AIBU to let them camp on an island overnight?

(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

Not forgetting the Adventures across the frozen lake in winter.

Those adventures came far closer to disaster than mere camping on an island! Fell fires, accidental trips to sea and rising tides also pretty risky. Frankly the first book was a pretty tame easing into adventure...

Personally I think that people who start these sorts of threads are plonkers.

😂

PablosHoney · 02/08/2020 19:56

I said I don’t agree with it.

Re read my post as if I were Arthur himself

JasperRising · 02/08/2020 19:57

Nobody seems to have made reference to Picts and Martyrs. That one seems to get forgotten but I quite liked it. I'm now musing over what order I would rank them in...

@PablosHoney

I said I don’t agree with it.
But you can't find any quote to back up your opinion.

All you need to do is do 'Show all OP's posts'.

Having - really enjoyed - reading the book to our Roger aged kid recently.... NO. Because (1) Peter is not as sensible as he thinks (don't sail upriver as night falls!) and (2) the most unrealistic thing about the books is that they boss Roger around constantly and he never complains: any real life kid would have mutinyed by chapter 2.

PablosHoney · 02/08/2020 20:00

What are you talking about?? What am I supposed to find quotes for?? I don’t think you’ve said anything unkind and that’s what I’ve said

PablosHoney · 02/08/2020 20:01

What opinion am I meant to back up?

Gromit78 · 02/08/2020 20:01

Sounds like Swallows and Amazon adventure to me, but with mobile phones.

You don't say

I don’t want to get embroiled again but I don’t agree that the OP themselves said anything unkind or tried to insinuate anyone was stupid

Sorry - too many negatives in there for me to unpick.

Thanks for saying that.,

Yeah 🙄

PablosHoney · 02/08/2020 20:04

Im that thick that it’s even my fault that you can’t read a post properly 😂

CherryPavlova · 02/08/2020 20:07

If on Derwentwater, they’re owned by NT and camping or lighting fires is not permitted.

Gromit78 · 02/08/2020 20:07

I would take their maturity levels into account before making the decision. Is the 14 year old mature enough to take care of themsef and their sibling? Do they have all the skills set to do this? Could you stay with them to help or supervise them putting up the tent and cooking tea? If you are satisfied go back to shore. They can always phone you in an emergency

I can't work out if this is serious now or a sort of double bluff.
chomalungma · 02/08/2020 20:10

That might be difficult.

Picts and Martyrs is my favourite

I have a shameful secret to confess - as an adult reading the books I find myself attracted to Captain Flint

Pretty sure it's Windermere. The nearest town for supplies is known as Rio but I believe was based on Bowness....
DotForShort · 02/08/2020 20:12

ugh Patrick. I so love AF and the whole Marlow clan, but Patrick is the type who nowadays would be dressing in black and thinking deep thoughts. So wrong for Nicola.

@BellsaRinging, exactly! I know we're meant to like Patrick, but I could never understand Nicola's hero worship of him (or of Giles either, for that matter). Nicola deserves someone much better.

DappledThings · 02/08/2020 20:13

That might be difficult.

I think your knowledge of Morse code is as good as theirs though so they can signal with a torch.

This is difficult in some parts of the Lake District in 2020.
