AIBU to let them camp on an island overnight?

(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

Yes, I definitely would. If they’re incompetent enough to get themselves drowned, you’re probably better off without them anyway.

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 18:07

It might end up more Lord of the flies

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:07

Have you seen a pirate hanging around on a houseboat?

Nottherealslimshady · 01/08/2020 18:08

With an adult, yes. Two 14 year olds, yes. A 6 year old with a 14 year old, no.

OutOfHours · 01/08/2020 18:08

Absolutely no way!!

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 18:08

Send your husband a telegram

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:09

@DappledThings loved that

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/08/2020 18:09

Better drowned than duffers. If not duffers won’t drown.

Don’t let them go to sea though.

OutOfHours · 01/08/2020 18:09

😂 Missed the boat with that one

You can spot the people who have read a certain set of books!

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 18:10

They're quite responsible,.

Definitely not the kind of kids to go off sailing at night and leave their sister all alone on an island.

Seriously 6 is too young.
The island is surely owned by someone ?

Prettybluepigeons · 01/08/2020 18:11

Let them do it's as long as your husband approves of course!
They'll have great fun I am sure and make friends with the locals.

AlCalavicci · 01/08/2020 18:12

makes note to self , must read S&A again

fuckinghellapeacock · 01/08/2020 18:12

And yes, people own the islands and don't take kindly to people stopping on them let alone shitting in them and leaving litter, which your cherubs would do.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:13

I always wondered what they did about going to the loo!

HeronLanyon · 01/08/2020 18:13

Is it uninhabited ? Does it have a lookout hill from which they could fly a Morse code flag ? Is there buried treasure. Is there a big x anywhere or a footprint in the sand ?

Have they enough supplies of pemmican and molasses?
elephantoverthehill · 01/08/2020 18:14

May be they fancy a bbq? I hear there are some charcoal burners about in the region.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:15

Would they also plan a trip to the North Pole later on in the Winter (my favourite book of the set)?

Ellisandra · 01/08/2020 18:15
JanewaysBun · 01/08/2020 18:15

Totally fine, if they happen to foil any smuggling plots and happen upon a stash of gold ingots it will give them the best memories!

elephantoverthehill · 01/08/2020 18:16

The Norfolk Broads might be quite nice next year.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:17

Would you be happy with a parrot and monkey for new pets?

FelicityPike · 01/08/2020 18:20

Book them and two cousins gypsy caravans and say toodle-pip for the summer.
