To be appalled by Ocado delivery charge

£6.99 ! regardless of when you order. Just tried to book an order for a month's time.

You used to be able to sometimes get a £0 charge if you didn't mind having an unpopular slot. Even during lockdown.

I've been a customer for almost 20 years - time to move elsewhere. Maybe Waitrose? What are they like?

I imagine they are trying to entice people to sign up to an Ocado Pass which is something like 7.99 a month. Fine if you want to use them every week.

Sirzy · 01/08/2020 09:00

But even at unpopular times they still need someone to pick, pack and deliver the order which doesn’t happen for free.

I would much rather have a flat charge and know what to expect than have it variable depending when I could manage to fit it in

Jarli · 01/08/2020 09:01

Morrisons? They are delivering for as low as 1.50 or 2.00.

I've been super impressed with their range of products and the delivery too.

Jarli · 01/08/2020 09:01

Plus we've cut our food bill by around 80 pounds.

vanillandhoney · 01/08/2020 09:03

That's very expensive.

We use Morrison's and often get slots for £2. Not too antisocial either - normally 5-6pm.

Lockheart · 01/08/2020 09:03

Appalled? Really?

£7 for someone to do your shopping for you and then drive it to your house?

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Laaalaaaa · 01/08/2020 09:04

Appalled - Christ you’re not being held at gunpoint to use them are you? Don’t like the charge, don’t use them - it’s really not that difficult.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/08/2020 09:05

I had mine delivered for £0 this week so they do still offer them. I guess it depends on area.

jessstan2 · 01/08/2020 09:08

I never pay delivery charge. You have to order over a certain £, I can't remember what, maybe £40; perhaps you didn't which is why you were charged. Aren't the charges different prices throughout the day with some always free?

You can always purchase a smart pass which is very cheap and ensures free delivery at all times. That's what we did because of using Ocado nearly all the time.

I've used other companies occasionally and once or twice paid a delivery charge but never more than £3.99.

CeibaTree · 01/08/2020 09:09

Just buy a delivery pass then - a mid week one only costs £2.99 per month, so if you only use it once a month or every other month you'll be saving money rather than paying for each delivery. But if as you say you have been a customer for 20 years then I assume you use their service more regularly so a delivery pass is a no brainier really.

CeibaTree · 01/08/2020 09:09

*brainer

LittleBearPad · 01/08/2020 09:10

I pay £70 or so a year and have unlimited free deliveries, except at Christmas. If you’re going to use them regularly then get a pass

tara66 · 01/08/2020 09:11

Iceland do not charge at all for deliveries over £30 - you can get all the basics from them and next day delivery.

TheRealHousewife · 01/08/2020 09:14

@UntamedWisteria Waitrose has increased their delivery areas since Ocado binned them off in favour of M&S.

Waitrose are ok. No delivery charge over a certain spend.

Khadernawazkhan · 01/08/2020 09:14

Stop moaning. Either accept the charge or go else where without making a fuss.

immagicx · 01/08/2020 09:16

Waitrose is free delivery over £60. Lots of slots available again now where I am.

StonedRoses · 01/08/2020 09:16

Appalled that you have to pay for a service?
For £0 you can drive to a local supermarket and pick the items yourself. If you cant to do that you could even ask someone else to do so. Obviously it would be fair to get them some flowers or a bottle as a thank you!

starlingsintheslipstream · 01/08/2020 09:19

It costs something like £10 to pick and pack and deliver a grocery shop. I reckon the supermarkets must rue the day they started offering free/cheap slots. Having said that, my orders are now usually in excess of £200 as I'm doing a "big shop" for myself and my parents so I'm sure there's plenty of profit in it. I've got a Morrisons delivery pass and have been really happy with availability of slots and general quality of products.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 09:20

£7 for someone to do your shopping for you and then drive it to your house?

So by that logic when I've had a free slot the picker & driver haven't been paid anything? 🤔

StormzyInaDCup · 01/08/2020 09:21

@UntamedWisteria £6.99 is a lot to charge as a flat rate, given the price of competitors. I agree. They lost custom with the way they behaved during lockdown and will no doubt lose more now!

I switched to Asda, it's basic, but it does the job.

Summer41 · 01/08/2020 09:23

Tesco are changing their delivery charge too, it's going to be £4.50 per delivery from August regardless of which slot you pick. A good deal for those who usually choose the £7.00 peak slot, not so good for those the choose the £2.00 off peak delivery.

Shallowsubmarine · 01/08/2020 09:23

Ocado have tightened up their passes. They no longer do mid-week ones and their monthly one is now £9.99 no exceptions. I’ve been with them for years and years and when I tried to get it down a bit they just cancelled me

Lockheart · 01/08/2020 09:24

No @toohotz, it means you've had a service for free and the business had made a loss.

We're so used to having things for cheap or for free nowadays. Even £7 is too little - the company will be making a loss on that too.

Teacher12345 · 01/08/2020 09:30

My shopping for next week is being delivered for £3.99 and last week was £0 because we stayed up until 11.

toohotz · 01/08/2020 09:35

@Lockheart my point wasn't the business model. The delivery drivers are paid a set wage regardless of what the delivery costs me or my neighbour.

What's really going to be worrying supermarkets is the recent move by Amazon.
