are happy??? Despite being very much from the privileged end of the spectrum, certainly not new money, dp covets a hot tub, I like them too so what the heck, tacky who cares! I also would love hair extensions because my hair is so thin post menopause.

Shalaalaa · 10/08/2020 12:38

Isn't it funny how "Keeping up with the Jones" is seen as tacky and common - but avoiding things you love because they may be perceived as tacky and common, is quite a contrived way to live, a bit miserable really.

Bluesheep8 · 10/08/2020 13:07

I heard someone call tattooes Tramp Stamps once. Not saying I agree...

I detest people who use language like that.
Zhampagne · 10/08/2020 13:23

Not condoning the use of the term but ‘tramp stamp’ refers specifically to a lower back tattoo.

So do I. It was an overheard conversation. I didn't know that about the lower back. I'm guessing the person I overheard didn't either as she was talking about a tattoo elsewhere on someone's body.

That's a pretty common saying isn't it, I thought that was a widely used term for those type of tattooes, not really synonymous with classy
jessstan2 · 10/08/2020 14:53

There's nothing 'classy' about tattoos.

Yesyoudoknowme · 10/08/2020 14:57

Anything that my ex MIL had. You know, naff lamps, revolting nick nacks, well basically if she had it it was tacky/common. I struggle a bit now I no longer see her but I am now of an age where I couldn't give a stuff what others think, if I like it I'll have it!

And does that apply to men?
SerenDippitty · 10/08/2020 17:03

@Notverybright

Making love to your cousin

Don’t let the royal family know how common you think they are, they’ve bumped people off before you know

Well quite - aristos marry their cousins don't they?
Bluesheep8 · 10/08/2020 18:16

And does that apply to men?

I have no idea. I heard a woman say it about another woman.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 10/08/2020 19:06

Are tattoos tacky and common or the people who have them as well?

Germolenequeen · 10/08/2020 21:24

@MoreListeningLessChatting

Why on earth do you assume I'm joking?

The Zuni bear is a symbol of strength - I got it on my wrist after going through a particularly hard time in my life
