(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

Nope.

If it was a couple of older teenagers (16+) yes but a 14yr and 6yr?

No bloody way.

LovelyIssues · 02/08/2020 19:14

I really hope this is a joke Shock surely you wouldn't even consider a teenager looking after a 6 yr old camping and cooking for them Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2020 19:17

The youngest is 7. (Well, actually I think he's about 98 by now.)

missclimpson · 02/08/2020 19:17

I really fancy some buttered eggs, but have forgotten the matches.

It's ok. DD (11) is going to do all the cooking. She likes to do that kind of stuff,.

Well that's just DofE type of thing, wouldn't really be worth a thread.
LovelyIssues · 02/08/2020 19:21

@chomalungma phew that's ok then

DotForShort · 02/08/2020 19:21

surely Roger should be with Nicola?

I don't know if Roger is right for her, but as long as Nicola doesn't end up with Patrick I don't much mind.

Another Antonia Forest fan here. She was such a brilliant writer.

The real Roger died in 1987.

@DotForShort ugh Patrick. I so love AF and the whole Marlow clan, but Patrick is the type who nowadays would be dressing in black and thinking deep thoughts. So wrong for Nicola.
Did any AF fans read Alex by Tessa Duder? I loved that book so much. My ds refuse to read either AF or Alex because of too many girls. Hmm

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

There’s also mobile.twitter.com/ClassicChBkClub this account on Twitter. It’s taking a break this month. Next month’s book is the Phantom Tollbooth. Last month’s pick of the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin is well worth a read though.

YY to Joan Aiken as well.

Thanks Rafal for the link, although I love classic children's books I didn't like Phantom Tollbooth as a child.

Am now inspired to read the rest of the AR series now. Only read S&A as a child. Read We didn't mean to go to sea as an adult. I got it for DS when he was going for a weekend to learn to sail a yacht from Ipswich to Harwich/Felixstowe and back. A couple of years later he took part in the tall ships race including sailing back from the Netherlands, so maybe he was influenced!

GreatAuntMaria · 02/08/2020 19:44

How old are you now?

Let me see - I think I must be about 160! Grin

When I was a small child, crinolines were worn. Shorts are not at all suitable for young ladies!

Scottsy100 · 02/08/2020 19:44

Not without an adult no way

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 02/08/2020 19:44

Yes.. except for the six year old who can't swim.

I am a firm believer in parenting by benign neglect...

chomalungma · 02/08/2020 19:46

I reckon we could get to 1000 posts with this...

@chomalungme What could go wrong?
It's not like there are pirates around.
Or robber...

There's a very long list and probably nothing will go wrong however I just wouldn't go there. I think if your 6 year old panics that's when things could start to go wrong - bad decisions/ideas etc

I recently had a conversation with my mum about my childhood and a lot of the decisions I made and things I did innocently as a kid was news to her. One example is she didn't realised that I used to swim in a massive river by myself under the age of 10.

DappledThings · 02/08/2020 19:49

🤣🤣🤣

Spoiler alert - they all survive fine despite high japed including foiling a burglary and go on to make further camps on this island and up in the hills where the mines are. Not forgetting the Adventures across the frozen lake in winter.
IslandbreezeNZ · 02/08/2020 19:53

Oh sh*t took me a while to realise this is a joke Confused

He's 7.Not 6. And he's very sensible.

I don’t want to get embroiled again but I don’t agree that the OP themselves said anything unkind or tried to insinuate anyone was stupid.

Ha ha yes got it - it's a joke

Well - maybe you should find a quote then to back up your opinion.
