To ask how do you know which things are 'tacky/common'?

On here I sometimes see certain items, behaviours, homeware, fashion, makeup, etc classed as "tacky" or "common". Sometimes I can understand it, but other times it is things that seem pretty innocuous. Despite this you see this kind of unanimous belief that those things are "common". However I can't really find an underlying pattern to what is deemed to be tacky/common and what is not. Is there any kind of theme or pattern to this? One example is I remember reading a thread where a pretty popular brand of scented candles were classed as tacky.

I also want to say that I am not trying to portray other users negatively as judgemental or anything, we are all entitled to our opinions. I am just interested from a broader point of view - how do certain things become tacky or common?

Years ago black tights and white shoes were considered tacky. Now for me it's oversized Chanel earrings and extra long nails. Some things considered 'classy' are just awful. Classic Louis Vitton bags are meh.
I love Yankee candles tho, maybe I'm a closet tacky.

I'd rather my kids have a teacher who likes 'tacky' things that one like @mrsBtheparker.

Although she did say ages ago so hopefully she's not in charge of educating kids anymore.

What is a Yankee candle?

What is a Yankee candle?
A brand of strongly scented candles in glass jars sold in Clinton’s

I don't get the hatred of Yankee candles. I've only ever heard it on Mumsnet. I know quite a lot of non tacky people.

Also, what's the house being matchy thing. Is it when people have every room the same colour? I don't by the way

Some people I know look down on things as tacky when really they can't afford them.
I just wish people would be original and genuine. It's so boring otherwise.

HeronLanyon · 03/08/2020 16:17

avery someone calling something tacky because they can’t afford it (even when they don’t think it is tacky at all?). This is getting complex.

Immigrantsong · 03/08/2020 16:18

Sometimes what we perceive as tacky or common is culturally ingrained in us.

A bit like the local garage around the corner then, but without the granny porn or cheap aviator sunglasses.

I assumed you were in the UK. Apologies if not.

@MrsMayo it's when all the decor matches and it's built around a certain colour.

For example did you know you can buy children's ball pits in silver ,white and grey or grey and pink to artfully match everything else in your livingroom?Grin

Isn’t that just called interior design 😆

Sweet Jesus! I've heard of white Christmas trees with the baubles colour coordinated with the knickknacks on your mantle piece, but kids toys are on a whole new level...

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 03/08/2020 16:24

Well I think there is such a thing as too matchy, but what do I know?

Are fake Christmas trees tacky or common?

MrsMayo · 03/08/2020 16:30

I'm off to Google peoples living rooms.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 16:30

Well, colours other than green ate beyond the pale.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/08/2020 16:30

Christmas trees, I mean.

Can't even remember how I stumbled upon these, but I was definitely impressed at the effort.

When DD was little the only colour coordination I thought of was whether the crumbs matched the floor enough to skip one round of hoovering.Grin

That's like a photographic negative.
